Walter was born July 17, 1930, in Jackson, Miss., to Elbe and Mattie (Smith) Dunson. At a young age, he professed his belief in Jesus at Hope Spring Baptist Church in Jackson. Later in life, he became a member of New Home Missionary Baptist Church, where his membership remained until his homego- ing. In 1950, Walter enlisted in the U.S. Army, where he served two years. After dis- charge, he resided in Chi- cago, Ill., where he met his soon to be wife, Mary Ew- ing. In 1953, they married and were happily married for 60 years. To this union three children were born: Darnell (wife, LaQuisha) Dunson of Broseley, Mo., Walter C. Dunson Jr., who preceded him in death and Kevin Dunson of Lancaster, Calif. Walter also had a daughter, Velma Shane, who also preceded him in death. In 1985, after serv- ing 33 years with the U.S. Postal Service in Chicago, Walter and Mary moved to Broseley. Other survivors also include a brother, Elbe (wife, Jewell) Dunson Jr. of Detroit, Mich.; a sister, Helen Young of Chicago; 11 grandchildren; 15 great- grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. His parents and two sisters, Annie Mary Tolliver and Morris Ella Williams, also preceded him in death. Visitation will begin at 10 a.m. Monday at New Home Missionary Baptist Church in Broseley with the funeral service following at 11 a.m. The Rev. Andrew Jefferson will officiate and the Rev. Johnny Williams will present the eulogy. A repass dinner will immedi- ately follow at the church. Burial for Walter will be Wednesday at Hope Springs Cemetery in Jackson, Miss. Harold Duggins SHELBYVILLE, Ill. — Harold L. “Monk” Duggins, 86, of Shelbyville, Ill., passed away at 11:02 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 14, 2014 in Shelby Memorial Hospital, Shelbyville. Monk was born April 8, 1927 in Pemiscot County, Mo., the son of William Oliver “Pat” Duggins and Louise Hounihan Duggins. He married Vesta Shain on April 2, 1955 in Hernan- do, Miss. After her passing, he married Mary Pauline Shuler Boyer. Monk retired from the U.S. Army Corps of Engi- neers in 1989. He served his country, honorably, in the United States Army dur- ing WWII. He was well known for his many years of volunteer service to the elderly while assisting in nursing homes in Shelbyville. He was a member of Masonic Lodge #53, American Legion Post #71 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #4829 all of Shelbyville. Surviving are his wife, Pauline Duggins; sisters: Roma Dortch and Lois Louise Cunningham, both of Fisk, Mo.; daughter, Mary Beth Land of Shelbyville; stepsons: Paul Bennett of Big Bear City, Calif., and Tony (Donna) Bennett of Macks Creek, Mo.; grand- daughters: Dena (Steve) Darnell of Shelbyville, Christie (Tony) Meyer of Springfield, Ill., Tonya (Shawn) Kaser of Raymore, Mo.; sister-in-law, Sue (Richard) Hedrick of Byrnes Mill, Mo., several great- grandchildren; nieces; neph- ews; and a host of friends, especially Bill Howard. He was preceded in death by wife, Vesta; parents and brothers: Delbert Duggins, James Duggins and Oliver William Duggins Jr. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday in the First Church of the Nazarene, 701 West North Third St., Shelbyville. Pastor Greg Breeden will officiate. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. until the time of the service on Saturday in the church. Silkwood Wells, 79, of Big Pine Key, Fla., and Doniphan entered into eternal peace Sunday, Jan. 12, 2014, at the Arbors in Cape Girardeau, Mo. Shirley was born Sept. 22, 1934, in Bardley, Mo., daughter of Thurlow and Jettie Silkwood (Dale). She is survived by her son, Michael Shenberg of Cape Gi- rardeau (Sherry); two sis- ters; Jo Ann Bell of Poplar Bluff and Merle Henning of Alexis, Ill.; two grand- children, Brent and Hayden Shenberg; two stepsons, HD Wells II (Jan) and Aubrey Wells (Beth) of Do- niphan; and grandchildren, Erin Thompson of Austin, Texas, and HD Wells III of Poplar Bluff. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Harrison; three brothers, William, Noble and Hugh; and four sisters, Sybil, Fay, Lillian and Mary. Shirley moved to St. Louis after graduating high school and she worked at Bell Telephone. Shirley and Morris Shenberg married and were in the grocery business together. They later moved to Las Vegas, Nev., in 1971. She returned to Doniphan in 1979. Shirley enjoyed collecting antiques and dolls, painting, her grandchildren and pursuing her faith. She was a member of First Church of God. She married Harrison Wells on Jan. 28, 1985. Har- rison and Shirley traveled throughout Europe, South America, Asia and Australia in the 80s and 90s. They wintered in Big Pine Key for many years and made it their permanent home in 2010. Shirley was a member of the Lower Keys Wom- en’s Club, the Lower Key’s Home Owner’s Society and the Red Hatter’s Club. Visitation for Shirley and Harrison will be from 5-8 p.m. Friday at Edwards Fu- neral Home. Their funeral will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at First Church of God with the Rev. Larry Bashaw of- ficiating. Mrs. Jones was born Dec. 16, 1922, in Ravenden Springs, Ark. She was a florist and enjoyed fishing, gardening, traveling and outdoor work. She was a mem- ber of the Naylor Church of Christ. On June 14, 1943, she married Armand Jones in Egypt, Ark. He preceded her in death on May 26, 1975. Survivors include her three daughters, Loretta Willcut (Dave) of Naylor, Mo., Jeanie DeBord (Mike Hovis) of Neelyville, Mo., and Mona Johnson (Randy) of Harviell, Mo.; one son, Donald Jones (Felicia) of Doniphan, Mo.; 10 grand- children, Rhonda Jung- bluth, Tom Colley, Matt Colley, William McNece, Dave and James Willcut, Lorie Wilson, Jason Tharp, Brian Johnson and Lindsy Wilson; and nine great- grandchildren. Monk retired from the U.S. Army Corps of Engi-neers in 1989. He served his country, honorably, in the United States Army dur-ing WWII.

