Presidents Message So has anyone else noticed that summer

is almost over? Hopefully everyone has had an enjoyable summer and accomplished what you wanted to.

As you all remember September brings back the monthly General Meetings and the annual Picnic on Sunday, September 14 and more importantly the Shop Clean-up on Saturday 13, the day before the picnic. Hope to see lots of people both days, one can always greet old friends or make new ones. Everyone should also start thinking about volunteering to the nominating committee to serve on the Board of Directors for 1998 or volunteering to those that do serve. Without everyone's particlp'ation the society will not remain strong and ow oh pain ................................ writers cramp.

Ron Hasemeyer, Presi t

Club Picnic Come one come all to our Sunday,

September 14 Club Picnic to be held at the shop between 10 am & 4 pm. The Club will provide hot dogs and drinks. We ask our Club members with last names from A thru M to bring their favorite picnic side dish. Members with last names N thru Z, please bring desert dishes. Lunch will be served at noon. A good time to be had by one and all. Bring a friend and make new friends!! See you there. Rough rock may be available at picnic for buying, come and see!!! H.E. Neilson, Host

Shop Clean-up On Saturday, September 13 starting at 10 am, at shop, we need all hands on deck, to do our big clean-up. By the end of summer things are always a bit dirty and in need of some T.L.e. Mark the day on your calendar now and lets all be good sports and pltch in to make our shop a place we can be proud of. Lunch will be provided by the Club for those that help out.

PLEAS E,PlEASE,PlEA SE. ••• andTHANK YOU

Our shop is becoming a dumping ground. Please, if you have something you would

like to donate to the shop, check with the shop foreman, Tom Miller or Bill Collins.

Please, when leaving articles or catalog~ at the shop label them and say whethel you want them back, otherwise they will be thrown out after a reasonable time.

Please, bring only cotton or at least a SO percen t cotton blend for cleaning rags. Silks, wools and synthetics only spread the dirt around.

Thank you to the many generous n1embers who have donated goods to the club. All that is asked is that you check to see if the items are needed. Needs change and there just isn't room to store something that may be useful sometime in the fu ture. If you can't figure out what to do with it, chances are no one else will be able to either. Jamie McDonald, Friday Shop Supervisor ( day)

COUNTY FRIR TI IE

I would like to thank the following people who so generously shared the frui ts of their talents for the County Fair; V r11 McCullough, Fern Brown, Naomi Morgan, Ednah An tunovich, Emma and Carlos Castillo, Arland Stokes, H. E. Neilson and Joe Hammond. Their contributions made it possible for our Society to take another blue ribbon. Much as I appreciate these members, and I do appreciate them, it would be nice to have other members willing to show off what they have done.

I didn' t get out to the Fair so 1 don' t know who entered cases or what the results were but knowing our Society, I know we did well. I did see Ednah Antunovich, Lenore Brest, Joan Warren, Vern Me ullough and the Buschkes represented.

It is exciting to enter a case to S .C 'lOW

other people perceive your work. The rulcs_ at the Fair are not quite as strict <. s ,Federation Show. So find out wh,\l it wJ cs to enter next year!!! Jamie McDonald

September 1997 The PETROG RRPH

) ~ . IT'S SHOW TIME A~ The show committee had their first get

together and we are on our way. I want to thank all those who volunteered (or was railroaded) to help out this year. We have a great bunch of people working for us and with us.

One of the big concerns this year is advertising. You may have notices the absence of signs on city streets this year. The cities have all banned such signs. This makes a big difference in our attendance. So I will be calling for you to put signs in your yards. We can do this legally and it will help to get the word out about OUR show. We will also be using signs on pick-up tail gates. Arland will be making these for us. The vinyl was donated by Silva's Upholstery. We also will be printing us some bumper stickers for members to put on their vehicles. We will have boxes for fliers to go on store counters also. These boxes and signs will be available for those who will help.

Laurie Denton has sent notices to many magazines for ad for the show. She will be talking to the papers and any other place she can get into. Don't be bashful. If you think you have a good idea, come see me or anyone on the show committee.

One of these days you will be getting a call from Joan Warren to help out in some capacity. Or if you have a place you would like to work, give her a call. Anyone who refuses her will receive an all expense paid trip to the Gallows, HA.

As with every year, we want this to be the best. So lets all chip in and make it that way. Our show is for everyone so come join in and help 'us out.

