CULTURAL RELATIONS II
Chinese names are often made up of two or three characters. First names are sometime composed of two characters. One of these characters would represent their generation. So siblings of the same generation in the extended family were easily identified. However this rule is only used for males, not females.
Traditionally, words with positive meanings are chosen for names. Some words are specifically chosen for boys, e.g. strength, strong, good future, etc.; and some are favored for girls, e.g. beauty, jade, elegant. So the most important element of a Chinese name is not its sound, but its meaning.
