VISIT A WORKING SHIPYARD The historic Mayflower II, which is owned by Plimoth Plantation, arrived at Mystic Seaport Museum in early November 2016 for a multi-year restoration in the Henry B. duPont Preservation Shipyard. The project is scheduled for completion prior to 2020: the 400th anniversary of the Pilgrims’ arrival. The vessel is a full-scale reproduction of the original Mayflower. The details of the ship, from the solid oak timbers and tarred hemp rigging to the wood and horn lanterns and hand-colored maps, were carefully re-created to give visitors a sense of what the original 17th-century vessel was like. EXPLORE OUR NEWEST EXHIBITS WHEN THIS YOU SEE, REMEMBER ME, R.J. SCHAEFER BUILDING 2 When This You See, Remember Me explores advances in photographic technology and techniques in late 1800s studio photography, from the perspective of both the sitter and the photographer. Drawing on portraits in the Museum’s collection by local photographers Everett Scholfield and George Tingley, the exhibit also features their original backdrops, cameras, coupons, and ads. DEATH IN THE ICE: THE MYSTERY OF THE FRANKLIN EXPEDITION, THOMPSON EXHIBITION BUILDING 1 In 1845, Sir John Franklin led the Royal Navy’s sturdiest two ships into the Arctic to great international acclaim. His mission: to discover a Northwest Passage to Asia. Franklin and his crew of 128 men were never heard from again. Thirty-six expeditions were launched from several countries in a decades-long effort to discover the fate of Franklin’s men. This exhibition pulls together the strands of this epic history, including expedition materials from London and the Inuit culture and knowledge that led to the wrecks’ discoveries in the Canadian Arctic Archipelago in 2014 and 2016. The exhibition will show artifacts, which were raised from HMS Erebus, seen for the first time in 170 years. FAMILY FUN Children’s Museum 10 Playscapes 7 SEAFARING VILLAGE Visit the houses and gardens of a 19th-century New England seafaring village. The Buckingham-Hall House, originally situated in Saybrook, Connecticut, was transported to the Museum on a barge in 1951. Meet a roleplayer, explore the businesses and shops, and talk to interpreters demonstrating 19th-century trades and crafts. The James D. Driggs Shipsmith Shop was built in New Bedford, Massachusetts, in 1885. It is the only manufactory of ironwork for the whaling industry known to have survived from the 19th century. 10 Numbers indicate corresponding numbers on the map Activities with music Must-sees for families with children EXHIBITS OPEN 10 AM-4 PM GROUNDS OPEN 10 AM-5 PM Home Port 4 Treworgy Planetarium 9 Toy Boats 38