~ I:;;:ill Collins, 1998 Show Chairman

It is time to get serious about making

something for our Show Auction. We all benefit from all the extra goodies provided by the money we raise at the auction. The shop fund finances our open house, picnic, October diner meeting, Christmas diner meeting and our after show barbecue. Those who use our shop really benefit from all the extra equipment we were able to buy. Without the shop fund we probably would not have the five new faceting machines, plus all the laps, the T.V. and V.C.R., the copier, two new burnou t ovens, new centrifuge parts and extra casting eqUipment, the steam cleaner, vulcanizer, wax injector, bead blaster, drill press. heavy shearing machine, compressor, sphere machine, flatlap and all the extra tools, saw blades, grinding wheels and many smaller things too numerous to mention. The scholarship fund too has benefited from the proceeds. Our $20.00 membership dues only pays for about two thirds of our annual shop rent, nothing el~e. To date we have 13 pieces contributed to the auction. Four pieces each from John Gullak and Doc and Shirley Buschke and one each from 5 other members. If you like our shop and all the equipment available, please consider donating something nice to our auction. Thank you, Joe Hammond

From the COUNTRY STORE

It sure was nice to see Russ and Lasca Sanborn back in the area. They have always been so very generous to our show. Thank you Russ and Lasca.

We are accepting donations of small bottles; spice and baby food bottles are perfect. We use them to put tumbled rocks into for the Country Store at the show.

Also if you have any slabs you can spare? They don't have to be good quality. We

Page 6: Dales to Remember - Mineral & Gem Society of Castro Valley 1997-09.pdf · September 1997 The PETROGRAPH 2 Library There are two new VHS tapes in the library: "ROCK CANDY" -Minerals

September 1997 The PETROGRRPH 4 need them for prizes for the spinning wheel at our show. Your old Rock&Gem, Gem & Mineral and Lapidary Journal would be appreciated, as we sell them at the Country Store as well. All money raised goes to c1 u b.

These items can all be dropped off at shop, in the meeting/Ii brary room under the big museum case on the floor. If you are donating slabs, box them up and label them "for Roman Groves- Country Store". And if you want magazines to go to the Country Store, box them up and label them as above. Call Roman Groves at 782-8032 so that he knows that material is there and he can deal with it.

Thank you very much, Viola & Roman Groves

CFMS SHOW RT UENTURR HOSTED BY UENTURR CLUB

The show called THE GOLD COASTTREASURE TROVE was held at the Ventura County Fairgrounds, June 20-22. It was the Federation's 58th annual show and convention. It was a three day show, with dealers, exhibits, competition and special exhibits. Most activities and dealers were indoors, but some dealers were allowed outside. (I guess because they did not want to pay the usual fee) These dealers had the lowest prices and were fairly well attended.

The show as a whole was very interesting and productive. It seemed to me the dealers were happy with their sales. However the prices were un usually high. It is very difficult to find slabs that are large enough and reasonable enough to help you with your in tarsia. Smaller slabs were plentiful.

The exhibits were very good and represented a wide spread variety of our hobby. You could find Intarsia by Conrad Grundke; some beautiful Cab Cases; Flats; Educational; Faceting (many); Fossils; Spheres (the person who had the large spheres

display at the Sacramento Faceting Seminar a few years ago was there with his exhibit again and it was beautiful. Son1e very large bowling balls! Many cases of individual material such as obsidian, jasper, agates, jewelry, handcrafted jewelry, hand work jewelry, minerals, carvings, beads, etc. It was quite a show. The Past Presidents's Cases were very nice; and different one to the other.

The food was lousy; only one outside vender served from his wagon. (no one can beat Castro Valley's. We put on the best spread)

Competition wasn't that good at this show. There were quite a few, but quality was down. Results will be reported in September or October CFMS Newsletter.

The Convention under the gavel of Pres ident Rosemary Young was well attended and well conducted. The report is separate.

The Awards Banquet and the Cracker Barrel (on separate evenings) were very successful and very humorous this year. Even the awards part was light and touching as the recipients were astonished or forgot they were recipients. Vern Korstad, Federation Director

Federation News by Uernon Korstad

ANSWERS TO OUR CLUB QUESTIONS: I asked around, and questioned Bill and

Izzie Burns about Desert Field trips and questioned the BLM representatives who attended the show and they all said that the rumors abou t Permits and charges and closings and blanket refusals to rockhound on Public Lands (BLM) were false and were just rumors. So, really nothing has changed.

NOW LET ME EXPLAIN THIS: Th re are -permits to collect in the National "orests but not on Public Lands (BLM). One e.g .. is Davis Creek; but that is Forest Servke lands, not BLM. It was found necessary by the Forest Service because so many people

Page 7: Dales to Remember - Mineral & Gem Society of Castro Valley 1997-09.pdf · September 1997 The PETROGRAPH 2 Library There are two new VHS tapes in the library: "ROCK CANDY" -Minerals

September 1997 The PETROGRRPH 5 ,were digging holes and not filling them in; and the cattle and sheep ranchers complained. You can see both view points. The BLM has been requested to do the same on all Public Lands, but so far they have resisted the call.

