We are developing lifelong learners. DISK is an authorized practitioner of the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Program (IBPYP). This supports our mission and SLOs: achieve academically, communicate effectively, collaborate effectively, and become socially conscious and caring individuals.Children in the Elementary School are challenged to aspire to these values through explorations in the IBPYP. We reflect often and celebrate our mission in monthly assemblies.
Culminating with the IB diploma program in grades 11 and 12, our high school program is academically demanding. Our purpose is to prepare students for life at quality institutions of higher education.Through a carefully designed curriculum, our students acquire not only in-depth knowledge of rigorous subjects but also learn how to learn, how to ask challenging questions, and how to behave in various academic settings. Students acquire skills that allow them to become useful members of their community.
INTERNATIONAL MINDEDNESS THROUGH INQUIRYWe endeavor to foster global awareness as well as inspire stewardship within our communities and the natural world. To this end we provide a foundation for each student to become a lifelong learner. We promote the development of the whole child through the IB Learner Profile. Our Program of Inquiry creates authentic opportunities for academic growth utilizing constructivist approaches to learning.Implementing these ideals in a caring environment will result in courageous, creative, literate, thoughtful, and active members of society.
FACT SHEET
“Completing the two-year IBDP exam program, you can acquire the internationally recognized university entrance qualification and you can enroll in universities around the world. I think that it was good for my child to take the DP program as it is accepted at universities worldwide.” (Diploma Parent)
“After attending a year at DISK, the outcome has far exceeded my already high expectations. Over the course of the year, I witnessed my son blossoming due to his interaction with so many warm and wonderful people. He remains enthusiastic, eager and cheerful about school. I also find the parents network very supportive, and enjoy participating in the various seasonal events throughout the year.” (Elementary Parent)
“The Middle School program builds students for the DP course. They learn processes to think by themselves, the ability to explore and present, and the personality of an international person. DISK's enthusiastic teachers and exciting lessons bring out the skills and curiosity of the children, so children enjoy going to school every day. The caring environment ensures DISK is a great place to learn, a place where it is easy to concentrate. I am convinced that my children are acquiring an education that will be useful for the future global society we see today.” (Middle School Parent)
The Learner Profile is our mission and vision translated into a set of learning outcomes. The attributes of the profile express the values inherent in international education. These values infuse all the essential elements of our IB Program. The Learner Profile provides a set of ideals that can inspire and focus the work of all members of our learning community.
THE 5 ESSENTIAL ELEMENTS OF OUR CURRICULUM
THE 6 TRANSDISCIPLINARY THEMES
THE BALANCE OF CONCEPTS AND SKILLS
Capabilities that students need to demonstrate to succeed in a changing, challenging world.
Every grade level creates 6 units of inquiry, one to correspond with each given theme. Each unit is driven by a central idea, lines of inquiry, and key concepts regarding a particular theme.
Theme: Who we areCentral Idea: Our choices affect our health and well-beingAn Inquiry into: Balanced lifestyles, the causes, and effects of our choicesKey Concepts: causation, responsibility, perspective, and reflection
Thinking skillsSocial skills
Research skillsCommunication skills
Self-management skills
Within the program, students acquire and practice valuable skills for the classroom and life-long learning.
THE IB LEARNER PROFILE
Knowledge
Action Concepts
Attitudes Skills
A set of 8 concepts is utilized in order to shape a unit of inquiry. Not all concepts are used every time. Over the course of the year all 8 are addressed.
CONCEPTS

ATTITUDES
Demonstrations of applied learning through responsible behavior and thoughtful actions. These are synthesized manifestations of the other four essential elements.
ACTION

Balanced
“I feel that the essence of education is learned flexibly. It is not just about acquiring knowledge but also growing as a person. DISK has high-quality teachers that support that education. I am convinced that learning here will improve life.” (Parent)
Significant, and relevant, content that we wish our students to explore and know about. Takes into consideration their own prior experiences and understandings.
KNOWLEDGE
Powerful ideas that have relevance within subject areas, but also transcend them. Students must explore these ideas in a gradually increased sophistication of understanding in order to construct in-depth connections.
DISK’s school-wide online newsletter, The Diamondback Press.Targeted emails go out to parents regularly.
All school events are also posted on the school calendar.Teachers email parents to let them know about items that are student or class-specific.
Open House is a “welcome to the classroom” evening held once at the start of the school year. The school website, www.diskyoto.com, is a wonderful resource for all parents.
AFTER SCHOOL ACTIVITIESDISK offers numerous activities that provide new experiences in academics, sports, and special interests.
TRANSPORTATIONDISK offers bus service from both Tomigaoka Station and Shin-Hosono Station.
DRESS CODEThere is no school uniform. Students should wear comfortable, appropriate clothes.
CLASS SIZEWe enjoy small class sizes.
CORE VALUESAt DISK, we are developing lifelong learners. This effort is supported by the Schoolwide Learning Outcomes (SLO). Children are challenged to aspire to achieve these outcomes – we reflect upon them often and they are celebrated in school.
PARENT-NETWORKParents sponsor and manage fundraisers and community-building events. It also offers a quick way to make new friends and learn about the many cultures represented here. We encourage parents to get involved.
COMMUNICATIONS
FORM - What is it? FUNCTION - How does it work?
CAUSATION - Why does it work that way?CONNECTION - How does it affect other things?
CHANGE - How has it changed over time? PERSPECTIVE - What are the different points of view?
RESPONSIBILITY - How can we take action?REFLECTION - How do we know what we've learned?
These are the years of progress, not perfection.Students are rapidly developing mentally, physically, and emotionally. Our primary goal is to guide them through these changes while focusing them on the academic application, preparing them with a sound foundation as they move into the High School and the IB Diploma Program.DISK implements a similar curriculum to that of the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Program.Students are required to receive instruction in arts, language acquisition, language and literature, individuals and societies, sciences, mathematics, as well as physical and health education.
