3408C DITA Engine. The 3408C engineis a field proven engine that deliversexcellent reliability and durability inmany applications.

High Torque Rise. The 18 liter enginedelivers a 44% torque rise, providingexcellent lugging capacity to moveheavier loads more efficiently.

Simplicity. The mechanically controlledengine provides ease of diagnostics inremote areas where technologicallyadvanced diagnostic tools may notbe available.

High Tensile Strength Block. The 3408Cblock is cast from high-tensile-strengthgray iron. The one piece casting isstabilized to maintain internal dimensionsunder all operating conditions.

Four Valve Cylinder Heads. The engineuses two intake and two exhaust valveswith hardened valve faces that aredesigned to be reground. Rotators turnthe valves about three degrees each liftto distribute wear and maintain heattransfer. Valve stems are made fromhardened, chrome plated steel to provideexcellent wear and heat resistance.

Cooling. An internal top-deck coolingshelf increases coolant flow to the topof the cylinders for long cylinder linerand piston life. The deep-skirted lowerstructure and heavy internal ribbingadd strength and rigidity to the block.

Carbon Steel Forged Crankshaft.The crankshaft is a carbon steel forging,fully heat-treated, super-finished anddynamically balanced.

Separate Circuit Aftercooler.AMOCS features a new Separate CircuitAftercooler and aftercooler water pump,along with a variable fan drive. It alsohas a ground level sight gauge for quickservice checks.

Two Pass Cooling System. Circulatescoolant from the sectioned bottom tankup through one side of the coolingelement and down through the otherside returning it to the bottom tank.

Modular Design. The cooling elementsare individual core modules that areconnected to a sectioned bottom tank.There is no top tank to remove.

• With 9 steel fins per inch, a lowerfin density reduces plugging.

• Brass tube construction within eachcore for improved reliability.

Serviceability. Servicing of theAMOCS can be performed withouttilting the radiator guard.

• No need to remove or replace a majorcomponent as on a single-coreradiator.

• Each core module can be replacedindividually (without removing theentire radiator), saving considerablecost and repair time.

Protection From Leaks. To reduce thepotential for coolant leaks, brass tubesare welded to a large, thick header,improving strength of the tube-to-

header joint. In conditions whereabrasive materials can be airborne,the attachment sand blast grid shouldbe used to prevent core damage.

Transmission. The proven Caterpillarplanetary power shift transmissionoperates with three speeds forward andthree speeds reverse. With this design,many gears share the load as it getstransferred to the differential. In contrast,with a countershaft transmission, justone gear carries the load.

Single Lever Control. One lever controlsboth machine speed and direction, easingoperator fatigue in demanding short runapplications.

Bevel Gear Design. Helical and spiralbevel transfer gears reduce operator andspectator sound levels by design as wellas location, being placed within the rearcase of the machine.

Oil Cooled Clutch Packs. The transmissionfeatures large oil-cooled clutch packsthat efficiently absorb the energy ofdirectional shifts for smooth machineperformance and excellent operatorcomfort. Proprietary F37 clutch materialextends clutch life, especially inapplications where extensive maneuveringis used to maintain peak machineproductivity. This material also minimizestransmission oil contamination comparedto materials used in other manufacturers’transmissions.

Separate Transmission Oil Reservoir.The transmission oil sump is separatefrom both final drive reservoirs,controlling cross contamination inthe event of a failure of either system.This allows the use of modularcomponents to maximize uptimeover the life of the tractor.

Clutch/Brake Steering. With clutch/brakesteering, hand levers combine steeringclutch disengagement and braking foreach track.

Serviceability. In terms of serviceability,the planetary transmission providessignificant advantages. The modulardesign simplifies removal andinstallation. Since the bevel gearsand pinions are manufactured to sucha high degree of accuracy, they do notneed to be lapped and mated into sets,reducing repair costs.

Torque Divider Performance.An improved single-stage torqueconverter sends 75% of engine torquethrough a converter and 25% througha direct drive shaft for greaterdriveline efficiency and higher torquemultiplication. The torque converterprovides improved efficiency and abroader range of performance in secondgear dozing and scraper pushloading.

