Sponsorships are available for the 12th annual Chamber Challenge Golf Tourna-ment. This year’s Presenting Sponsor is BB&T. The Gold Sponsor is Maria Parham Medical Center. The event will take place at Kerr Lake Country Club on June 2 (rain date: June 3).

All Chamber members are invited to par-ticipate in this Captain’s Choice (Superball) tournament. One of the Chamber’s most popular fundraisers, this event is a great way to network with other Chamber member businesses.

After lunch at noon, the tournament will begin with a shotgun start. Prizes will be awarded for the top four teams, with other prizes being awarded for the longest drive, hole-in-one, closest to the pin and longest putt.

A dinner and awards ceremony will take place immediately following the tournament. Sponsoring teams and individual registra-tions are accepted on a first-come, first-served basis. A limited number of sponsor-

ships are still available for the event and for individual holes. Prize donations are also accepted.

Hole sponsorships are $375, which in-cludes meals, signage at the tee, and public-ity at the tournament for a four-person team. Individual entrants are welcomed ($85 rate) and will be placed on a four-person team.

Patron sponsorship level requires $100 or the donation of an equivalent gift item. Pa-tron status includes sponsorship of an indi-vidual award such as longest drive, closest to the pin or longest putt. Member businesses can also participate as prize donors for items to be included in gift bags for each player at the tournament.

Space is still available for a few teams, so reserve a spot today. To register or for more information, contact Tournament Director Sylvia Edwards at (252) 438-8414 or [email protected].

On March 23, a graduation celebration was held for the 2009-2010 session of the Teacher Executive Institute (TEI). The annu-al program, now in its 16th year, concluded with a dinner and ceremony at Middleburg Steak House.

Rep. Michael Wray, who represents Vance County in the N.C. General Assembly, was the featured speaker for the evening. He praised all of the program participants for their leadership in the educational field. He also encouraged them to continue to be lead-ers in their important work with students each day in the classroom. Wray added that he admires the educators for their efforts in their profession and for seeking to improve by participating in a program like the Teacher Executive Institute.

Each graduate was presented a framed certificate by George Fowler, executive director of the Vance County Public School Foundation, and Lisa Bolton of Walmart Distribution Center in Henderson, which sponsored the graduation and dinner.

The Teacher Executive Institute provides Vance County classroom teachers, counselors and media specialists with opportunities to tour local businesses, learn about the facili-ties and take part in informational seminars to broaden their skills base. The results strengthen the partnership between the professionals in education and the business community. The program offers educators a chance to network and share ideas with one another and also talk with business leaders about how they can work together to prepare students for the future work force.

The institute is funded by the Vance County Public School Foundation, a nonprof-it organization funded by private contribu-tions, foundation grants and local business

donations. The program is co-sponsored by the Henderson-Vance County Chamber of Commerce.

Following are the corporate sponsors for the 2009-2010 session:

• Gold sponsors: CenturyLink, JCPen-ney Co., Progress Energy, and Walmart Distribution Center #6091

• Silver sponsors: Carolina Quality, Poplar Creek Partners and Dr. Beverly Tucker

• Bronze sponsors: AAA Gas & Appli-ances, Barnett Properties, Golden Skillet, Henderson Family YMCA, J.M. White Funer-al Service, Rose Oil Company, Sylvan Learn-ing Center, Vance County Farm Bureau and Vance-Granville Community College;

EXPO 2010 set for Oct. 12

On March 25, the Henderson-Vance County Chamber held its quarterly Ambas-sadors’ Club meeting at the Golden Corral at 8:30 a.m. Golden Corral is one of the Chamber’s newest members.

“We really appreciate Manager Will Johnson opening up just for us. It is great to have a Chamber member that has breakfast meeting space as well,” said Rachel Hedrick, director of Membership Services. Approxi-mately 17 attendees were treated to a buffet that included pancakes, French toast, eggs, grits and other breakfast fare. Ambassa-dors used this time to sign up to volunteer at Meet Me in the Street events and the

upcoming Chamber Challenge Golf Tourna-ment. They also discussed keeping in touch with new members to aid them in making the most of their Chamber investment.

The Ambassador Club is composed of vol-unteers from Chamber member businesses. These volunteers attend ribbon-cuttings, maintain contact with Chamber members, and volunteer at special Chamber events. The employee and the business they repre-sent get exposure in the community and in Chamber publications. If you are interested in becoming a Chamber ambassador, please contact Rachel Hedrick at (252) 438-8414 or e-mail [email protected].

Lighting technology update provided

money saving options for small

businessesThe Henderson-Vance County Cham-

ber of Commerce hosted an informative luncheon entitled “Lighting Technology Update for Small Business” at the Hen-derson Country Club on April 8.

Progress Energy lighting experts dis-cussed energy-saving techniques, lighting technology, and rebates that are available to small business. In these tough eco-nomic times, the information presented in this session proved very beneficial to the attending companies and offered opportu-nities to improve their bottom line.

