The Wayne Family
A study centering on the history and lineage of the Wayne
family(s) of Missouri in the 1800s.

Hypothesis:
It is my belief that my Fraternal line can trace a path back to
1431, Derbyshire, England. There are several places along the way
that are not documented, questionable and/or missing. Through
detective work, educated guesses and extrapolation, the evidence is
real compelling that it is correct,
just short of being eligible for membership in DAR/SAR and being
able to claim/register a coat of arms in English Heraldry.
I know from my grandfather, that his folks came from Missouri
and this is where I start my search. I knew very little family
history, for reasons that still remain mostly unknown to me, my
line became estranged from the rest since my g grandfather. Prior
to the Civil War, the only Waynes in Missouri were three families
in an area known as "Little Dixie". One in Callaway Co. (my line),
one in Audrian Co. and one in Boone Co. They seem to be related,
how has been guess work, but these families and related families in
Illinois and Wisconsin produced many, many, many children, of which
I am in contact with a few over the internet. From here, the line
traces through Kentucky, then Virginia, then back to
Pennsylvania.
There exits an official Wayne tree (Edwin Jaquett Seller’s book
"English Ancestry Of The Wayne Family of Pennsylvania", 1927)
tracing the lineage from Colonial America back to 15th Century
England. There are several holes and questionable spots in this
tree. The main challenge is trying to link the line from Virginia
and later, with the line from Pennsylvania and before. That's what
this paper (in part) tries to accomplish. Another purpose is to
bring these lines back together.
Assumption 1:
In censuses and other documentation, "Wayne" appears in many
forms. I will assume that because of mechanical typos or illiteracy
"Waine", "Wain" etc. are phonetic spellings and they all represent
"Wayne", E.g.:
- John WAYNE (1810 Washington Co. KY Census) should be the same
as John WAIN (1820 Washington Co. KY Census), the ages from 1810 to
1820 seem to correspond (noting that John C. Waine is probably the
son of John).
- Benjamin WAIN (1810 Montgomery Co. KY Census) is more than
likely the same as Benjamin WAYNE (1820 Montgomery Co. KY
Census).
- John W. WAINE (1820 Bourbon Co. KY Census) is probably a
brother-in-law to Judith WAYNE (1810 Bourbon Co. KY Census) and
John WAINE (1810 Montgomery Co. KY Census) is probably the father
of Benjamin and John W. Other documentation points to this.
- There is a John M. Wain (1823/24/25 Callaway Co. Tax list) and
a Thomas Wain (1823/24/25 Franklin Co. tax list). I believe that
John is the John from Bourbon County and Thomas is the younger son
of Judith as indicated in the 1810/1820 KY Censuses (a 16-18 year
old is listed). Thomas disappears at this point. The "M" is a typo
(should be a "W").
- I think it clear that the "John W" in the 1830 (Wayne), 1840
(Wain) & 1850 (Wayne) Missouri censuses are the same. It
doesn't make sense to have the same "John W" appear in the same
place in 1830 & 1850 and be replaced by another "John W" in
1840, just because the surname is spelled different.
- In Virginia and Kentucky, there is a family(s), named Whayne.
This is the only place they are found. The story goes that to
distinguish the Wayne family in Campbell Co. and the one in
King&Queen Co., one family changed the spelling. It's not clear
which one was which?
- There is another Wayne family that appears in West Virginia,
that doesn't seem to be linked to my line, some of them believe
that their name was changed from MacElwain. The link may occur back
in Ireland?
Assumption 2:
I assume that the ages and numbers of offspring are correct in
the censuses. I found it difficult to be accurate pulling from the
correct columns when trying to count off of the microfilm for the
earlier Censuses, but they do seem to add up (there are
exceptions). I believe I have accounted for all the children. There
were also cases were daughters and their husbands and families also
lived in the same household.
Assumption 3:
I'll claim that the data I do have is complete enough to make my
assertions. I find new information all the time that clarifies a
lot of relationships, and yet hasn't changed the overall
hypothesis.
Assumption 4:
There was initially only one Wayne family in Colonial America
(there are situations where people had changed their name to
Wayne). The majority of Wayne families today should be able to
trace their lineage back to one of the six surviving sons of Capt.
Anthony Wayne (Francis, Gabriel, Isaac, Humphrey, Jacob & John.
William dying before giving issue). As a rule of thumb, each son
settled in a different part of the new nation. I.e. Francis' line
appears to have settled in Virginia; Gabriel's in South
Carolina/Georgia; Isaac's male line died out; Humphrey's in
Georgia; Jacob's and John's in Pennsylviania/New Jersey/New York.
This isn't completely proven and there are exceptions. Many Black
and Indian families took (or were given) the Wayne name and they
too should be included. Even John Wayne (Marion Michael Morrison)
was named after "Mad" Anthony Wayne and shares our heritage through
adoption (so to speak).