Operating Efficiency and DrivelineReliability. The torque converter shieldsthe driveline from sudden torque shocksand vibration.

Freewheel Stator. Improves torquedivider efficiency. During machineoperation under low drawbar loads,the stator is permitted to rotate toachieve peak efficiency. The resultis a reduction in heat and an increasein fuel efficiency.

Elevated Final Drives. Isolates finaldrives from ground and implementinduced impact loads for extendedpower train life.

Additional Feedback. A minor, butimportant, by-product of the torquedivider is its tendency to increaseengine lug all the way to converterstall. This gives the operator additionalfeedback concerning tractor speedand drawbar pull.

Monitoring System. Provides theoperator instant feedback on thecondition of operating systems andrecords such performance data ashigh/low gauge readings to helpdiagnose problems and manageundercarriage. Has gauges that monitorthe temperature of the engine coolant,hydraulic oil and power train oil, plusthe fuel level. Possess alert indicatorsthat monitor engine oil pressure, inletmanifold temperature, coolant flow,electrical system, transmission oil filter,air filter service indicator and enginefault warning light. Also has a digitaland gauge type tachometer.

Comfortable Operation. An isolation-mounted cab reduces noise andvibration. The cab is pre-wired fora 12-volt or 24-volt radio mountrecessed in the headliner.

Cat Comfort Series Seat. The Cat ComfortSeries Seat is fully adjustable anddesigned for comfort and support.The seat and back cushions are thickerand designed to reduce pressure on thelower back and thighs while allowingunrestricted arm and leg movement.

Clutch/Brake Arrangement.The clutch/brake steering hand leverscombine steering clutch disengagementand braking for each track. Directionand speed are controlled by a singletransmission control.

Clear Full-Circle View. A tapered hoodand “notched” fuel tank give the operatora clear line of sight to the front and rearwork areas. The low rear window letsthe operator see the ripper tip. The largesingle-pane door windows allow theoperator to see close-in to each sidewithout leaning.

Rocker Switch. A rocker switch anddecelerator pedal control engine speed.High or low idle is delivered with atouch of the finger.

Implement Control Lever Restraints.When engaged, implement control leverrestraints prevent inadvertent movementof the control lever. These restraintsaccept standard Caterpillar padlocks.

Suspended Undercarriage Design.Absorbs impact loads to reduce the shockloads transferred to the undercarriageby up to 50% in uneven terrain.

Bogie Suspension. Conforms moreclosely to the ground to provide moreground contact, especially in hard,uneven terrain. Higher traction meansless slippage, better balance, and asmoother ride.

Rollers and Idlers. Feature symmetricDuo-Cone seals. Idler caps have anadditional third bolt in an abutment-style cap.

Idler Guards (Optional).Increase undercarriage life.

Roller Frames. Optimized track rollerframe alignment and increased trackroller frame adjustment length formore wear material available for use,extending link and roller wear life.

Elevated Sprocket. Transfers implementshock loads to the mainframe andallows the sprockets, final drives,axles and steering components toperform without absorbing excessivepunishment. This allows Cat tractorsto work harder and last longer thancompetitors’ machines. The sprocketsegment design increases the life ofboth the segment and track bushing.

Traction. The elevated sprocket allowsmore track to the rear of the rollerframe, increasing traction and flotationand counteracting front-end rise duringheavy dozing and drawbar applications.With more track on the ground, the D9Rdelivers exceptional balance, stability,and traction for excellent dozerpenetration and productive ripping.

Positive Pin Retention (PPR) Sealedand Lubricated Track. Designed forhigh-impact and high load applications.The PPR exclusive Caterpillar designlocks the link to the pin.

Sealed and Lubricated Track.Permanently coats the track pin witha sealed-in lubricant, minimizingmetal-to-metal contact.

• Virtually eliminates internal pinand bushing wear.

• Lubricant is held in a reservoirin the track pin.

Other Features.

• Tubular roller frames, to resistbending and twisting, with addedreinforcement where operating loadsare the highest.