The event was free to Chamber mem-bers and was underwritten by Progress Energy and Parkview Plaza.

Rep. Jim Crawford has been ap-pointed to the House Select Committee on Small Business.

The House Select Committee on Small Business is responsible for studying issues related to small busi-ness including access to credit; techni-cal assistance and support needs of small businesses; the impact of exist-ing economic development efforts on small business development, and tax credits for small businesses to spur job creation.

“I am delighted that the Democrats are paying special attention to small businesses, and I look forward to work-ing with the committee to come up with some ideas to preserve and promote small business interests in the state of North Carolina,” said Crawford.

Crawford is a small business owner

currently serving his 13th term in the House of Representatives. He is chairman of the House Committee on Appropriations and vice chairman of House Transportation. Several sessions earlier, Crawford organized the House Small Business Caucus to monitor rel-evant legislation and continues to chair that caucus.

Crawford appointed to small business committeeWith 19 announced retirements already

(and nearly 20 other legislative races expected to be hotly contested in November), there will definitely be changes in who serves in the N.C. General Assembly next year. What’s not yet certain is what organizations will be most en-gaged during the upcoming elections when new leaders are selected. Make no mistake about it — the organizations that do the best job of being informed, involved and organized during the 2010 elections will play a stronger hand in shaping North Carolina’s future!

North Carolina needs elected representatives who understand what it takes for businesses to be competitive and successful to spur economic recovery and keep and create jobs. Unfortunate-ly, many of the legislators who are retiring from the state legislature were knowledgeable about business issues — about what employers need and what the state needs to be globally competi-tive to attract and retain the best jobs. That is why we must be informed about and involved in the 2010 elections — and why our members and their employees must be as well.

Polling shows that voters increasingly want to know if a candidate’s stated position on key

business issues would adversely impact the companies for which they are employed. Even so, only a small percentage of employees actu-ally receive any communication from employers about voting or key issues that would impact their ability to succeed and grow. The North Carolina Prosperity Project (NCP2) provides the tools to bridge this critical gap. NCP2 is a free, non-partisan, voluntary program provided through the North Carolina Chamber for local Chambers and their members.

NCP2 services are free for businesses, including a website and e-communication tools. Visit the NCP2 Web site at www.north-carolinaprosperity.org and the Moore County Chamber’s co-branded NCP2 site (go to www.moorecountychamber.com and click on “Quick Links” and “Chamber’s Prosperity Project.”) To learn more about NCP2 or sign up for free (or enhanced) NCP2 services, contact Joe Stewart at the North Carolina Chamber at [email protected] or (919) 836-1413.

In the fall of 2009, Central Baptist Church began a new outreach program to touch the lives of the people in the community in a very real and practical way. “Central Cares” is a quarterly event where a number of the church members go out into the community on a Saturday with the purpose of serving the people of Henderson and giving a message of hope through sharing the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

On October 24, 2009, members of Central Baptist showed their care for the community in three distinct ways. Ap-proximately 185 plates of food were served at three distribution points: Springwood Apartments, Fire Station No. 1 and a group of senior apartments located on Coble Boulevard. Church members shared their faith, providing spiritual counseling and Christian resources at these loca-tions. Secondly, landscaping improve-ments were made to the playground and flagpole areas at E.M. Rollins Elementary School. Lastly, Central Baptist members partnered with Rebuilding Hope Minis-tries to make needed repairs to a lady’s home in Henderson.

Central Baptist Church is excited to continue this ministry and see it grow in 2010. “It is our prayer that God would continue to direct our hearts and hands to serve him where he is working. We find joy in meeting physical needs, but shame on us if we are not pointing each other Pictured (left to right) are Diane Davis, E.M. Rollins Elementary’s media specialist; Pat Frazier, E.M. Equipping Faith Church

The Bridge Program is being sponsored by The Global Training Center at Equipping Faith Church located at 549 South William St. in Henderson in collaboration with the Henderson Vance Weed and Seed Program. The program was designed by Pastor Orlando R. Terry to reinforce the knowl-edge and skills needed to be active in a technical world.

The program offers assistance to youth in the community with developing various computer skills to prepare them for a fast-paced world of technology. The program will work to reinforce technology skills while offering a safe, challenging learning environment. The Bridge Program also offers adults in the community job training and basic computer training, including Microsoft Word, Excel and keyboard training. As the use of technology continues to grow, the need for computer skills is rapidly increasing. The Bridge Program offers hope and a bridge to connect the community with today’s technology. The Bridge Program is open to serve Henderson and Vance County youth Monday through Friday from 3:15-6:15 p.m. Adult program hours will be announced. The church may be contacted at (252) 438-3311.

need. The program involves giving out backpacks filled with nutritious and nonperishable food to select school children on Fridays so that the children will have food over the weekends when they do not have access to school breakfasts and lunches.

