20 TEJB9661 Cat D7R Track-Type Tractors January 2012
Drive Train
Differential Steering System. A planetary differential turns the machine by speeding upone track and slowing the other, while maintaining full power to both. The differential steering control will be mechanically controlled. This allows the tractor to be more powerful while turning and spreading loads on job sites.
Differential steering provides power to both track sides and a constant center line speed during a turn. A conventional clutch/brake machine interrupts power to the machine during a turn and slows overall center line speed.
The system consists of three planetary gear sets.
Two planetary gear sets (steering and drive) make up the dual differential, which performs the traditional drive function (forward or reverse). Unlike competitive machines, the differential also performs a steering function with input from the bi-directional, fi xed displacement steeringmotor.
A third planetary gear set, the equalizing planetary, resides inside the transmission case. It is connected to the dual differential, providing a maximum speed difference between the right and left fi nal drives during a turn.
Thick, Large Diameter Plates and Clutch Disks. Thick, large diameter plates and disks provide higher torque capacity and increased service life.
Brake Housing. Brake housing features cast rib design for more durability.
Cooling Oil Valve. Cooling oil valves control oil fl ow to improve brake heat dissipation, extending brake life.
Tapered Roller Bearings. Tapered roller bearing design provides increased service life.
Double Reduction Planetary Final Drive. Caterpillar uses double reduction planetary fi nal drives in the D7R. The fi nal drives are designed with 3 planetary gears to spread high torque loads out evenly for long fi nal drive life.
Seals. Splash lubrication and Duo-Cone seals extend service life.
21TEJB9661 Cat D7R Track-Type TractorsJanuary 2012
Elevated Final Drive. Since its ground-breaking introduction in 1978 this work proven design offers a variety of benefi ts such as higher production, excellent ride and balance, and longer component life. Ground and implement shock loads are transferred to the mainframe to protect fi nal drives, axles and steering components from harsh impacts and provide smoother ride.
The elevated sprocket design gives the operator excellent sight lines to the blade, sides and back of the machine. However, machine center of gravity remains low, offering excellent stability, balance and traction.
Modular undercarriage components simplify service, and modular power train components make it quick to remove and repair the transmission, fi nal drives, differential orbrakesfor reduced downtime.
Heavy Duty Undercarriage. The non-suspended heavy duty undercarriage is well suited to aggressive applications like forestry, side-slopes, or working in rocky or uneven terrain. Components are designed for extended wear life in abrasive conditions and high impact applications. Specifi cally engineered to match the requirements of medium size machines with an elevated sprocket operating in demanding work environments, heavy duty track features stronger links, pins and bushings that signifi cantly offset the effects of high-impact loads and stresses to extend system wear life. This is offered as the standard track link offering onthe D7R Track-Type Tractor.
Undercarriage

Undercarriage
Sealed and Lubricated Track. The heavy-duty, sealed and lubricated track is designed for superior track life. A wide bushing strap aids retention and provides resistance to bore stretching and cracking. The design offers excellent seal-ability and link rail wear life. Robust rail material promotes link and roller system wear life.
Since introducing Sealed and Lubricated (S&L) track in 1974, Caterpillar has consistently enhanced its design to meet the specifi c needs of your applications. Each track component has undergone and continues to undergo stringent improvement process and as a result, S&L track offers major advantages, all of which add up to longer wear life and reduced Owning & Operating Costs:
Sophisticated heat-treat processes ensure track links have high core hardness, helping to hold the track section together and preventing leaks caused by links walking off the pin.
Cross-drilled pins provide an oil passage between the pin and the bushing. Carefully machined oil reservoirs ensure proper oil distribution.
Polished bushing ends prevent accelerated seal lip wear. Stepped bushings, which are thicker in the middle, provide more external wear material.
Rigid seal, which consists of a fl exible load ring, rigid seal ring and thrust ring, provides better sealability in all underfoot conditions, reducing the effects of impact on track joints that can cause premature seal failure.

Shoe selection is to maintain the proper fl otation while using the narrowest shoe possible. There are several sizes in both moderate and extreme service available. In many cases the extreme service shoe should be considered to allow shoe life to better match the expected lifeof the undercarriage.
Roller Frames. Roller frames are tubular, to resist bending and twisting, with added reinforcement where operating loads are thehighest.
Roller frames attach to tractor by a pivot shaft and pinned equalizer bar.
The recoil system is completely sealed and lubricated.
Hydraulic Track Adjuster. Adjusting the trackon the D7R is done hydraulically by removing a plate on the top of the roller frames. Adding or removing grease adjusts the track for optimum operation.
Recoil System. The recoil system on the D7Ris superior because it is protected from the elements and maintained in a sealed, oil-fi lled cavity for years of reliable service. Most manufacturers use a non-lubricated system that is vulnerable to the outside elements and may be costly to repair or replace if it rusts solid or packs withdebris.
Large Pivot Shaft. Pivot shaft and pinned equalizer bar oscillation system features:
Pivot shaft transmits ground impact loads directly to main frame.
Pinned equalizer bar keeps track roller frame in proper alignment.
System provides smooth machine underside.
Guiding Guards. The track guiding/guard attachment provides maximum protection to track pin bosses, roller fl anges and end guiding guards in applications with side slopes exceeding 2:1 or objects greater than 76 mm (3 in) in size. Full length track roller guiding guards and high fl ange rollers are included in this attachment.
Steel Sprocket Segments. The D7R sprocket segment material is metallurgically optimized to be fracture resistant. This allows the sprocket to live longer and better match abushing turn.
Clamp Master Link
Master Link. A clamp style master link is provided with Heavy Duty Sealed & Lubricated track groups.
Track Rollers. All track rollers offered on the D7R are lifetime lubricated and offersustainability benefi ts in that internal components can be re-used and outer shell canbe replaced or rebuilt.