They warned us that if the rockhound ' continues to disregard their warnings and cautions, they will then take action. There are so many groups out there who use the desert and public lands that we are swamped by willful destruction, vandalism, drugs, rifle damage, etc.; forwhich the rockhounds are blamed (at least for some of it) that it may soon become necessary to add more rangers and shut down much of our hobby. It is too bad that we can't weed out the vandals and reserve our public pastimes. The Offroad Vehicle Clubs and the Recreational groups, and Rockhounds, etc. are banding together to lobby Congress to do

)somethingand then help Congress (orBLM). One such group is the ALAA. They have lobbied Congress and called other groups to do something. (they are mostly our Federation Club members at the present). If you would like to join this group, let me know; I have application blanks. (I reported on this last year and suggested that we join it; but so far, I am the only one from our club that has done so. The dues are $25, a fairly large amoun t; bu t they pay expenses for their representatives and lobbyists: so it is used wisely. I have no information at present how effective they are, but the BLM said it needs such group support as they give to make it possible for them BLM, to deal with these problems.

Over all it is safe to collect on BLM land and even in the Wilderness Areas, as long as you obey the rules. The rules are NO HOLES LEFT WHEN YOU LEAVE; NO

- VANDALISING, NO TRUCK LOADS COL-9 LECTED, NO NEW ROADS CREATED IN OR

DER TO GET TO COLLECTING AREAS. (they mean this) Only use existing roads, trails are considered trails. Park off the side of roads, but no more that 50 - 100 feet. No

driving to pick up large boulders left. Use common sense and you will get by and we will reserve the right to collect where we always have. There are certain places where holes and drifts may be left as they were; such as Wiley Wells and on private claims such as the Opal Hill Fire Agate claim. You can see reason for this. Sooo, get information from BLM offices in Barstow and others as to up-to-date information before you ven ture further.

MORE FEDERRTION NEWS FROM UERN

A. GENERAL ACTIONS: 1. The General Meeting on Sat. 21st, was

2. Future Shows: 1998-CFMS Show and Convention will be held in Monterey Fairgrounds, near Carmel, on July 3,4,5,1998. Hosted by Monterey, Paso Robles,Salinas and Santa Cruz. The theme is otters, "U Otter C the Show"!! $4 with flyer, get one from Vern. There has been no decision on the 1999 and 2001 Shows. The 2000 Show will be hosted by the Valley Prospectors Club, San Bernardino. However the show will be held at the Riverside Convention Cen ter in Riverside.

The Show will be held in that city.

2.EDUCATION THRU SHARING AWARD: There has been much discussion about the change of name and opera tion of this award. It used to be a single award for an outstanding person in the U.S. who was considered the on who shared knowledge with others and her/his talent. This was a prestigious award. The AFMS at one of their conventions changed the concept. Now it is called "Each Club Each Year One Rockhound". You can be sure that I objected strenuously (as I was one of those who helped found this award 15 yrs. ago). But I was overruled as the change took place at the AFMS level. So now each club can recOlnmend one Rockhound or a man and wife team for the award in one's own club. (we shall discuss this at our Board meeting)

3. CFMS SCHOLARSHIP COMMITTEE: They gave out six scholarships of $2000 ea.

4. AFMS SCHOLARSHIPS: They gave out the same amount, one for each Federation.

surance, junior Activities, Legal Advisor's report, Museum, Cab Cases, Program Aids, Editor's Bulletin Aids,Earth Science report and the Public Lands Advisory report, etc. CFMS JUNIOR REPORT

Thirty-six clubs have been identified this year as having a junior leader or someone t contact regarding junior activities.

Infonnation packets with new junior program ideas were given out at the meeting.

The Junior Leaders were very disappointed at the lack of interest and support at Ventura. They would suggest that each club discuss this issue at their club meetings and do something about it. We used to have great participation by juniors in our Hobby Activities and a good representation by them at our shows.

E UCRTION Several members took advantage of the summer c lass/ demonstra tion offerings. Doc Buschke presented Por-Wax, Vern McCullough showed how to enhance stones, Vern is also offered a several weeks class in Intarsia and Naomi Morgan offered a class in carving. She even provided the first stone. Doc also provided the first wax. Ask to see the student's results.

