In the M2 and M3 shell bodies the base is an integral part of the shellbody. Inthe M2 Alternate, M3 Alternate and M4 shell bodies, thebaseis made separately and then brazed to the shell casing. Issue of .eithertype is authorized.

2. STANDARDIZATION.

An item, when marked "S" lstandard), is.one-which is procured andsiored for issue. An item, when marked t'SStt (Substitute Standard),is onewhich is stored and procured forissuewhen thestandard itemis not available. An item marked t'Lstt (Limitea Standard), is onewhich is no longer procured but is maintained and stored for issueuntil supply is exhausted.

CARTRIDGES.

(a) One extra cartridge is packed with every fiJth box of completerounds.

(U) tfre ignition cartridge MK.I has been superseded by the cartridge811, but propelling charges may be issued with the older cartridge.

PROPELLING CHARGBS.

(a) The M6 and M? powder charges arebasicallythe sarne and may beused interchangeablyon aII shellslisted,with the exceptionof the3-inch sub-caliber, provided nomore than 20-1/2 rtngs are usedon the M4 shell. When the M6 propelling charge ls furnished, acomplete round charge of. 25 bundles 6our packs of five bundleseach and five separate bundles) is placed over the cartridge con-tainer and the clip adjusted. The cartridge is then inserted. TheM7 propelling charge for the M4 shell is packed with the completeround in a manner similar to the packing of the M6 propellingcharge.

(b) Some of the stored boxes of shells have the M5A1 propelling charge.The M5A1 propellingcharge is packed twocharges and two cart-ridges to a sma]] carton and the carton placed in the completeround box.

(c) A halJ bundle is included with each M5A1 propelling charge and isfurnished as an extra increment in addition to the full chargeforthe purpose of obtaining intermediate ranges.

RANGE TABLES.

The range tables specified are appJ.icable only when the designatedpropelling charge is used.

PACKAGING.

M4 and M5 fuzes can be used only on M3 and M4 HE shells. At thepresent time, atl M3 and M4 HE shells are issued with the M3 fuzeonly. M4 and M5 fuzes are issued separately and when their use iswarranted, their substitutionfor the M3 fuze mustbe made in the field.

7. COMPLETE ROUNDS.

The components - shell body, filling, fuze, propelling charge and ig-nition charge - are assembled into a complete round. The completeround is coated with a rust preventive and then inserted in a water-proofed cylinfuical carton, the joint of which is sealed with non-hydroscopic adtresive tape. Two such rounds are than packed in awooden box.

10. TRAINING SHELL.

The training shell (Plate 9) ls a component of the Mortar, Sub-caliber,3-inch, M3 (C8-1-20) and is listed in this catalog for informationonly.

11. SHIPPING DATA.

The number of containers, or items, per vehicle is limited by theweight carrying capacity or by the cubical capacity of the vehicle.Actual safe capacity may vary with the condition of the vehicle, theroads to be traversed, the type of material camied, current regu-lations in regard to freight car loading, or the urgency of the situ-ation. The following data are estimates only:

COMPLETE ROUND SHELL MARKING

The ammunition listed in this catalog is marked in such a way as toprovide positive identification. The shells are painted primarj.J.y for rustprevention, and use is made of di.fferent colors to distinguish betweenclasses. Markings are of distinctive colors with symbols of filling anduse stenciled on shells and one or two bands of same color around theshells. The color code is as follows:

High Explosive (Hn): Ol-ive drab body color with yeltow markings.

Chemical filling: BIue-gray body color with

a. Green Markings indicating a casualty type agent

(1) A single green band around the shell indicates a non-persistent casualty agent.

(2) Two green bands around the shell j.ndicate a persistentcasualty agent.

b. Red Markings indicating a harassing agent (one redband).

c. Yellow Markings indicating screening smokes (one yellowband)

d. Purple Marking indicating an incendiary agent.

Practice: Blue body with white markings.

Dummy or Drill: Black body with white markings.

The mortar shells are further identified by the following informationstenciled on the shel,l bodv:

Two diagonally opposite corners are coated on three contiguous faceswith an insignia blue color in the form of a triangle on each face. Thisidentifies the Service.

The chemical filling is identiJied by painting one or two t/Z-tncnstripes in the appropriate color on a blue-gray backgrorrnd on two con-tiguous faces at a corner between an end and a side. The stripes arehorizontal and meet at the corner. The filling of the shell is identified,also, in the stenciled information on the box.

Stenciled markings appear on one end, one side and the top. h theupper two-thirds of one end and in I/z-jnch letters the following irdor-mation is stenciled:
