Nutritional Regulation of Gut Function in Calves: Colostrum & MilkDr. Steele’s rst talk will focus on the management of gut development & function in calves through nutrition. One of the most critical management factors in calf survival and health is feeding a sucient amount of high-quality colostrum in order to improve passive immune transfer. However, further benets to gut function and health are now being recognized and will be reviewed in this presentation. In addition, some of the newest strategies for transitioning calves from colostrum to high planes of milk nutrition in the rst weeks of life will be discussed.

Nutritional Regulation of Gut Function in Calves: Weaning & BeyondDr. Steele’s second talk will address challenges in transitioning calves o a high milk diet onto solid feed. For calves consuming high quantities of milk, it is essential to develop & apply an optimal weaning strategy. In this talk, some of the key factors that determine the success of the weaning process such as the age at weaning and the step-down method will be reviewed. The presentation will conclude by discussing strategies for feeding calves after weaning.

Strategies for Silage SuccessEric’s presentation will focus on a number of strategies to achieve success in silage harvesting, storage & feeding. Key areas to be addressed include: packing protocols to achieve desired silage dry matter density; selection & proper application of silage inoculants; silage cover options; sizing of bunks & piles to facilitate optimum silage face removal during feed-out; silage face management during feed-out; and workplace safety when working around silage bunks & piles.
