Operating PrincipleFaraday’s Laws of Induction form the basis for the electromagnetic flowmeters. It states that a voltage is induced in a conductor as it moves through a magnetic field. This principle is applied to a conductive fluid which flows through a magnetic field generated perpendicular to the flow direction (see Schematic). The voltage induced in the fluid is maesured at two electordes, installed diametrically opposed. This signal voltage UE is proportional to the magnetic induction B, the electrode spacing D and the average flow velocity v.Noting that the magnetic induction B and the electrode spacing D are constants, a proportionality exists between the signal voltage UE and the average flow velocity v. The equation for the volume flow shows that the signal voltage UE is linear and proportional to the volume flowrate. The induced signal voltage is processed in the converter into scaled, analog and digital signals.

The volume flowrate is a function of the flow velocity and the flowmeter size. The Flowrate Nomographs, Fig. 14 and Fig. 15 indicate the flowrate range for a specific flowmeter size and which flowmeter sizes are suitable for a specific flowrate.
Example:
Flowrate = 7 m3/h (Maximum value = range end value). Suitable are flowmeter sizes DN 20 to DN 65 [3/4” to 2/12”] for a flow velocity between 0.5 and 10 m/s.

Electromagnetic Flowmeter FSM4000D184S073U02
Specifications: Flowmeter Primary, Installation Requirements and GroundingUp- and Downstream Straight Sections
Flowmeter installation is the key to an accurata flow measurement system. As a rule of thump, generally 3 pipe diameters uystream and 2 pipe diameters downstream are sufficient. Other upstream obstructions however, such as double elbows out of plane, control valves and nonconcentric pipe reducers etc. may require longer lengths.
Grounding
Grounding the flowmeter primary is necesary not only for safety reasons but also to assure proper opration of the electromagnetic flowmeter. The grouding screws on the flowmeter primary, which correspond to VDE 0100, Part 540, are to be connected to earth potential. For measurement reasons this potential should be identical to the fluid potential if at all possible. In applications using plastic or insulating lined pipelines the ground connections are made utilizing grouding plates or grounding electrodes. If stray currents are present in the pipeline, grounding plates up and downstream of the flowmeter primary are recommended.
Electrode Axis
Neither electrode should be positioned at the highest pont in the pipeline in horizontal installations. Gas bubbles, which may be present in the fluid, could interrupt the electrical connection between the electrodes and the fluid. An ideal installation is shown in Fig. 16. Assure that the meter tube is always completely filled with fluid. Instrument designs with removable electrodes for cleaning are available upon request.
Installations in Larger Size Pipelines
The flowmeter can be installed in larger size pipelines without problems using reducer sections. The pressure drop when reducers are used can be determined from the Nomograph Fig. 17. The procedure for determining the pressure drop is as follows:1. Determine the diameter ratio d/D.2. Calculate the flow velocity as a function of the flowmeter size
and the flowrate:
v =
The flow velocity can also be determined from the Flowrate Nomographs, Fig. 14 and Fig. 15.
3. In Fig. 17 read the “Pressure drop” value, yaxis, at the intersection of the “Diameter Ratio”, xaxis, and the “Flow Velocity” curve.
d = EMF inside diameter D = Pipe inside diameter v = Flow velocity in m/s ∆p = Pressure drop in mbar

Installation Accessories
Fig. 29 Protection Plates/Grounding Plates
The loose grounding plates are installed between the flowmeter flange and the mating flange.
Available for sizes DN 3–DN 600 [1/10“–24“]. Mat. SS 1.4571[316Ti] other materials upon request .
Protection Flanges
Protection flanges protect the liner from abrasive fluids and are centered in the pipeline using a groove or spring. Protection flanges are available in 2 thicknesses and are mounted on the intrument. Added installation length for Series 1000 and DIN/ANSI flanges ≤ DN 80 [3“] L + 20 mm, from DN 100 [4“] L + 25 mm.
Gaskets for Protection Plates/Grounding Plates
Only one gasket at the mating flange is required for PTFE/PFA lined instruments installed with metal grounding plates. A gasket should be placed on either side of the grounding plate for hard/soft rubber lined instruments. Commercially available gaskets made of a material (rubber, lt, PTFE, etc) compatible with the fluid and the operating temperatures should be used.
Chemical Applicationd (Grounding)
For plastic pipelines or pipelines with insulating liners, protection/grounding plates made of conductive PTFE (patent applied for), replace the expensive special materials (Platinum, Tantalum etc.) presently used. Succesfully tested in numerous applications.
Wafer Design Accessories for Model SE21W
The following accessories are available as a function of the meter size and the pressure rating: Bolts, nuts, lockwasher, centering elements Gaskets are not included ion the accessories.
Any flow range whose 100 % value corresponds to a flow velocity between 0.5 m/s and 10 m/s can be selected.

Signal Cable
Max. cable length between flowmeter primary and converter is: 50 m for the standard design and versions with automatic zero return, from DN 10 [3/8”] and from 20 µS/cm. 200 m for designs with preamplifiers. A 10 m long signal cable is included with flowmeter. If a longer cable is required, see Footnote on Page 35, Ordering Information, Converter.
Magnet Coil Supply Cable
Is required for connecting the flowmeter primary to the converter. For EMCreasons the 2 wire cable is shielded. A 10 m long cable is included with flowmeter. If a longer cable is required, see Footnote on Page 35, Ordering Information, Converter.
Forward/Reverse Flow Metering
The flow direction is indicated in the display by direction arrows. It is also possible to transmit the flow direction information over the contact output.
Display
4line, lighted, graphic display. To improve the readability, the flow information can be displayed on two lines with larger characters. The individual flowrate and output values can be displayed. Nonswitching dotmatrix display with max. 4 x 16 characters. An clear text error diagnosis is displayed when the system monitor detects an error condition. The alarm condition can also be signaled over the alarm output.
Data Security
All data is stored in a FRAM (Ferroelectric Nonvolatile Random Access Memory) for a 10 year period without requiring power during a power outage or when the main supply power is turned off. Additional security is provided by a serial FRAM installed in the converter and on the external connection board in which the parameter settings and process information are stored. The data in the external FRAM can be uploaded into the converter. Thereby an easy converter exchange is possible without reconfiguration by simply uploading the stored data from the external FRAM into the new converter.
29
Electromagnetic Flowmeter FSM4000D184S073U02
Flow Totalization
The flow is totalized in engineering units. The pulse factor, pulses per unit, can be set between 0.001 and 1000. The totalizer values for the forward and reverse flow directions can be displayed simultaneously. Display selections are made in the submenu "Display".
Parameter Settings
Entries are made using menus displayed in a number of languages (German, English, French, Finnish, Swedish, Italian, Spanish and Dutch) using 3 keys in dialog with the display or by communication over a data link, using a PC, HARTProtocol or Profibus (in preparation).A Magnet Stick can be used for configuration without opening the front door. Position the Magnet Stick over the magnet symbols on the cover over the display.
Alarm Signals
The converter can incorporate a max/minalarm. The alarm limits can be set anywhere within the range of 0–105 % of the flow range end value. When the flowrate is outside of the alarm limits set, an error message is displayed in the upper line. It is also possible to transmit a signal over the contact output.
Upgrade
The converter with all its functions can also be used with older model electromagnetic flowmeters. The appropriate model number must be selected in the converter. It is also possible to use the converter with flowmeters Model 10D1422. A special converter version is required when updating an older model (see Ordering Information, Converter) and is applicable to the meter size range DN 3 to DN 1000 [1/10" to 40"] only in the low voltage design.