covering one decade. Within each section, different items are
numbered, i.e. “[##]”. When I reference a particular piece of data
or item, I’ll list it as such: [1820.05]. This means that I am
pointing out something about the fifth item under 1820.

John Wayn - Pvt 2nd NJ Regt
John - Pvt 2nd NJ Regt
John - Pvt Cumming's NJ Bttn
Jacob - Klock's Regt of NY Mil
Can’t be sure if these three John’s are the same, but these
match up with names under Jacob10’s line being in NJ/NY.
Christopher - Pvt Hazen's Regt of Cont. Troops
Godfrey - Pvt Hazen's Regt of Cont. Troops
John - Pvt Hazen's Regt of Cont. Troops
Mic'l - Baldwin's Regt of Artificers in Cont. Troops
Since these are Continental troops, it’s not very helpful. John
& Michael could possibly be Francis10’s sons? Need to find out
the origins of Hazen’s Regt. All I’ve found out about Hazen is that
it started as Hazen’s Company of Robert Rodger’s Battalion in the
French and Indian War. In the 1790 PA Census for Northumberland Co.
there is a Christian, is this the same as Christopher? If so then
it would indicate that Hazen's Regt is from PA. Are Christopher,
Godfrey & John brothers?
Anthony - Col 5th PA Regt/Brig Gen
Joseph - Pvt 1st PA Bttn
It’s clear as to who this Anthony is :-) Is this Joseph a
grandson of Francis?
Benjamin - Pvt 3rd, 5th, 7th, 11th VA Regt
Charles - 7th VA Regt
Humphrey - Pvt 1st VA State Regt
Japheth - Pvt 3rd, 5th, 7th, 11th VA Regt
This seems to indicate that they are related. Probably this
Humphrey is Francis10’s son. Benjamin, Charles and Japheth are
brothers (from John11 or Michael11). This from the fact that family
members usually fought in the same unit (until the death of the
Sullivans in WWII). It also depends on when they fought. If they
were Michael11’s, they could have been old enough to fight in the
later years of the war. The whole brood could belong to John11? Is
Japheth actually Joseph?

From:[email protected]
William WHAYNE is first mentioned in a history of King &
Queen County as being elected a Deacon of the Baptist Church in
King & Queen Co. It is before the Revolutionary War..I think
1750. William Whayne's wife was probably Sarah. Sarah Whayne is
mentioned in the court records of Jefferson Co, KY. Their son Isaac
Whayne disappeared from the King & Queen tax rolls before the
death of William. The year, c1809, William disappeared from the tax
rolls, Isaac came back to King & Queen Co VA for a very short
stay. Some of William's land went to Simeon Simcoe. Simeon married
William's daughter Elizabeth in about 1803. Both Isaac and
Elizabeth moved to Jefferson Co, KY. Simeon died shortly after
arriving. On the day Simeon's will was probated in 1813, Priscilla
Jeffries chose Isaac Whayne as her guardian. Priscilla later
married Walker Pruitt of King & Queen Co. They stayed close to
Elizabeth and her children. Isaac moved on to Davies Co, KY.
In the court record of Lousiville there is reference that
Elizabeth received 1/3 of the money collected from the VA estate
and sent to them by Mr Thomas Jeffries. I believe this indicates
that William had two surviving children and a Spouse, Sarah.
When Walker Pruitt died he left inheritance to, his wife, to his
sister in K & Q Co. and to a Brother in the mid west. Priscilla
Pruitt left inheritance to the three Simcoe Children that were
Elizabeth's children,second marriage for Simeon.
Family Tradition says there is a relationship to Mad Anthony
WAYNE. I can find no evidence that this is true. I think there may
be a relationship with the Jeffries and perhaps the Pruitts.
His son (Isaac), his daughter (Elizabeth Whayne Simcoe) and a
Sarah Whayne were in Jefferson Co, KY before 1813.