He was well known for his many years of volunteer service to the elderly while assisting in nursing homes in Shelbyville.

He was a member of Masonic Lodge #53, American Legion Post #71 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #4829 all of Shelbyville.

Surviving are his wife, Pauline Duggins; sisters: Roma Dortch and Lois Louise Cunningham, both of Fisk, Mo.; daughter, Mary Beth Land of Shelbyville; stepsons: Paul Bennett of Big Bear City, Calif., and Tony (Donna) Bennett of Macks Creek, Mo.; grand-daughters: Dena (Steve) Darnell of Shelbyville, Christie (Tony) Meyer of Springfield, Ill., Tonya (Shawn) Kaser of Raymore, Mo.; sister-in-law, Sue (Richard) Hedrick of Byrnes Mill, Mo., several great-grandchildren; nieces; neph-ews; and a host of friends, especially Bill Howard.

He was preceded in death by wife, Vesta; parents and brothers: Delbert Duggins, James Duggins and Oliver William Duggins Jr.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday in the First Church of the Nazarene, 701 West North Third St., Shelbyville. Pastor Greg Breeden will officiate. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. until the time of the service on Saturday in the church.

A graveside service with military rites will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday in Ash Hill Cemetery near Fisk. Memorials may be made to the First Church of the Nazarene in Shelbyville or Donors Choice.

Stoll earns spot on Southeast dean’s list

Ryan Stoll of Poplar Bluff, Mo., has been named to the Dean’s List for aca-demic achievement during the fall 2013 semester at Southeast Missouri State University.

Students named to the list earned at least a 3.5 grade point average on a 4.0 scale and completed at least 12 degree credit hours dur-ing the fall session.

Shirley J. Silkwood Wells, 79, of Big Pine Key, Fla., and Doniphan entered into eternal peace Sunday, Jan. 12, 2014, at the Arbors in Cape Girardeau, Mo.

Shirley was born Sept. 22, 1934, in Bardley, Mo., daughter of Thurlow and Jettie Silkwood (Dale).

She is survived by her son, Michael Shenberg of Cape Gi-rardeau (Sherry); two sis-ters; Jo Ann Bell of Poplar Bluff and Merle Henning of Alexis, Ill.; two grand-children, Brent and Hayden Shenberg; two stepsons, HD Wells II (Jan) and Aubrey Wells (Beth) of Do-niphan; and grandchildren, Erin Thompson of Austin, Texas, and HD Wells III of Poplar Bluff.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Harrison; three brothers, William, Noble and Hugh; and four sisters, Sybil, Fay, Lillian and Mary.

Shirley moved to St. Louis after graduating high school and she worked at Bell Telephone. Shirley and Morris Shenberg married and were in the grocery business together. They later moved to Las Vegas, Nev., in 1971. She returned to Doniphan in 1979. Shirley enjoyed collecting antiques and dolls, painting, her grandchildren and pursuing her faith. She was a member of First Church of God.

She married Harrison Wells on Jan. 28, 1985. Har-rison and Shirley traveled throughout Europe, South America, Asia and Australia in the 80s and 90s. They wintered in Big Pine Key for many years and made it their permanent home in 2010. Shirley was a member of the Lower Keys Wom-en’s Club, the Lower Key’s Home Owner’s Society and the Red Hatter’s Club.

Visitation for Shirley and Harrison will be from 5-8 p.m. Friday at Edwards Fu-neral Home. Their funeral will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at First Church of God with the Rev. Larry Bashaw of-ficiating. Burial will be at Bardley Cemetery.

Carlena Jones, 91, of Poplar Bluff, Mo. died Wednesday, Jan. 15, 2014, at Poplar Bluff Regional Medical Center.

Mrs. Jones was born Dec. 16, 1922, in Ravenden Springs, Ark. She was a florist and enjoyed fishing, gardening, traveling and outdoor work. She was a mem-ber of the Naylor Church of Christ.

On June 14, 1943, she married Armand Jones in Egypt, Ark. He preceded her in death on May 26, 1975.

Survivors include her three daughters, Loretta Willcut (Dave) of Naylor, Mo., Jeanie DeBord (Mike Hovis) of Neelyville, Mo., and Mona Johnson (Randy) of Harviell, Mo.; one son, Donald Jones (Felicia) of Doniphan, Mo.; 10 grand-children, Rhonda Jung-bluth, Tom Colley, Matt Colley, William McNece, Dave and James Willcut, Lorie Wilson, Jason Tharp, Brian Johnson and Lindsy Wilson; and nine great-grandchildren.

Besides her husband she was preceded in death by her parents, David C. Loo-ney and Ella C. Lane Loo-ney; three sisters, Ruthie Millay, Geneva Attebery and Hazel Looney; and one brother, Freeman Owen.