Cheryl Archer wiH be showing how to do a bead stitch. Her work at the Alameda County Fair was excellent.

Buzz Odem demonstrated a novel way to do a complicated ring mold. He developed an intricate way to get the wax product out of the mold.

Sorry we haven't found a soldering teacher yet. Keep ch ( king the bulletin board for an·- , nouncement of other classes or demonstrations. Shirley Bus( l1ke, Education Chairman

') GEM OF THE MONTH Another gem from New York who at

tended CCNY and Rochester University. While a student, our gem worked at Kodak in optics and was really impressed upon seeing how lenses could be cut from rock. Majors of this gem were Physics and Math and a smattering of remedial English. (I think this may be a joke, but you sure can't miss the N.Y. accent. After graduation our gem went to work at Brookhaven, a consortium of universities doing non-military work dealing with the atom smashers or as the trade would say "vulcanizing gradient synchotron" .

The boss was looking for a new project and went out to California where he discussed ideas with U.C.Berkeley and Lawrence Livermore. He was hired and pirated several workers from Brookhaven

)and our gem was one of them so off to Livermore and studies in Planetary Science and Earthquake phenomena followed. Living in Livermore was much too provincial for a New York City person. Now Berkeley was another story so off to Berkeley to live.

Soon marriage and two daughters followed. Susie and Sherry are both teachers. By now our gem lived on a ranch raising cattle and walnut trees. Although a rock collector from the age of eigh t, rock collecting became a passion when the couple decided to build a patio of local rocks. Her father helped or it might never have been finished. The design was created by the engineer in the family. It takes a lot of rock to build a patio and to this day, it shows to signs of wear.

Our gem decided in elementary school that she wanted to study physics. Her father was a developer and her mother was a ) ousewife. She often got into trouble for stealing her brother's chemistry set. At school she met the usual prej udice- girls don't study SCience, especially physical science. But they didn't know the determi-

; nation of our gem. She was kicked out of a mechanics class because it wasn't suitable.

By now you should have guesses who our gem is. Her husband is Bill, a civil engineer, who worked on such projects as dams and waterways. A joint project of theirs led to many family arguments when building a fish pond. It will never leak (her precision) and will meander like a water walkway should (his insistence). Bill is also the cooperative one who lugs her rocks into the shop each Wednesday where she works on in tarsia. '

Her first adventure with rocks after the patio was to make cabs and Ming trees. She also does fantastic stone carvings and has finished several intarsia, many of them featuring castles. Each one seems to get more intricate. Collecting is still a passion but the yard of their several acres seems to be getting pretty full. Bill Huberich has been helping her identify some of the collection. By now you should know the last name of our program chairman, Naomi Morgan. Oh yes, their patio has a nameMorgan's Folly.

Comparing notes with Naomi concerning prej udice and female scien tists brough t us many laughs. The barriers are lessened but they are still there ...... Shirley Buschke

ROCK RUMBLES I hope everyone had a great summer

and is ready to make that contribution for the auction.

, I recently caught Larry Ham working with Opticon to stabilize his sphere. My work with the stuff has been disappointing. So we asked Bill Walsh who told us the directions are nuts. A much larger percentage of hardener is needed than suggested in the directions. Anyone else have experience with the stuff? Larry also was the guy who bought that BIG chuck of charoite and it is one the way to being a large sphere.

Edna Antunovich had Hector Vilchis, junior member, busy working on a cab of Brazilian agate. Her daughter, Lynda, has

also been at the shop recently and we asked if she came in to check on her mother's progress with intarsia. A recent visitor was John Gordon's son john junior who is also interested in rocks. He's staying with his dad for awhile.

Everybody picks on Adrienne Diet. He bought a metal detector and went out with his wife to the gold country. He patiently explained how the thing works and his wife said she understood as he started the probe. "Is that what we are looking for?" she said as she picked up a gold nugget. Sometimes you can't win.

Hey, gang. The phone number for Doc Buschke and me is (510) 797-0744. For some reason, the roster picked up Doc's old office number. It went to the dentist who bought his practice and we don' t know who has it now.

We have a new Tuesday night faceting teacher. john Morra has taken over.

Darlene Pasq uini's grandsons, Stuart and Beren Godric, were at the shop the other night while their mother was in the faceting room. Third generation of rockhounds coming up. Do they know how capable their grandmother is? Newcomers may remember seeing those cute silver and rock critters in her case at our show. Her daughter loves petrified wood.

Tom Ford got a package from the Ven tura Gem and Mineral Society and he couldn't figure out why. He know no one there, hadn't attended the show, so what gives? Then he remembered Vern Korstad sold him some raffle tickets and guess what? He won a lovely pair of bookends!