Old School Baptist, and a State's rights Democrat of the purest
water. In early days he was a great wolf hunter. On a certain
occasion he went into a wolfs den, killed the old ones, and brought
out eight young ones alive. He paid his taxes for two years with
the scalps of the latter. On another occasion he attacked a gang of
nine large wolves that had followed a neighbor of his, an old man,
several miles, trying to kill and devour him and his horse. Mr.
Martin killed three out of the nine with a club, while sitting on
his horse.

[05] Wayne.-John Wayne, of Virginia (Campbell Co.?), had a son
named Temple, who was of a roving disposition and passionately fond
of hunting. He settled in Audrain Co., Mo., in 1827, and killed Six
deer the First day he stoped there. During the hunting seasons no
one killed more deer and wolves than he did, and he lived for years
entirely on wild game. He was never satisfied except when he was in
the woods, where he spent nearly all of his time, night and
day-Sunday being like any other day to him. He was married first to
Lorinda Peyton, by whom he had-William, Mary, Temple, Jr., Joseph,
Lorinda, Jane, and James. He was married the second time to
Elizabeth Griggs, and they had-Lucy A., George, Elizabeth, Emily,
Alfred, and Franklin (and Martha?).

[13] The following is from "The History of Cass and Bates
Counties,
Missouri", pub. 1883 by National Historical Co., St. Joseph,
Mo., p.1242.
"John H. Bowden is among the prominent farmers and stock men of
Bates County. He is a native of North Carolina, and was born in
Caswell County, February 22, 1830. Benjamin Bowden, his father, was
a native of North Carolina, where he grew to manhood and married
Miss Anna Combs, also of that state. John H. moved with his father
to Missouri in the spring of 1843, and located in Callaway County.
He spent his early days on a farm, obtaining his education
principally through his own efforts. In the spring of 1850, in
company with Captain McCulloch and others, he made the trip
overland to California, where they arrived in July. After passing
about two years in the gold mines prospecting and mining, he
returned to Missouri in the fall of 1852. Mr. Bowden was married in
Callaway County, October 11, 1854, to Miss Emarine Wayne, a
daughter of John W. Wayne. She is a native of Callaway County,
where she was raised and educated. Directly after this event he
came to Bates County, purchased land and improved his present farm.
He has 700 acres, 400 acres in his home place, all fenced and
improved, upon which is a fair house and barn and a good orchard,
with 300 apple trees and an abundance of peach, etc. He resides on
section 24, and is quite extensively engaged in feeding and
handling stock. Mr. and Mrs. Bowden have seven children: Margara
R., a teacher in the Butler school; Georgia Ann (now Mrs. William
Herrel); Elizabeth W. (now Mrs. John Allison); Susie E., Ella,
Charles P. and Emma J. Mr. B. is a member of the M. E. Church and
his wife of the Christian Church."

moving on to UNION CO., IL and then to MO. Could also had a brother
named ISAAC. Samuel C., was married more then once. 1st m. ? 2nd m.
Elisa Maulden. Their children were, CHARLES R., MARY S (b. 1868,

household in the 1880 cen. Holcomb Island twp., Dunklin Co., MO,
were three stepchildren, NANCY LOVELADY, SEVERE LOVELADY. JOHN
LOVELADY. I have just found info that Elisa was first married to a
JOHN LOVELADY.
My gGrandfather was the SAMUEL C. Jr., b. 1872 Anna IL, m. MARY

Kathleen
White Miles, pub. Fall, 1973 by The Printery in Clinton,

"Laura Wayne, a young lady of about 20, committed suicide by
hanging
last Friday at H. T. Mullin's south of Urich. No reason can be
assigned
for the rash act. Her remains were buried in Mullin's
graveyard
Saturday."
Mullin's Cemetery still exists south of Urich. I have several
relatives
buried there. It may have started as a family cemetery, but
others are
also buried there. Just didn't want you to make an assumption
that
Laura Wayne was in the Mullins family just from the cemetery
information. The fact that she died on H. T. Mullin's property
may tie
her to the family though.
I have the census microfilm and used to do lookups for the
USGenWeb. I
had to stop though because in March, our church secretary
resigned and I
have been filling in on a volunteer basis. I just didn't have
enough
hours available to do the census searches because it takes so
long to do
each one. It would take between 8 and 12 hours to search 1870
through
1920.
I can find no references to the surname BOWDON/BOWDOIN, etc.
WILLIAMS
was and is a very popular surname in Henry County. There are
116
WILLIAMS buried in Englewood Cemetery; however, I can find no
Alexander
or Susan WILLIAMS anyplace.
Bates and Henry Counties have similar topography, fairly flat
and very
good farm land. In the 1850's, it was kind of the western edge
of
civilization (if you could call it that). The migration from
Henry to
Bates was common. In fact, my JENKINS ancestors moved from Henry
to
Bates and my dad was born in Bates County in 1906 and lived
there until
returning to Clinton in the early 1930's.
I do have the "History of Bates County" and checked for WILLIAMS
and
BOWDON/BOWDOIN. There is a biography for John H. BOWDEN who
married
Emarine WAYNE 11 Oct 1854 in Callaway County. If you don't have
it, I
will be happy to send it to you.

