• Print the God of Every Generation Lyric and Scripture Match Cards (pp. 9-10) and duplicate the pages, one set for each group of three to four children.

• Cut out each set of cards and place the pieces in reclosable plastic bags.

• Divide into groups of three or four.

• Explain that the lyrics of “God of Every Generation” are based on Bible verses. None of the verses will match the lyrics word for word.

• Groups empty the contents of their bag and work together to match the lyrics to the correct Scripture.

• After all groups are finished, call out a Scripture or lyric and allow the children to tell you their match, and then discuss each one.

Answers:

° “Born among the peasant strangers”—Luke 2:7 Explain that Mary and Joseph traveled to Bethlehem to register and pay their taxes. While in Bethlehem, Jesus was born. He was born among strangers.

° “God incarnate came to earth”—John 1:14 Explain that the word incarnate means in human form. So God came to earth in human form, and His name was Jesus.

“For God loved the world in this way: He gave His one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in Him will not perish but have eternal life” (John 3:16, CSB).

° “Offered up, for our redemption, Jesus Christ, His only Son”—Ephesians 1:7 Because of Jesus’ death on the cross, we can be forgiven of our sins and be saved.

• ° “God of ev’ry generation, pouring out Your gift of life through Your loving sacrifice”—Genesis 9:12 God loved every generation and made a covenant (agreement) that He would provide a way of salvation.

° “How relentless Your pursuing as You draw us to Your light”—John 8:12 God’s love is relentless. He never gives up on wanting people to come to know Him. Jesus is the Light of the world. Anyone who follows Him will have the light of life.

NOTE: Consider using this activity during several classes so you can spend more time on the difficult words and phrases.

Steady Beat ActivityMUSIC

• Gather tennis balls or other kinds of balls that bounce well.

• Distribute balls, one per child.

• Say, As we listen to “God of Every Generation,” we are going to bounce our balls on beat one of each four-beat measure.

• Practice by leading the children to count out loud in a continual four-beat pattern while bouncing their ball on beat one.

• Play the recording. Continue to count out loud as the children bounce their ball on beat one.SAMPLE


• Discuss what they noticed about the song. Did most of the phrases begin on beat one? (Answer: no) The following phrases begin on beat 1:

Teach the Verse - Same and Different Game

MUSIC

• Print the Same and Different Game Shapes (pp. 11-14).

• Distribute the shapes to the children.

• Say, Find a person who has a shape exactly like yours, and make sure the colors match, too.

• Once this task is complete, continue, Now find a person that has a different shape than yours.

• Watch to see if anyone matches just colors, different shapes, or shapes but different colors. Explain they are still correct because you only said shape.

• Explain that the Verses of “God of Every Generation” have two phrases that are exactly the same.

• Say, Let’s sing Verse 1 and see if you can determine which two phrases are the same. I will sing each phrase, and then you will echo sing the same phrase. (Answer: “God incarnate came to earth”—meas. 7; “in the myst’ry of His birth”—meas. 11).
