The Palm Beach County Sheriff ’s Foundation (PBCSF) is pleased to announce the recipients of its 2016 Youth Scholarship Program. Ten Palm Beach County high school seniors, all of whom were nominated by a sworn employee of the Palm Beach County Sheriff ’s Office (PBSO), will receive
$2,000 scholarships for their freshman year of college. Each scholarship is renewable for up to 4 years of college or trade school. After 4 years, the PBCSF Youth Scholarship Program will be distributing $80,000 a year in scholarships.
The Sheriff ’s Foundation recently teamed with the Police Athletic League to send eight Glades-area high school students to a well-respected basketball camp in New Jersey run by former NBA players. This is a great experience for the students, since they are not only
coached in basketball, but also mentored about life in general. Most of the kids have never been on a plane or visited a big city. The first year we sent one boy, the second year we sent four boys, and this year we sent four boys and four girls.

Deputies from Lake Worth District took 19 at-risk stu-dents who completed a 12 week Breaking the Cycle of Gang Recruitment class on a field trip to LEGOLAND in Winter Haven. The students took part in a fun-filled day at the park with complimentary admission tickets from LEGOLAND. Most of these kids had never been to a theme park, and they truly enjoyed the experience and their souvenirs. The students have bonded with the deputies and have learned that there are many opportunities outside of gangs. None of this would be possible without the continued partnership with LEGOLAND and the Palm Beach County Sheriff ’s Foundation.
Thanks to a grant from the Sheriff ’s Foundation, PBSO now has a new dual-purpose K-9. He’s a 17-month-old Malinois/Shepherd mix named Ataj, and he will work patrol and explosives detection. If you would like to sponsor a K-9, please contact the Sheriff ’s Foundation.
Meet Bella, PBSO’s newest member of the Mounted Unit. She’s an 8 year old Percheron that was purchased by the Sheriff ’s Foundation. Please contact the Sheriff ’s Foundation if you would like to support the Mounted Unit.

Sheriff’s Foundation News
The recipient of the Sheriff ’s Foundation Above & Beyond Award for August is Deputy Yordan Perez. Deputy Perez responded to a residential burglary at a home in Lake Worth. In the course of his investi-gation, Deputy Perez found out that the victims just moved here from Colorado, and that their daughter Melissa is blind.
One of the items stolen from the home was Melissa’s laptop computer. The computer contained special software for the blind which gave Melissa the freedom to communicate with the outside world. Deputy Perez was so moved by Melissa’s situation that he went out the next day and bought a new laptop for Melissa out of his own pocket.
Melissa and her family were very touched by the gen-erosity shown to them by Deputy Perez, and they made a point of coming to the awards ceremony. Melissa brought a tear to everyone’s eye with her emo-tional remarks. Thanks to Deputy Perez’s compassion, a negative event was turned into a positive, and the impact will not soon be forgotten. Deputy Perez, the Sheriff ’s Foundation thanks you for going Above & Beyond!
The Sheriff ’s Foundation is pleased to announce its purchase of a Child ID Kit for the PBSO Volunteer Unit. This user-friendly, briefcase-size kit contains a laptop, camera, fingerprint reader and printer, and allows PBSO Volunteers to set up in virtually any location. The Volunteers enter all of the child’s vital info, such as age, height, weight, hair color, photo and fingerprints, and then give the parents a printout to keep in case of an emer-gency. This is a great, free service provided by PBSO Volunteers to give families some extra peace of mind.
PBSO and the PBCSF had a great day in Pahokee at Anquan Boldin’s Family Fun Day in April. The event took place at the Pahokee High School football stadium, which is named after its former star and current Detroit Lions wide receiver. Besides music, games and great food, hundreds of kids and adults alike were able to get up-close educational encounters with PBSO specialty units, including SWAT, Mounted and K-9. Thanks to Anquan for giving back to our community in such a big way. It’s no surprise he won the Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year Award.

It was a great day at 3 Whole Foods Markets (Wellington, Palm Beach Gardens and West Palm Beach) on 8/3/16. PBSO Volunteers issued hundreds of Child IDs, PBSO specialty units dem-onstrated their skills, PBSO Explorers and Shop With a Cop personnel passed out brochures, and Sheriff ’s Foundation board members interacted with customers. Thanks to all the friendly shoppers, and to Whole Foods for hosting us and donating 5% of the day’s sales to the Sheriff ’s Foundation!
In addition, the Sheriff ’s Foundation is also the beneficiary of the Whole Foods Donate Your Dime program from July through September, 2016. When customers bring in their own bags, they get a 10 cent credit per bag. Cashiers ask those customers if they would like to donate those credits to the local charity of the quarter, and most of the customers say yes. So this will provide even more funds to help us make a positive impact in the community!
