A GIANT NETWORK OF COMPUTERS

Millions of Computers are connected to

each other through Internet.

As you talk to your friends and relatives over the phone in any corner of the World….

the same way you can talk, share text, photographs or even videos , if you have an

Internet Connection in your computer.

What do you mean by “ Internet Connection” ?

You all watch Disney Channel, Cartoon Network and Pogo on your TV sets.

And you get all these channels through your cable operator

Cable operator gives you this connection by fixing a

cable (wire) to your TV Set…..

Similarly

To get access to the INTERNET you need some connection to your

COMPUTER.

•Google got its name from the mathematical figure googol, which denotes the number 'one followed by a hundred zeros'.

•Yahoo! derived its name from the word Yahoo coined by Jonathan Swift in Gulliver's Travels. A Yahoo is a person who is repulsive in appearance and action and is barely human!

•Researchers consider that the first search engine was Archie, created in 1990 by Alan Emtage, a student at McGill University in Montreal, Canada.

•It was once considered a letter in the English language. The Chinese call it a little mouse, Danes and Swedes call it 'elephant's trunk', Germans a spider monkey, and Italians a snail. Israelis pronounce it 'strudels' and the Czechs say 'rollmops's...What is it? The @ sign.

The first Internet worm was created by Robert T.Morris, Jr, and attacked more than 6000 Internet hosts.

Mosaic, is the first Web browser with a GUI.

Marc Andreessen founded Netscape.

Boeing was the first airline to discover the Y2K problem, way back in 1993.

Satyam Online become the first private ISP in December 1998 to offer Internet connections in India.

• Browser -A browser is a software program used to access and display pages and files on the web. E.g. Mozilla Firefox, Internet Explorer , Netscape etc.

2. Chatting – A way of communication between two users via computer. Once a chat has been initiated, either user can enter text by typing on the keyboard and the entered text will appear on the other user's monitor.

3. E-mail (Electronic Mail) - is the exchange of computer-stored messages through Internet.

4. Internet - A global network connecting millions of computers.

5. Modem (Modulator-Demodulator) - A piece of hardware that helps in transmitting data from one computer to other over a phone line.

6. Surfing – Visiting different sites on the internet through a web browser.

7. Search Engine - Software that enables users to search the Internet using keywords. Examples of well known services of this type are AltaVista and Google.

8. Web Page - A page designed for viewing in a web browser.

9. Website - A site (location) on the World Wide Web. Each website contains a homepage, which is the first document users see when they enter the site. The site might also contain additional documents and files.