Conclusions:
We know that all three families spent time in Kentucky before
moving on to Missouri (i.e. birthplace of offspring). How are they
related, If at all? Looking at the early Censuses of Kentucky,
Waynes centered around three main areas,
Bourbon/Montgomery/Madison/Estil Cos, Jefferson/Daviess Cos and
Washington/Breckinridge Cos. It appears that each group is related
and my guess is that they are from different branches primarily
because by 1830 the former group disappears from Kentucky and
William, Temple and John appear in Missouri. The latter seems to
have basically stayed in Kentucky.
By 1810, John & William settle in Washington Co., but I have
not found where they came from. They were born between 1750 &
1760, which should put them in PA. Isaac is the son of a William
from King&Queen Co., VA. Benjamin is the Son of John and Judith
is a daughter-in-law, John hailing from Campbell Co., VA. Nathaniel
is the son of Ephraim.
Who are these three men that settled in MO? How are they related
and did they migrate from Kentucky? If we start with a portion of
an abstract from Edgar Co., IL., that I’m still not sure how
accurate it is, but it’s a place to start, “A brother of Benjamin,
Temple Wayne, left Ill to live in the same county in Missouri where
Nathaniel's brother was living, and adjoining a county where
Nathaniel's father had lived.” Prior to 1830 parts of present day
Audrain & Boone Co’s. were part of Callaway. From an abstract
of a history of Callaway Co., Temple settled in Callaway (Audrain)
in 1827 and his father was John Wayne of Campbell Co., Va.
This would seem to indicate that William L and Nathaniel are
brothers and their father is Ephraim. I don’t understand why John W
was never mentioned?? The will of John Whayne (of Campbell Co., Va.
& Montgomery Co., Ky.) listed Benjamin, John W, Temple and
William as brothers (William disappears), therefore, is this John W
the same John W that settled in Callaway? The marriage record of
John & Eliza Talbott in 1818 Bourbon Co., KY. and a law suit
naming John & Elizabeth, “who are now living in MO” as
defendants would seem to confirm that they are all related.
Ephraim comes to Missouri before 1819. Temple settles in Audrain
in 1827. John W. moves to Callaway about 1824. John's son, Thomas
(Joshua) was born in 1823 KY, so we can narrow that down to between
1823 and 1824. It's curious to note that the plot of land purchased
in [1820.07] is located on the Guthrie Quadrangle, about two miles
south west of the Fulton Municipal Airport. However, [1840.01],
shows that John lived in Nine Mile Prairie Township, which is East
North-East of Fulton and toward the county line. Does this mean
that John moved again between 1824 and 1840? And again, [1850.01]
shows that John W lived in district 12, which at this time, I don't
know what the boundaries are.
Ephraim and Ellenor (Eleanor), as far as I can tell, had two
sons, Nathaniel [1700.01] and William L and two daughters
([1800.03] & [1810.01]). William was 27 in 1820 when he became
a candidate for Howard County Coroner ([1820.04]). Ephraim dies
about 1819 (at the age of 64). That part of Howard Co. becomes
Boone Co in Nov 1820. Ellenor lives with William until her death
prior to 1850, [1830.02] and [1840.01] shows an elderly woman
between 70 and 80, living with William. Nathaniel moves on to Grant
Co., WI with Benjamin, John W's and Temple's brother[?]
I can not find anything on William's wife, except that she dies
prior to 1850. They had six children (?): Archibald H(ill) and one
other male. Amelia P., Eliza J., Sarah E. (?) and one other female.
In 1838, William adopted Jesse and Susan Johnson ([1830.08]). By
1850, William is living with a Jonathan and Sarah E [Wayne?]
Grammer and he dies 13 May 1857 in Sturgeon, "An old citizen"
(Columbia Weekly Statesman).
A.H. and Sarah E. do not appear with the offspring lists of
Temple [1820.05] and John W. ([1840.01/.02] &
[1850.01/.07/.09]) but their ages correspond with [1840.01]. A.H.
was born two years before John W was married [1810.02]. William
must be living with his married daughter Sarah E. in 1850
[1850.06]. Sarah E.'s husband, Jonathan Grammer, is a merchant, the
same as William L. What kind of merchant? William L. had been a
candidate for coroner, so was this a preoccupation with his
father's death or an extension of the "family" business (the
tannery at Waynesborough) [Intro.02]?
Did Temple's father move from Campbell Co., VA (?) to Montgomery
Co., KY? If so then the John Waine from Montgomery Co., KY in the
1810 Census just might be Temple's father. Looking at [1830.02],
Temple was a farmer in Bourbon Co. Montgomery Co. KY grew out of
Bourbon Co., KY in 1797 and was a neighboring county. [1820.05]
gives all of Temple's offspring.
Judith Wayne dies prior to 1820 and by 1823, John W. moves to
Callaway Co., MO, with Thomas (Judith's youngest son) tagging along
until they come to Franklin Co [1820.03]. Thomas later dies or
moves on before 1830. I believe that Thomas is John's cousin only
because one of John's children is Thomas, presumably named for
him?? I also know that my great great grandfather (Benjamin) was a
stock dealer and my great grandfather (John I) was a fur trader and
perhaps this too is a link back to the tannery at
Waynesborough?
I rule out the John and William from Washington Co., primarily
because this county is distant from the other counties that show
record of the Wayne's that moved to Missouri and also, because it
appears (in later censuses) that those two families stayed and
settled in and around Washington County.
The following are four family lines. This is the structure that
I believe is correct. I hope I've shown this from the data. Again,
this hypothesis is based on only the available data, I'm sure one
could throw in a skewed fact or two and change everything, but
then, that's what I want to see, something to refute my hypothesis.
Now I need to make a link between Judith and Capt Anthony Wayne. I
have many more leads to check and they will eventually end up in
this document.