The program for the Fremon t Art and Wine Festival featured our own Pat and Ed Rigor. They were featured with their soft drink can airplanes they sold at the Festival.

Naomi Morgan taught a class in carving and her prize pupil turned out to be Ednah Antunovich. She has even added turquoise and mother of pearl feathers like the Indians do. The others are trying to catch up.

She also managed to mangle her thumb so her carving and intarsia are on hold for ) awhile.

Be suspicious of that terrific bargain. The jewelers Vigilance COlnmittee, in their july magazine, reports that much jewelry sold in malls at 10 WORK gold is not. Assay by London's Goldsmith Hall determined the actual gold content was below 10. Counterfeit trademark jewelry was also found. The picture was a bit blurred but falnous cartoon figures could be identified. Five major manufacturers were implicated. If they don 't correct the problem, JVC will take legal action. Also question anyone who wants to sell you stock in an Indonesian gold mine. Seems the sellers had salted the mine. To you newcomers, that means they planted gold.

Frank Schlotter returned from a week long Accordion Camp in Oregon. He is already planning for the one next year in San Diego. Maybe we can get him to play for the spaghetti dinner.

Sam johnson made a specific gravity instrument to check on the identity of stones he has purchased for faceting. He also completed the competition stone for the March show. He urges others to do the same.

Don't forget the clean-up day at the shop on Saturday Sept. 13 and then on the 14th we have our picnic. See H.E. Neilson's articles re what food to bring on Sunday. On Saturday for clean-up bring rags, soap, cleaners, etc. This is a good time to bring the almost empty cleanser bottles and them leave them at the shop if they aren't empty yet. Speaking of clean-up, some of you slobs are leaving a mess. Wash out the mop to swab the floor. Dirty mops just spread the dirt around. The last week in july a filthy table had to be cleaned up. Someone had been polishing and left de- -bris all over the table. And please, if you must cut, use a slab of glass or stone underneath so you don't slash the table. The formica costs a lot of money.

REPORT ON BLACK DIAMOND MINE F IELO TRIP BY TOM FORD

On June 22, 20 plus members traveled to the Black Diamond Mine Regional Preserve, in Antioch. The Black Diamond Mine Dist., comprised of the 5 mining towns of Nortonvllle, Somersvllle, Stewartvllle, West Hartley and Judsonvllle, was a thriving coal mining area from the 1860's thru to the turn of the century. The nearly 4 mlllion tons of coal extracted from the area provided an energy source for the Bay Area that allowed this to become the industrial center of the West coast. Rising production costs along with the introduction of gas and 011 brought the mine to a close. ~ In the 1920's, a high grade of sand was

discovered near the deserted Nortonvllle and Somersville townsites. The sand from the Somersvllle mine was used to make glass by the Hazel-Atlas Glass Company of Oakland. The

Nortonville mine provided foundry sand until 1949 when competition from Belgian glass and the closing of the foundry closed them down. More than 1.8 million tons of sand had been minedl

After a short hike for the parking lot, our group was met by a ranger who was also the mining engineer in charge of restoring the mines to their original plan. We were given an explanation of the geological formation, a history of the mines and an understanding,'of the restoration plans. Then we were split into two groups, the afore mentioned engineer le;ading one group and another ranger leading the other. We were given hard hats to wear a flash light to carry even though the mines were well lit. Just in case.

We began in the sand mines and eventually exi ted past a coal seam. Shortly after we started, we were shown a fault line where the earth's crust has shifted and the strata through which we were walking abruptly changed from sand to an overburden material. The ranger said the sand seam continued about twenty feet below usl Also, while underground, you could always tell which way you were walking because the strata was tilted at a 28 degree angle toward Mt. Diablo to the south. The sand seams which we saw were 20 to 40 feet thick and hogged out into huge caverns supported by pillars of sand left for that purpose. The sand would be blasted loose, then scraped by a bucket system into chutes that discharged into rail cars. The cars were pushed out and discharged into another chute which fed a locomotive driven train which would haul the sand to its destination.

The coal mining was not so easy. Here the seam would run from four or five feet to 18 inches thick. The miners, typically young boys would crawl into the seam and wi th a hand pick and chip the coal loose. It would be scraped back to the seam and collected at a low point. There it would be loaded by hand into a sled which would be hauled up the seam to discharge out the top.

This area won't be open to the public for another year or so, but plans include an underground museum, of which we saw part. If you missed this trip, take advantage of it in the future as it was well worth the time. All our thanks to Naomi Morgan for making the arrangemen ts. It was great.