Carrier Roller Carrier Roller Ready
Carrier Roller. To achieve total balanced wear, carrier rollers with enhanced wear life are usedon the LGP undercarriage arrangement. An optional dealer installed attachment is available for the STD and XR undercarriage arrangements. Both the STD and XR track roller frames are carrier roller ready from thefactory for ease of fi eld retrofi t when the application requires or fi tted at the dealer for initial sale. Carrier roller kits for the STD and XR are available through parts distributions channel and maximizes dealer and Distribution Center inventory to fi t when the application requires. Carrier rollers are lifetime lubricated adding to lower operating costs.
Idler Idler Rebuild
Idlers. Cat idlers are lifetime lubricated and internal components can be reused for programs that involve rebuilding of the idlers and tread that provides outstanding sustainability benefi ts and lower operating costs.
Track Guiding. Good track guiding is accomplished by the proper combination of primary and secondary guiding. Primaryguiding occurs between moving undercarriage components.
Guiding between the track and track rollerfl anges
Guiding between track and the idler centerfl anges
Guiding between track and sprockets
Secondary guiding occurs between the track and the fi xed track guide wear surfaces mounted to the track frame.
Guiding between track and track frame end track guiding guards
Guiding between track and (bolt-on) short track frame guiding guards. These guides are best suited when operating in side slopes up to 2:1.
Guiding between track and (bolt-on) fulllength track roller guiding guards. These guides are best suited when operating in side slopes that exceed 2:1.
Both forms of guiding are important, and work together to keep the track aligned and correctly guided. Primary guiding predominately keeps the track in place in low to moderate guiding conditions. Both primary and secondary guiding work together to keep track in place inmoderate to high guiding conditions.
For more information on track guiding refer tothe latest Undercarriage Selection Guide.

Structure
Frame and Castings. The D7R frame is built to absorb high impact shock loads and twisting forces. The frame has a reinforced saddle and a welded front cross-member. Both add strength to the frame to better handle lateral and twisting forces. Steel castings augment thestrength of the main case.
The D7R frame is designed for multiple lives by rebuilding many of the components. Thisstrong sustainability element reduces waste and the use of natural resources. It also drives lifetime costs down and extends the profi tability cycle of the machine over the whole life ownership.
Tag Link Mounting Blade to Mainframe
Tag-Link. The tag-link blade mounting brings the blade closer to the machine for excellent maneuverability, machine balance and blade penetration. The tag-link design provides solid lateral stability and better cylinder positions for constant pryout independent of blade height. The tag-link also eliminates the need for diagonal bracing because it transfers side loads to the mainframe instead of the dozer push-arms.
Structure. Cat Track-Type Tractors set the industry standard for durability. The D7R is built and engineered to provide the solid support needed for maximum productivity and service life in the most demanding work.
27TEJB9661 Cat D7R Track-Type TractorsJanuary 2012
Pivot Shaft
Pivot Shaft and Equalizer Bar. The pivot shaft runs through the mainframe and connects to the roller frames for independent oscillation. The full-length pivot shaft distributes impact loads throughout the case, reducing bending stresses on the case. This design eliminates alignment problems and the need for diagonal braces on the roller frames. Cat track-type tractors set the industry standard for mainframe durability. For a more comfortable ride, resilient pads cushion the oscillating equalizer bar andframe in uneven underfoot conditions. Thepinned equalizer bar gives the roller frames the ability to oscillate up or down to better match ground contours while providing maximum traction and operator comfort. Equalizer bar end pins are oil fi lled with limited slip seals forlonger life and reduced repair costs.
Pivot shaft and pinned equalizer bar oscillation system have following features:
Pivot shaft transmits ground impact loads directly to main frame.
Protects power train components.
Pinned equalizer bar keeps track roller frame in proper alignment.
System provides smooth machine underside
Resilient pads cushion in uneven underfoot conditions.

Parts Pricing. The price of parts can impact the overall owning and operating cost of any piece of equipment. These costs are often overlooked when a purchase is being considered; however, at several points in the machines life cycle, maintenance or repair parts will be required. Like many things at Caterpillar, parts pricing is all about maximizing the bottom line of the end-user. As a result, Cat parts are priced, on average, to be competitively lower than those of the competition in the D7R size class.
Resale Value. How much will my machine be worth in three years? Five years? Ten years? At Caterpillar, weve thoroughly analyzed the market over time to provide our customers the best possible perspective.
History has proven, and continues to show, that Cat machines bring a much higher price than the competition, when resold at an auction or equipment sale. This translates into all Cat equipment owners getting a greater return on their investment than if they had purchased competitive offerings.
Global information has shown that CatTrack-Type Tractors in the 157 kW to 194kW (210hp to 260 hp) size class bring over 50percent higher price when between three and fi ve years old. That number grows to more than one-and-a-half times when the machine is between fi ve and 10 years old.
The design philosophy behind the D7R is a machine that is designed to be rebuilt, and to bring long term profi t benefi ts in ownership cash fl ow to customer operations during use, and at eventual machinedisposal.