============
Well, I've been able to confirm the original (??) plot of land
that
John W had purchased in 1825 and added to in 1831, but this
conflicts with
the 1840 Census. I'm now looking for the boundaries of the 12th
District
on the 1850 Census. The original plot of land is just SW of the
Fulton
Municipal Airport in Round Prairie TWP. By 1840, the family was
living in
Nine Mile Prairie TWP. I thought that the place of residence
would be on
the land they owned, but John W had also purchased some river
bottom land
(almost the entire section) along the Missouri in Cote Sans
Dessein TWP
between 1837 and 1847, so I've come to the conclusion that the
family lived
in Nine Mile Prairie (12th District??) perhaps 10 to 20 miles
from the
original plot (160 acres).
By 1860, John W and a son, Benjamin (my gg grandfather) had
purchased
lands in Henry Co, near several son-in-laws, Andrew J Baker,
John H Bowden,
James Pace and Alexander Williams (haven't verified that all
are
son-in-laws. Have only confirmed John and Alexander) in Bates,
St. Clair
and Cedar counties. Andrew and James are listed with several
M.I.s,
although, I did prove from the deed records that Andrew Baker
and Andrew J
Baker are the same person.
I've only gone through deed records between 1821 and 1870
(LDS
microfilm) and land patents between 1820 and 1908, therefore I
don't have
the full picture yet. A James and Wyatt Pace bought (or was
deeded) the
original plot in 1839 (a James Pace married John W's daughter,
Zerlinda in
1836). There's also a James and Zerlinda Pace in the 1850 Census
for Linn
Co. Are these all the same? John W, also sold off some of the
river
bottom land to a Walter McMillian (??) in 1856. At this time, I
don't know
what happened to the rest of the section. What's really
interesting is
that when John W had purchased the river bottom land, some of it
was
purchased from a William and John Estes. Family history states
that we are
related to the James/Daltons somehow. I know that some of the MO
Estes are
related to them, so perhaps this is that link??
======================
I was going over some old and new records, when I noticed
something. My
ggg grandmother, Elizabeth Wayne died in Grand River TWP, Greene
Co., MO
in Apr 1860 (I don't know why she was there - visiting
family/friends?). Her Son-in-law, Alexander Williams dies about
Jul
1860, in Bates Co., MO. Was there something going around at that
time?
Was there some sort of hospital or sanitarium there near
Springfield?
========================
My ggg grandfather is John W Wayne of Callaway Co. MO. He came
to MO in
1824 from KY. Of the three Johns I can find in early 1800s KY,
the John W from
Bourbon Co. is the most likely. I've heard one theory that this
John W is a son
of Ephraim - I discount this theory, simply because of a
marriage record of John
Jr. and Betsey Talbot. This means that John Jr. is John Sr.'s
son. I follow
another record that states that John W married an Elizabeth
Talbot of Bourbon
Co. John Jr. and John W are the same person! It's also said that
Benjamin and
Nathaniel are cousins. This could be true, but someone had
further stated that
John Sr. and Ephraim had to be brothers. I discount this
because, John Sr.
wouldn't have gone by John Sr., but by John II or Jr., that is
if he and Ephraim
are brothers (I don't know, do Jr.'s go by Sr. when their father
dies??).
Francis had five sons, so Benjamin and Nathaniel could still be
(2nd) cousins.
So which of the four remaining brothers does John Sr. come from?
Three of the
brothers were married after John Sr was born (1752). That leaves
Anthony (as an
unknown), but all? Of his children are listed. The marriage of
Humphrey and
