Shantmanu, Chief Electoral Officer (CEO), J&K, called on Governor and apprised him about the functioning of the CEO's office, particularly the various measures initiated for creating awareness among peo- ple about their "Right To Vote", and the continuous process of updating of electoral rolls and other important activities. Dr. Aziz Hajini, Secretary, JK Academy of Art, Culture and Languages also called on Governor and briefed him about the activities of the Academy which he is planning to initiate in the fields of indigenous art, literature, languages etc. within and outside the State. He also apprised the Governor about the progress so far achieved in regard to the renovation of Abhinav Theatre, Tehzeeb Mahal and Tagore Hall. The Governor urged Dr. Hajini to strive vigorously in pursuing the objectives of the Academy in promoting quality and excellence in all its activi- ties and wished him high suc- cess in all his endeavours. Meanwhile, Dr. Pradeep Kumar Sharma, Vice- Chancellor, Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology- Jammu (SKUAST-J), called on Governor and briefed him about the status of admissions to the under-graduate and post-gradu- ate courses; the pressing aca- demic and administrative issues relating to the institution; and the difficulties arising from the inadequacy of financial resources. The Governor advised the Vice Chancellor to take sus- tained initiatives for boosting research and extension activi- ties; securing visible improve- ment in the production and pro- ductivity levels and ensuring efficient functioning of all the KVKs under the University. Avtar Bhat JAMMU, July 9: The heavy rains which lashed the Jammu region and some areas of Pahalgam Base Camp in Kashmir valley early this morning have not dampened the spirit of Amarnath pilgrims as 16,410 yatris drawn from different parts of country paid obeisance at holy cave on the eighth day of darshan today. Thousands of yatris from dif- ferent parts of the country continue to report the State daily for their onwards journey to holy cave sur- rounded by glaciers in deep Himalyas in South Kashmir dis- trict of Anantnag. According to an official spokesman, 16,410 pilgrims per- formed darshan at holy cave today with this the total number of pil- grims visiting the cave shrine since the first batch of yatris left the Bhagwati Nagar Yatri Niwas here on July 1 has touched 1,21, 328. The spokesman said there is total hustle and bustle on yatra tracks and on twin base camps of Nunwan –Pahalgam and Baltal where thousands of pilgrims report daily. He said 5958 pilgrims left from Baltal to holy cave early this morning for darshan while 1055 left by air. Besides 2385 pilgrims left from Nunwan Base camp for holy cave this morning. He said the weather on both the tracks remained cloudy today while it drizzled at Pahalgam in the morning however yatra continues smoothly. One yatri identified as Suresh Jatav, 32, S/o Nakzi Ram of Ferozpora, Indore MP died at holy cave due to cardiac arrest. His body has been kept in mortu- ary near Cave shrine. With this one more death, the toll in ongoing yatra has touched five, he added. Meanwhile some yatris com- plained lack of facilities both at Baltal and Nunwan base camps. They said that Guest House at Baltal has no basic facilities and still Rs 1200 are charged from per yatri for one night haltage. The yatris at Jammu Haat also com- plained problems saying there are no langer facilities when the pil- grims are standing in long queues from 4am to 2pm or more. “The Government should open langer in Jammu Haat as hundreds of pil- grims visit there daily for registra- tion and they have to remain hun- gry till the registration process finishes for the day’’, said Ram Kumar a pilgrim from Ratlam MP. The Additional DC Jammu, Dr Piyush Singla who is also the Nodal Officer for yatra said that 1714 token slips for almost 3000 pilgrims have been issued for Jammu Haat today. Only these yatris who have been given the slips will be registered for next two days and not the extra yatra as the quota of 2500 pilgrims at Jammu Haat has been already exhausted. Dr Singla said the unregistered yatris coming from other parts of country should not approach for registration at Jammu Haat during next two days. A fresh batch of 1885 pilgrims left the Bhagwati Nagar Yatri Niwas here, today under tight security arrangements in a caval- cade of 53 vehicles for holy cave. They included 1494 male, 262 female, 29 children and 100 Sadhus. However these pilgrims were stopped at Seri Udhampur, Panthal and Dangoo due to land slides on National Highway. Later the NH was restored for traffic in the afternoon and the yatris left for the twin base camps. Over 16,000 perform darshan; one more pilgrim dies, toll 