FFA ATTENDS NATIONAL FFA CONVENTION
The Markesan FFA chapter selected seven individuals to
attend the 87th annual National FFA Convention held in
Louisville, Kentucky. This year’s convention took place
Wednesday, October 29 thru Saturday, November 1. At this
convention, the seven members, Mercedes Schulz, Nayla
Schmeckpeper, Brittanie Fox, Buddy Barker, Levi Hagen,
Adam Oemig, and Blake Docter represented the Markesan
FFA.
Each member had the opportunity to explore future
agricultural career opportunities and attend different sessions
with inspirational keynote speakers. The group also visited
Louisville businesses and landmarks like the Louisville Slugger
factory and Churchill Downs. FFA members went to see a
country music concert and the World’s Toughest Rodeo. They
also visited and bonded with FFA members from other states,
dressed in their blue corduroy jackets, all the while appreciating
American agriculture and National FFA. There were about 60,000
FFA members and guests who attended this convention. This trip
was enjoyed by everyone.
THE DARK SIDE OF DIGITAL TECHNOLOGY: INTERNET, CELL PHONE AND SOCIAL MEDIA
BY: Special Agent Eric Szatkowski
Markesan Middle School Gym, Wednesday, January 14, 2015 at 6:00 p.m.
All parents with children that have computers, cell phones, or tablets need to attend this presentation!
While digital technology offers a world of communication, education, and entertainment options for our
youth, it also has a dark and dangerous side we must be aware of. This fast-paced presentation takes an in-
depth look into the latest trends in digital exploitation of children. Eric uses real-life case examples and gives
unabashed practical advice for anyone interested in the safety and well-being of our children while online or
using their cell/smart phones. Eric pulls-no-punches as he combines his investigative expertise with his own
personal experiences as a husband and father who protected his own two children as they grew up with digital
technology.
Attendees will learn techniques used by predators, the types of kids who are most vulnerable, and the link
between the growing victimization of children and the sexualized culture. Topics include the latest on
potential dangers of social networking sites like Facebook, as well as disturbing trends of sexting, cyber
bullying, and webcam exploitation. Eric also discusses the risks of popular music and video file sharing
programs, smart phones apps like Snap Chat, geo-tagging, and online gaming.
Eric also provides a live, eye-opening demonstration of some troubling sites our kids can be exposed to
online or on their phones.
The audience will be challenged to be good parents instead of “best friends” to their children. Eric also
explains how filters and monitoring software should be used to support their primary mission of raising kids in
a safe, caring, AND high-tech environment.
(Due to the nature of this material, and live Internet demonstrations, it is for ADULTS only.)
