National Art LibraryThe museum houses the National Art Library, containing over 750,000 books, it is one of the world’s largest libraries dedicated to the study of fine and decorative arts.

Theo Van DoesburgIn 1916 he helped to found the artists’ groups De Anderen and De Sphinx, and through them met artists and architects such as Piet Mondrian and J.J.P. Oud. This association resulted in the publication of the journal De Stijl, which aimed to unite art and architecture, and the strength of its message meant that the work of its contributors was often described as ‘De Stijl’.

Barbara NessimNessim has also worked as an illustrator and fashion designer, creating everything from shoes and textiles to commercial graphics. She has produced cover illustrations for Time, Rolling Stone and the New York Times magazine, plus adverts for Levis and Ralph Lauren.

Paul SmithPaul Smith chose three objects three objects from the V&A collection that reflected his own design.

Oil PaintingThe V&A Paintings collection includes over 2,000 British and European oil paintings.

Exhibition RoadThe road gets its name from the Great Exhibition of 1851 which was held just inside Hyde Park at the northern end of the road.

AlbertopolisCentred in Exhibition Road, the name “Albertopolis” derived from its association with Prince Albert, the Albert Memorial and the major cultural institutions associated with him. These include the Natural History Museum, the Science Museum and the Royal Albert Hall.

OvidOvid was a Roman poet who is best known as the author of the three major collections of poetry, the Heroides, Amores and Ars Amatoria, and of the Metamorphoses, a mythological hexameter poem.

Paul De LamerieHis success lay in his exceptional powers of invention and creation, but also in his ability as a businessman, retailing some astonishingly spectacular silverware from his own workshop and also using the best external suppliers in the trade.

Italian RenaissanceThe Renaissance style was inspired by the art and architecture of ancient Rome. It originated in Italy in the 14th century and gradually spread across the whole of Europe. The V&A holds the largest Italian Renaissance items outside of Italy.

Royal Borough of Kensington and ChelseaThe Royal borough’s motto is Quam Bonum in Unum Habitare, which translates approximately as ‘What a good thing it is to dwell in unity’.

John Sheepshanks

In 1857 John Sheepshanks donated 233 paintings, mainly by contemporary British artists, and a similar number of drawings to the museum with the intention of forming a ‘A National Gallery of British Art’

Ron AradHe was Head of Design Products Department at the Royal College of Art from 1997 to 2009. Arad designed in 1994 the bookshelf Bookworm, which was still produced in 2011 by the Italian company Kartell. Arad’s work has been described as scary, considering its macho concrete and cut metal; tense sheets of tempered steel and guillotine edges. Arad’s works are often worked into distinctive biomorphic shapes and are created from his medium of choice, steel

TheatreThe V&A Theatre & Performance galleries, formerly the Theatre Museum, opened in March 2009. They hold the UK’s national collection of material about live performance in the UK since Shakespeare’s day, covering drama, dance, musical theatre, circus, music hall, rock and pop, and other forms of live entertainment. Types of items displayed include costumes, set models, prompt books, and posters.

Edwin LutyensA British architect known for imaginatively adapting traditional architectural styles to the requirements of his era.He has been referred to as “the greatest British architect” and is known best for having an instrumental role in designing and building a section of the metropolis of Delhi, known as New Delhi, which would later on serve as the seat of the Government of India. In recognition of his contribution, New Delhi is also known as “Lutyens’ Delhi”. In collaboration with Herbert Baker, he was also the main architect of several monuments in New Delhi such as the India Gate; he also designed the Viceroy’s House now known as the Rashtrapati Bhavan.

Antonio StradivariStradivari is generally considered the most significant and greatest artisan in this field. The Latinized form of his surname, Stradivarius, as well as the colloquial, “Strad”, is often used to refer to his instruments. It is estimated that he made 1,000 to 1,100 instruments and that around 650 of these instruments survive including 450[1] to 512 violins.

Chauncy Hare TownshendTownshend left his library to the Wisbech and Fenland Museum; his bequest to the South Kensington Museum comprised 186 oil paintings and 177 watercolour drawings, 832 volumes, 390 drawings, 1,815 prints, and gems, precious stones, cameos and intaglios.

Hardy AmiesHardy Amies was also one of the founders of ready-to-wear clothing for men. In 1961, he made fashion history by staging the first men’s ready-to-wear catwalk shows, at the Ritz Hotel in London. The strength of Hardy Amies’ style continues to grow, with Garlant’s refurbishment of 14 Savile Row, the creation of the new Eau de Parfum for women and the development of the latest couture, bespoke and ready-to-wear collections for men and women. Work has also begun again on designs for home furnishings.