Mary Ann Parker in 1781 just may be a second marriage(??). The
marriage seems
to be 'late' compared to the others, if so, where there children
from the
first? Of course, Humphrey could also have been the youngest
(born after 1741)
or he simply married late?
From the marriage of John Sr.'s daughter, Mary and James Miller
in K&Q Co.
and other records (not listed), John Sr. had reason for being in
K&Q Co, but on
the other hand, what else brought him to K&Q? The 1787 VA
Census shows a
Tabatha Whayne (Wayne) in K&Q Co or at least land that she
owned. Francis' son,
Abraham (John Sr.'s brother) married a Tabitha Parry. I don't
think that this
is a coincidence. This would seem to point to a family
connection. However, I
can not place Benjamin, Charles, William, Adam and Joseph. There
is a
relationship between John Sr. and Joseph. They both appear as
witnesses to a
wedding between William McAllister and Elizabeth Smith, 12 May
1789 and John is
a bondsman and witness to Joseph's marriage to Mary Drinkwater,
15 April 1790,
but that relationship is unknown. I think a bondsman usually
reflects a family
link? The only surviving male child of Abraham and Tabitha is
Caleb Parry and
by the 1810 VA Census, only Charles and a Diana Whayne remain in
VA, Although,
the 1800 and 1810 PA Census shows Caleb P still in PA. This may
mean that other
"family" members actually maintained the residence there. The
one saving grace
is that I have no information on the children of Michael and
Humphrey. Anthony
and Abraham have all? Their children listed, so it's possible
that John (Sr),
Benjamin, Charles, William, Adam and Joseph belong to John
(except John Sr.),
Michael and/or Humphrey.
John Sr. and Benjamin move to Edgar Co., Ill. From Montgomery
Co. and
Benjamin and Nathaniel move on to Grant Co., WI. Michael and his
brother John
Sr. eventually moves up to Knox Co., Ill. (??)
Please note that I am assuming that when offspring are listed
for a
particular line, *all* the children for that line have been
listed. Also I
place Humphrey (I don't have his birth date) between Abraham and
Elizabeth only
because the spacing between those two are greater than any other
spacing. I'm
not saying "Eureka, this is it!" But from the bits and pieces I
can gather from
you and others (Jim Carns, Frank Bevc, Delbert Brooksher, Rhoby
A. Wayne-Rasch,
Marsha ?, etc), this is just a hypotheses. I haven't checked out
everything yet
and I see possible holes, but using this as a stepping off
point, perhaps
specific queries can be made? I do have this feeling that we are
all related
somehow. This is just one possibility.
Oh :-), back to my original question, if John Sr. is the son of
either
Humphrey or Michael and the nephew of John, then John Sr.'s
William L and
Ephraim's William L could mean that the "L" stands for the same
thing and I
think it's "Leonard". My other supporting data, is a
Revolutionary Pension file
abstract for a Joseph Scott of Amelia Co. VA, which is inbetween
K&Q CO. and
Campbell Co. It lists his children and one being "Judith, wife
of Leonard
Wayne". Now I have problems with this. The Wife of John Sr's
William L is
Judith Lawrence, which either signifies an adoption etc. or
there is another
Judith in or around Campbell Co.? A Leonard Wayne does appear in
the 1840/50/60
Census for Campbell Co (I haven't looked at these yet). Even if
there are two
Judiths, there is a family link here and I would still say that
"L" stands for
"Leonard".
The 1799 Tax List for Madison Co. shows a white male over 13,
could be
Nathaniel (19-21), but William L was born in 1793, so shouldn't
he have appeared
as a white male under 10 (if they kept track of children that
young)??
William L's first wife was Lucy Hill and all I know for sure is
