CYCLIC BEHAVIOR OF STEEL SHEAR WALL SYSTEMS Abolhassan Astaneh-Asl 1 and Qiuhong Zhao 2 INTRODUCTION Stiffened and un-stiffened steel plate shear walls have been used in recent years to resist lateral loads in North America and Japan. Figure one shows sketches of typical stiffened and un-stiffened steel shear walls. Most of the shear walls used in recent years in USA and Canada have been un-stiffened steel plate shear walls. However, in some seismic retrofit projects stiffened shear walls have also been used. In Japan, most of the steel shear walls used in recent years have been stiffened shear walls. A. Astaneh-Asl (2001) provides a summary of applications of steel shear walls in major structures in USA and Japan. Figure 1.
