DIVISION RECAP!

UPCOMING EVENTS!

MEMBER OF THE MONTH!

Hello, Pirate Penguins! The last weeks of summer are quickly approaching, I would like reiterate our division goals: 10,000 hours, $200 for PTP, 750 members. We have obtained 1,047.6 hours so far! We are off to a excellent start, each club should strive for 200 hours each month! This is absolutely achievable. Create more service events and more members attend the service events! Utilize the community you live in. Elementary schools, businesses, community centers, shelters, etc. Out of 28 Pirate Penguins (and some with pie on their face) at the July DCM, we raised $105 for PTP! I am so proud of you all. This goes to show that having a small number can still have a tidal WAVE. A couple of fundraisers are coming up so make sure your club participates in them. Lastly 750 members is completely do-able, if each club can gain more than 11 members than the previous year (2011-2012) we can make division history. Remember to attend the the August DCM (info provided in newsletter) and our Car Wash for PTP (also provided in the newsletter). I wish you all good luck in the new school year. Stay tuned via Twitter, Facebook group, email, phone! Plenty of more icebergs to come! Keep WADDLING!

Thanks for all that you do,

C.A.M.S. Olivia Solis This month the weather has gotten ex-tremely hot, which was all the more reason for CAMS Key Club to volunteer at wet projects such as the Youth Garden and Long Beach Clean-Up! Recently on August 4th, our club has been work-ing with a local doctor to start up a Community Youth Garden at Stephen M. White Middle School in Carson. Dr. Clarence Monteclaro asked our club to assist in weeding the large plots, turning the soil, and planting new seeds. Every Saturday from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM, Key Clubbers and other members of the community come out and plant, in hopes of hav-ing a flourishing garden full of vegetables, fruit, and flowers. On Saturday, August 11th, Clean LB had their 2 Year Beach Clean-Up Party where after picking up trash, all volunteers could enjoy the fun activities and refreshments. It was definitely a great project in the sun. This week, CAMS Parent Teacher Student Organization invited our Key Club to assist in the Freshman Orientation by greeting newcomers and help in selling CAMS wear. Clubbers love to give school tips to Freshmen and inform them all about the fun of being in Key Club. CAMS Key Club will begin to have weekly meetings on Friday, August 24th. We all can't wait for recruiting new members! On Thursday, August 17th, our club will be attending a informational meeting about the Gardena Jazz Festival on August 26th. Many members are excited to participate in helping out, as well as getting a free t-shirt!

Gardena Samar Al-Haqab On July 18th, 2012 Gardena Key Club as-sisted Nakaoka Center with a tournament for the disabled. Although the center called and scheduled the event last minute, many mem-

bers still pulled through and volunteered when Nakaoka needed us most. At this event the members helped keep scores for the tournament games. They also cooked food, served ice cream, helped take pictures during the award ceremony, and assisted in clean-up afterwards. Unfortunately I was not able to go but I asked our Vice President, Syreen Ponferra-da, how the event went and she said “It was a hot day but we all enjoyed helping the disabled and it was a really success-ful event.” That’s the spirit I look forward to in Key Club and that’s the spirit I hope we’ll always have for service events.

LawndaleRyan Lieu For the month of August, Lawndale KC had a bake sale. We were able to raise $25 from selling cookies, brownies, juice, and water. It was a success considering the price of each item and how much we made in total. We are planning to have another car wash, but some time later in the future before winter.

LeuzingerLeanna Tran On July 21st, our club participated in the “Good Neighbor Day Hawthorne’s Hometown Fair” celebrating Haw-thorne’s 90th birthday. The event took place at Hawthorne City Hall from 9am-3pm. The event showcased Hawthorne’s Museum grand opening, a car show, a mini concert, and dif-ferent booths advertising their products or support for a cause. Our Kiwanis booth sold pancakes in the morning and hotdogs and hamburgers in the afternoon. Our volunteers helped set up tables, arrange condiments, clean, and made sure custom-ers were satisfied.

WestchesterErik Carrillo Our club has taken part in the ptp fundraiser at the DCM. During the course of this event I got pie thrown at my face in order to raise money by the people who want to throw a pie at someone had to pay for it. As much fun as it was to get pie thrown in your face I got a good review on the event by my club which they recommended that I begin something like that at the school

H.M.S.A.Elane Marroquin This month we have had a few online meetings with the other officers in order to have a plan for the upcoming year. We have a few charity events planned such as Operation Christmas Child and a few others under development. We have participated in the July DCM and helped fund raise with the pie tossing game. The members involved are myself, Emely Palomo, Jennifer Cama-cho, Stephanie Tran, and Carlos Ninapaytan. We are sure that the time of August- September will hold many events because all of our students will be together and clear about what is going on with Key Club.

members of the month

El Segundo The Member of the Month for August is Andrew Kim. Although he is going to college now, he has not stopped showing he cares. Andrew stayed with Key Club all four years of High School and attained officer positions. He was also a member who actually went to Key Club events. Throughout the summer he showed his support to the club he served by giving advice to the new officers from his experience over the years in order to make the club's next year a little easier. Andrew further shows his dedication to make the world a better place through his major of agricultural science. Even in college Andrew will continue to make efforts toward helping his community. Although El Segundo has lost an important member of its club, we wish him the best of luck in college and know he will to continue to support the Kiwanis Familiy.

Gardena Hello there Pirate Penguins! Summer break has ended and another year of school has started. It’s hot, but the member of the month’s passion for community service is even hotter! For the 2012 summer break, this member showed dedication like no other. She has attended 100% of the events during summer vacation and for the third month already, she has attained the status of being the member of the month three times in a row. It’s no other than..dun..dun..dun..Malia Wong! Not only is Malia showing a wonder-ful passion for key club, she is also encouraging others to attend the events. She has truly been a great role model to others and deserves a standing ovation for being the member of the month three times in a row. Thank you Malia and may your passion for Key Club continuously burn.

H.M.S.AFor continuously being involved in our club's events and always attending the monthly DCMs, Carlos Ninapaytan is being recognized as August's member of the month. Despite the fact that he is not an of-ficer, Carlos is one of our club's most dedicated and hardworking members. He's constantly looking for new volunteering opportunities for our members. This is just a little way to show Carlos that his help and his commitment have not gone unnoticed and are greatly appreciated.