5 Excelsior Correspondent SRINAGAR, July 9: National Conference Working President Omar Abdullah while expressing grief and sorrow over the demise of Party leader Ghulam Nabi Mir of Pampore, said National Conference was a repository of sacrifices that have been rendered to safe- guard the honor of the State and its people. Paying glowing trib- utes to Late Ghulam Nabi Mir, the National Conference Working President said the party's strength at the grass- roots level was due to the self- less struggles of leaders and activists like Mir who served the party with remarkable sin- cerity and dedication. Omar Abdullah visited the residence of the Late NC Leader at Pampore, who passed away on Wednesday after a brief period of illness. Late Ghulam Nabi Mir had contested as the National Conference candidate in the Assembly elections in 2008. He was presently the Block President Pampore for National Conference. Mr. Omar Abdullah spent time with the family of Late Mir and highlighted his contribution to the party at crucial junctures and said in his selfless service to the party we could draw inspiration to fight the battle for the honor and dignity of the State and its people in present circumstances where political parties and leaders had back- tracked on their ideologies and promises for the petty trap- pings of power. "National Conference has a proud legacy of people like Mir Sahib and our cadre and youth activists today continue to emulate the hard-work and commitment of their predeces- sors in their efforts to make the party stronger at the grassroots level. National Conference repository of valiant sacrifices: Omar Amarnath yatris on their way to holy cave near Pissotop on Thursday. -Excelsior/Sajad Dar Div Com discusses inclusion, exclusion of areas from new admn units Excelsior Correspondent JAMMU July 9: In order to prevent overlapping and anom- alies to the jurisdiction of sec- toral/district officers with regard to new administrative units, Divisional Commissioner Jammu, Dr. Pawan Kotwal, today discussed inclusion and exclusion of villages /areas from newly carved out administrative units with Deputy Commissioners of Poonch, Doda, Ramban, Reasi, Samba and Kathua districts through video conferencing. Assistant Commissioner Central, Sachin Dev Singh besides other concerned officers were also present on the occasion. The Divisional Commissioner asked the con- cerned Deputy Commissioner to submit a preliminary report within a week's time regarding present status of pockets irra- tionally attached with the new administrative units. In this regard, he asked them to con- duct a thorough exercise with proper mapping of their respec- tive districts so that rationaliza- tion, resettlement of the same with the original tehsil/niabat/sub-division is ensured. Divisional Commissioner asked the concerned DCs to dis- cuss issues of overlapping of jurisdictions with the concerned sectoral/district officer as well as concerned MLA and furnish a self contained comprehensive proposal for re-allocation of areas of various division/sub- division of different depart- ments. Besides, wherever required their jurisdiction is to be made co-terminus with the jurisdiction of the concerned district so that administrative monitoring of the activities of the departments and develop- ment works are made more effective to redress public griev- ances. Electoral Rolls for ULB elections soon: CEO Excelsior Correspondent SRINAGAR, July 9: Chief Electoral Officer, Shantmanu today discussed issues related to the preparation of the electoral rolls to be used for the elections to the Urban Local Bodies in the State. The meeting was attended by Deputy Chief Electoral Officer, Rishpal Singh, Additional SIO J&K, Saleem Khan, Secretary SMC Srinagar, Hilal Ahmad Deewani and other officials of the Elections Department and Municipal Corporation Srinagar besides repre- sentatives from the Roll Vendors of the department M/s TJ Enterprises and M/s Comptech Pvt Ltd. The Chief Election Officer asked the Additional SIO NIC J&K who is looking after the Electoral Roll Management System (ERMS) Project of the State to provide the updated data of the electoral rolls along with all the supplements to the concerned ven- dors for printing of the electoral rolls. After printing, the rolls will be provided to all the Electoral Registration Officers of the Municipal Corporations / Councils / Committees for polling stations wise and ward wise mapping. The bifurcated electoral rolls will be again printed and placed before the electors as draft roll for the purpose of summary revision. The Chief Electoral Officer stressed upon all the concerned officials and non-officials to start their allotted work immediately so that it is completed as per schedule.
