Life’s Victories is a special series produced by the Advertising Department of the Orlando Sentinel. Orlando Sentinel’s Life’s Victories is Proudly Sponsored By: EDWARD J. GROSS, MD My name is Desiree Horn, age 52. I am a mother of 3 with two sons ages 25 and 15 and one daughter age 20. This is my story. Just when you think you have done everything in life you wanted to do the reality confirms what is most important to you when you are diagnosed with a life threatening disease. I lost my right breast to breast cancer 12 years ago on my 40th birthday. I went for a routine mammogram to find out I had DCIS. It was only 3 months later that a lump under my right arm was discovered, onto another biopsy to find out that my breast cancer had reoccurred and was stage 4. My dad sent me to an oncology group at St. Thomas Hospital in Nashville, Tennessee where I began chemotherapy for 6 months which meant I flew to Nashville every 21 days. Once the chemotherapy was completed I began 38 rounds of radiation . I had been cancer free for 2 years when I discovered a knot in my lower neck, a biopsy again confirmed breast cancer. Thanks to a wonderful team of doctors, family and friends and their love and support I have been cancer free for 7 years. I truly believe God never gives us more burdens than we can handle. My children and I are angels at Give Kids The World - one of my favorite things to do, helping others with life threatening diseases. Having a positive attitude and remembering what cheer really means - a state of heart and mind, a source of joy or happiness, a comfort - it is the key to helping fight the fight. Give hope and LIVE STRONG.
