IMAGINE BATH(Second Year)

(Team Work Project)

Spring, 20151 WEEK

“Imagine Bath” is a RIBA competition calling for ideas for the future of the city of Bath. The ideas can be anything: from a public space, new infrastructure, to an event.

The University of Bath’s Architecture department organised the event “Vertical Studio” to encourage groups of architecture students from different years to work together on the “Imagine Bath” project. Our group, which consisted of two first year and two second year students, placed first in the competition.

A New Perspective

Page 14: CV and Work Samples Hanyuan Zhang

A series of follies to explore the idea of chronology and facilitate new perspectives; expanding not only Bath’s borders but also its identity.

Generally perceived as small and congested, Bath also has issues allowing the past and future to coexist. The latter is often seen as threatening the heritage of the city. These follies, a series of oxidised metallic installations, would enable people to visualize the rich patrimony of Bath from new perspectives. The city would no longer be limited to its centre as the follies are carefully integrated with surrounding

The city would no longer be limited to its centre as the follies are carefully integrated with surrounding

hills, becoming part of the landscape. The inimitable views provided are complimented by a unified architectural form. The modern and historic architectural styles: Roman, Medieval, Georgian and Victorian, are brought together to create five similar yet unique follies echoing both past and present. A sixth folly representing the future is more complex in its interior, but resonates the same message. Located in a zone of possible future development, an island in the river, it waits to become one with the city.

A change in perspective could inspire a new era for Bath. These installations engage not only tourists but most importantly citizens of all ages. Guided by

this path, time could be spent exploring Bath’s underrecognized countryside and the carefully selected views available. A coffee can be enjoyed subsequently at the futuristic installation whilst admiring its atypical architecture and meditating on the future of Bath. Through this journey, the city could therefore transmit a new message: understanding the past is to expediate the future.

Imagine a Bath which has overcome stereotypes. Imagine a city no longer defined by what it used to be, but keeping that in mind, inspired by what it could become. Imagine a city driven by innovation. Imagine an brave Bath, a bigger Bath, a better Bath.
