Cygnet Sentinel September 2018 Volume XLVI No. 12 COMMODORE’S COMMENTS for September JIYC AUXILIARY Almost a year ago, I was staring at a blank page, stuck for the words that would be clever and entertaining in my first edition of the President’s Notes. I remember thinking, oh no, I have eleven more to go! That thought left a slightly sick feeling in my gut, so I gave myself a brief pep talk, put words to the paper and carried on. Now this is my last edition of the President’s Notes, and somehow, I am where I was eleven months ago. I have to say the ensuing Notes got easier because I had a lot of subject matter – current events, thoughts on how great the club is, and those never-ending reminders to come join the fun here with family and friends. This last one is hard because I have only one shot to say how much this term has meant to me, and I don’t want to forget anything or anyone. So… my first thought is how Glenn and I hit it off immediately. We’ve shared the ups and downs of the year, and I’ve enjoyed socializing with him and his better half, Penny, and appreciated his encouraging talks. Speaking of encouragement, the board members and committee chairs have been with me every step of the way. We have had a fun and productive year, and there was never an event or activity that went unsupported by this great group. Every time I got nervous or worried, I was put at ease by these sincere and caring women. That plus the invaluable help from Ron has made this term a lot easier and a lot more enjoyable than I thought it would be. Ron is a “can do” guy always willing to lend a hand, and for someone who knew very little of the ropes (me), he was a lifesaver on many occasions. None of this would have mattered without the general membership who attended meetings, events, and social activities. The ladies of the Auxiliary were selfless in giving us whatever support we needed by volunteering their time and energy to our busy calendar. And thank you, George, for being an understanding and supportive husband. It’s not easy being the First Man… Now the easy part – the recap! The Auxiliary’s last big event– the End of Summer party - was a sold-out success. We definitely ended this summer with a bang and danced the night away! Thanks go to Kathleen Parks, the master planner; Josh Clayman, our Hawaiian Chef; and the volunteers who helped man the gate, decorate, serve food, and clean up. And thanks to you for all those ticket sales! In closing, I wish our new President, Tia Stanley, the same great year and support that I enjoyed. Tia is a go-getter, and I have no doubt she will flourish in this office. We will be there for her as we have always been for our Auxiliary. Thank you, thank you, thank you for a wonderful year I will always remember fondly. I’ll get to all that, but in August 2018 we were reminded just how fragile life can be. Our hearts go out to the family and friends of our sailing instructor Joey Chomyn who passed away in a boating accident. The club responded in a big way helping immediately after the accident, and then by hosting a reception following Joey’s funeral. A special thanks to Ryan Hamm, Julie Walters, Dan and Liisa Machowski, and Kurt Oberle for organizing those events. We also had a crew of “always ready” volunteers in the parking lot on that very busy day. Thank you David Warren, Mike Semken, Frank Beylotte and Jim Morris for stepping up on short notice. In addition, we were all praying for Hap and Laura Lempesis’ son Luke who was hospitalized at MUSC this month with a serious illness. We are thankful to see Luke on the mend and back at home. OK, now for the good stuff. I can’t say enough about the support I have received over the past year from the Officers, Board, Committees and Membership, and working with Jeanne and her group of fun loving ladies has been a blast. It takes a team effort to keep this club the fun, family friendly place we all love it to be. Yes, we had a few issues to deal with, but every organization does. It’s how we handle those issues that is important, and I am proud of each and every one of you for keeping us moving forward. The club is healthy with a waiting list near 70 folks, and a strong legacy for generations to come. We have new floating docks coming our way in the short term, and we are looking at other improvements to the clubhouse and grounds. Thank you all for your commitment to JIYC. To our staff…Ron, Ed and the bartenders…you are simply the best. Ron does more for this club than most people realize. I’m not the first outgoing Commodore to recognize it, and I won’t be the last. Thank you Ron, for guiding me, for protecting me and the club, and for doing what you do for our members every day. I think that everyone will agree that Ed has been a fantastic addition to our staff. There are so many improvements he has made to our club which needed serious attention. Ed took on the tough jobs in the parking lot and on the dock. We spread him pretty thin on many occasions. Thanks Ed, for showing us that we made the right decision last year to bring you on board. Exceptionally well done! Our bartenders have tirelessly served us (some more than others) all year long. They hear and see more than they would like, accomplish tough tasks for special events, but for some crazy reason they keep coming back! They are more than just bartenders, they are key members of our staff that make the club a great place to come relax. A special shout out to Heather for her loyal and dedicated service over the years. I look forward to seeing her on the other side of the bar with Bobby, and also being active in the Ladies Auxiliary. Lastly, thank you to my wife Penny. She dealt with the long weeks and late nights with grace and genuine concern for me. She never once complained about me being gone or working club issues from home. We both look forward to once again quietly sitting on the deck watching the beautiful sunsets while sipping on a beverage (or two). Thanks for entrusting me to be your Commodore in 2017-2018. It was an honor to serve you and this great club. Best of luck to Hap in the coming year.