that he Had
Archibald Hill with her. Temple Wayne Jr., married a Sarah
"Sally" Johnson, so
his second wife may have caused some problems keeping the two
Sarahs separate.
This marriage must have taken place in or before 1838 (where?),
because William
L adopted her two children(?), Susan and Jesse, their father was
Jesse (dec.).
There are two slots in the 1840 Census that I can not account
for (a male and
female) I have a marriage record of a William S (I think this to
be a
transcription error and it is 'L') Wayne and a Virginia M
Pundell, 10/17/50.
This could be his third marriage, but I always thought that this
William L, was
Temple's oldest. There was a William that went off to fight in
the Mexican War,
and when these young men returned, they married and moved west.
John W's
oldest, Joshua T, did the same when he married Jane Straw in
1848. In 1850,
Ephraim's William L was 57 and he dies in 1857 "an old citizen"
with no mention
of a wife.
Amelia Perry has a weird ring to it. Not only does Archibald
have a son
named Perry, Perry (or Parry) is also the maiden name of William
L's great aunt
Tahitha (another link?). Amelia is also a county in VA (What
does that have to
do with anything? :-) My record shows Amelia marring a Miller
Barnes,
18Dec1831. The adoption record for Susan and Jesse Johnson,
shows a Moses M
Barnes as a witness. These two Barnes and your Moses Miller is
probably the
same person. For Houston Canada, I have a Houser and a Housan.
His given name
may have been Houston and he went by Houser. Why do you have a
"?" next to
Martha? In the 1850 Census, it shows William L living with a
Jonathan and Sarah
E. Grammer. What is his relationship to Jonathan? I always
thought that Sarah
E was William L's daughter? There is a "lost/partial" marriage
record for a
Matilda Wayne in Callaway Co., could this be Martha? The three
wives of
Archibald that I am aware of are Sarah A Johnson (1829?), Nancy
Crosswhite (whom
I think dies in childbirth with Perry-1845?) and Sarah Terry
(1847). You had
"Mary Elizabeth" married to Houston and then "Elizabeth Jane"
married to
Houston. This is an error, but what kind of an error?
Duplication or typo,
etc?
If Ephraim dies in 1824, then what happened to him between 1819
and 1824?
I lose track of him in 1819. He was 64 in 1819 (69 in '24).
Looking through addresses for Wayne in MO, I found the
following:
Wayne, Archie L 2412 Headland Dr, Saint Charles, MO
63301-1417
Phone: (314)946-3204
Wayne, Archie Sr 2629 Slattery St, Saint Louis, MO
63106-1116
Phone: (314)533-4075
You know they have to be descendents of Archibald Hill!!! I
would
encourage you to contact them. They may have family history,
being part of that
line that "stayed" in MO. BTW, if you ask Archie L what the "L"
stands for,
what do you think the odds would be that it's "Leonard"? ;-) If
you follow this
advice, please let me know what's said.

Odds&Ends:
---------
[01] The name Wayne is actually a spelling variation on one of
the oldest professions, that of a wheelwright, or "Wain" wright, as
they were called. They were also called Cartwrights (as in Bonanza,
the TV show...), from the Middle English word wain = cart, wagon
(from Old English woegen ). Sometimes Wain was a place name that
described the man who lived at the house that bore a sign of the
astronomical constellation of the Plough, which was known in
medieval times as Charles' Wain (Charles being short for
Charlemagne), but that was the exception to the naming rule.
Variations include Wayne, Wane, Waine, Waines, Wainman, Whenman,
Wenman. In Germany, the man of that profession was called Wegenmann
.
[02] The Wayne family ran a tannery at Waynesborough in the
1700s.
