Thesis Title : Removal of Arsenic from Water Environment by New Adsorbent. (Removal of Iron,
bacteria, virus, selenium also studied)
A new low-cost adsorbent named as CalSiCo, having high arsenic uptake capacity, was developed in the
Environmental Engineering Laboratory at IIT Kharagpur, India. To evaluate its capacity to adsorb arsenic under
different conditions was done using synthetic As(III) and As(V) solutions as well as real sample. The experiments
reported in this thesis were conducted in four phases: (i) batch studies, (ii) column studies, (iii) desorption and
regeneration studies, and (iv) instrumental studies. Apart from kinetic and isotherm studies, effect of different
parameter like, pH, adsorbent dose, size, presence of chloride, sulphate, nitrate, calcium, magnesium and iron
were studied. Effect of anionic ligands such as EDTA, fluoride and phosphate on the removal of As(III) and As(V)
was also studied. Desorption and regeneration studies were conducted to investigate the possibility of reuse of
spent adsorbent. Instrumental studies like infrared spectroscopy (IR), energy dispersion analysis by X-rays
(EDAX), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) studies for raw, arsenic adsorbed and desorbed materials were
carried out to confirm the presence of arsenic on the adsorbent surface and to find out the possible mechanism of
adsorption. CalSiCo was evaluated for its efficiency in removing arsenic in the actual field situation. It clearly
demonstrates that CalSiCo can be used as a filter media for removing arsenic from ground water in arsenic-
affected areas of West Bengal, India and Bangladesh. A 20-liter capacity home water purifier for arsenic was