These children are selected by the school guidance counselor based on need. The church is currently providing backpacks for 20 children at E.M. Rollins Elementary School. “Guidance counselor Pat Frazier and Media Specialist Diane Davis have

Greater Ransom Way Of The Cross Temple at 90 South Lake Lodge Road Extension in Henderson offers community outreach in the form of a food pantry and soup kitchen every first and third Saturday of the month as well as various nursing home minis-tries sponsored by the Women’s Department, ministers and dea-cons. For more information about the church and its outreach opportunities, contact Bishop Johnny L. Alston, pastor, or Elder Michael R. Alston, assistant pastor, at (252) 492-1824.

been very helpful and are an integral part of the program,” said Rusty Edwards, associate minister.

This year, the Backpack Buddies project has been supported by donations from church members that are above their usual contribu-tions. The church would like to expand the number of children helped and foresees the need for outside contributions. They are hop-ing for business and corporate support. Based on this year’s figures, funds is the amount of $25 per month or $225 per year are needed for each child.

Also, knowing the need to feed more hungry children in Vance County, First Baptist would like to see other churches and organiza-tions get involved with other schools in this worthwhile mission. Members of the Mission Committee at First Baptist would be willing to share their experiences and expertise in helping begin this project at other churches/organizations. Contact persons at First Baptist include Nancy Strickland (492-4985), Lois Murphy (438-5045) and Becky Faulkner (438-5775).

Other mission projects at First Baptist Church include the At Risk Kids (ARK) Program. This is a once-a-week after-school tutoring session held at the church for 15-20 E.M. Rollins Elementary School children who are selected by counselors. In addition, the church, in conjunction with Shiloh Baptist and Greater Little Zion Holy Church, hosts a once-a-year mission project called the “Back to School” block party. The event which is held in August, where over a thousand backpacks filled with school supplies are handed out. “Celebration of the day includes lots of free food and games. It is usually hot and always a great day,” says Edwards.

First United Methodist Church

First United Methodist Church has adopted both Dabney Elementary and Pinkston Street Elementary schools in the Vance County school system. The church’s mission outreach with Dabney started over eight years ago, with Pinkston Street Elementary added over five years ago.

The church supports the schools with prayer (62 prayer partners), clothing, school supplies, book bags, food, eye glasses, and shoes. When the need arises, they have con-tributed to field day activities and paid for field trips when students could not.

In addition to the material needs, the

church provides classroom volunteers for reading, math, chess, lunch buddies and story telling. The schools make the church aware of their needs and every effort is made to fill their requests. Part of this outreach is to encourage those who work in the schools by providing them with notes and treats on various special days just to let them know how much what they do every day for the children of Vance County is appreciated.

“We receive so much love and appreciation from the principals and their faculties and staffs. We are glad to be a part of what takes place in the lives of the students and those who educate them,” said Virginia Paynter, Local Missions chairperson. Contact Paynter at (252) 438-8791 for more information on starting an outreach program.

Church of the Holy Innocents

The Church of the Holy Innocents has maintained for many years a commitment to outreach as an expression of its minis-try. There is a line item for outreach in the church’s annual budget that is administered by a committee which reviews needs and requests from charities and makes recom-mendations to the vestry for final approval. The church vestry has voted to increase the outreach budget by 10 percent annually. The church makes grants each year on the local, state, national and international level. Annual grants are made to the Rector’s Discretion-ary Fund for Episcopal Outreach; Lifeline Ministries; Penick Village; St. Augustine’s Col-lege in Raleigh; St. Mary’s School; Thompson Children’s Home; and Food For The Poor. Last year, over 65 percent of outreach funds were allocated to local Vance County chari-ties and organizations including Rebuilding Hope Ministries; Lifeline Outreach Ministries; United Way; and the Boys and Girls Clubs. Immediately after the earthquake in Haiti, funds were sent to the International Episcopal Relief Fund. Recently, emergency funds were

allocated to the Bianca House here in Vance County.

In the mid-1980s, the congregation joined with several other local churches to form Area Christians Together in Service (ACTS), which is headquartered directly across the street from the church and whose programs have provided assistance to many needy families in the area, including a soup kitchen and food pantry. Besides parish involvement as volunteers in a number of local programs such as ACTS, the blessing of additional land and

buildings has presented opportunities for vari-ous forms of community service.

The Cooper House, a center for reha-bilitation of women who have suffered from substance abuse, began as the area’s first battered women’s shelter, whose founding director was a member of Holy Innocents. The church’s Parish House is large enough for pub-lic meetings and gatherings, and is frequently used by various groups within the community including Alcoholics Anonymous and the Boy Scouts. The lot at the corner of Walnut and Breckenridge streets (Jackson Park) is leased to the city each year for a nominal sum and is used as a playground and recreational area by neighborhood children and youth.

In addition to its outreach budget, Holy Innocents is blessed with several endowment funds directed to outreach. These include The Endowment Fund for outreach, the Genevieve Cooper Smith Fund and the Wolfe Scholar-ship Fund. New projects for outreach will also include the local cooperative effort of several local churches to provide a weekend soup kitchen as well as assistance with the men’s shelter.

Information about the church can be found at www.churchoftheholyinnocents.org.
