As the last full month of the 2016-17 school year, May represents the completion of a
year’s worth of hard work in striving to reach individual and school goals and ambitions.
For the Class of 2017, this month is both an ending of a foundational journey through the
halls and classrooms of Cuyahoga Heights Schools and a beginning of what will be an
exciting life-long adventure of adulthood. As I reflect on the winding road of this school
year, I find myself celebrating the great accomplishments of our students and staff as I
did at this time last year. My message is the same...We are worth celebrating!
What am I celebrating?
The Class of 2017 will leave us soon as the newest group of alumni to venture off
into the “real” world...this is worth celebrating.
8th graders and 5th graders will soon join our high school and middle school
families...this is worth celebrating.
Our school was selected as a 2017 Silver Medal School by US News & World
Report, rank 79th out of 886 schools in Ohio and the top 9% nationally...this is
worth celebrating.
Our outstanding music program was recognized by the National Association of
Music Merchants Foundation as a Top-100 “Best Music Communities for Music
Education” in the Nation for the 12th consecutive year...this is worth celebrating.
Newsweek named CHHS as one of the country’s top 500 schools in the category
of America's Top High Schools 2016: Beating the Odds out of 16,000 eligible
schools.
In 2017, the Cuyahoga Heights Schools was named one of the State of Ohio’s Top
25 Most Beautiful Schools, according to the ratings agency Aceable...this is worth
celebrating.
Our students continue to compete and excel in state level competition in athletics,
academics and the arts...this is worth celebrating.
Our students and staff have worked tirelessly to prepare for state and AP testing
because they want to be the best...this is worth celebrating.
Our school is part of a supportive and proud community...this is worth celebrating.
As you proceed through the month of May, take time to acknowledge and celebrate the
many accomplishments of your student, school, and community. We have much for
which to be grateful. Have a great month!

Students in Grades 10–12 who meet the requirements for membership outlined by their
school’s chapter are eligible to be invited for membership. Each chapter is required to
publish its qualifications for membership, which is based on the four pillars of NHS:
Scholarship - Per national guidelines, at a minimum, students must have a cumulative
GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale, or equivalent standard of excellence. (Each school chapter is
allowed to require a higher cumulative GPA—CHHS is 3.30).
Service - This involves voluntary contributions made by a student to the school or
community, done without compensation.
Leadership - Student leaders are those who are resourceful, good problem solvers, and
idea contributors. Leadership experiences can be drawn from school or community
activities while working with or for others.
Character - The student of good character is cooperative; demonstrates high standards
of honesty and reliability; shows courtesy, concern, and respect for others; and
generally maintains a clean disciplinary record.
On Monday, May 1, CHHS inducted the NHS Class of 2017 in a ceremony held in the
Auditorium. Congratulations to the following students on their induction:
Lauren Adamo Bernadette Menkhaus
Meghan Bowden Abigayle Pazey
Breana D’Ambrosi Megan Pech
Jennifer Grabel Alexandra Pignatiello
Luke Hopkins Victoria Santiago
Tyler Hughes Jordan Sturgill

As an NHS member, students can get ready for whatever comes their way after high school.
To help prepare them for college and their career, they’ll have exclusive access to robust
tools and resources:
Leadership development, motivation, and inspiration gained through their own
chapter’s work, at three LEAD Conferences in various locations each year, or at
NHS State Summits
Access to innovative leadership cultivation and career exploration
Service projects, both by the chapter and individually, allowing members to build
teamwork capabilities, hone project management aptitude, and make friends—all
valuable life skills
Unique member-only college admission resources, integrating web and social media
platforms
Help with financing college education through a members-only scholarship search
tool and the NHS Scholarship program, which, since its establishment in 1946, has
awarded more than 16,000 scholarships totaling more than $12 million to seniors who
best reflect the values of NHS

Students in Grades 6–9 who meet the requirements for membership outlined by their school’s chapter are
eligible to be invited for membership. Students must be in their second semester of Sixth Grade for
consideration. Ninth Grade students are only eligible for inclusion in NJHS if they attend a middle-level
school. Ninth grade students in a traditional 9-12 high school are not eligible for NJHS membership. Each chapter is required to publish its qualifications for membership, which is based on the five pillars of
NJHS:
Scholarship - Per national guidelines, at a minimum, students must have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 on
a 4.0 scale, or equivalent standard of excellence. (Each school chapter is allowed to require a higher
cumulative GPA—Cuyahoga Heights is a 3.00).
Service - This involves voluntary contributions made by a student to the school or community, done
without compensation.
Leadership - Student leaders are those who are resourceful, good problem solvers, and idea
contributors. Leadership experiences can be drawn from school or community activities while
working with or for others.
Character - The student of good character is cooperative; demonstrates high standards of honesty and
reliability; shows courtesy, concern, and respect for others; and generally maintains a clean disciplinary record.
Citizenship - The student who demonstrates citizenship understands the importance of civic
engagement; has a high regard for freedom and justice; respects the U.S. form of government (a
representative democracy); respects the law for all citizens at the local, state, and federal levels; and
demonstrates mature participation and responsibility in activities such as scouting, community
organizations, or school clubs.
On Monday, May 1, CHMS inducted the NJHS Class of 2017 in a ceremony held in the Auditorium.
Congratulations to the following students on their induction:

Leadership development, motivation, and inspiration gained through their own chapter’s work,
at three LEAD conferences in various locations each year, or at NJHS State Summits

Join Student Council in 2017-18!
Students who were not elected to class officer positions or who simply want to be
involved in leadership and service activities should consider joining Student Council
which is available to both middle school or high school students.
Student Council helps share students' ideas, interests, and concerns with teachers and
school principals. They often also help raise funds for school-wide activities, including
social events, community projects, helping people in need and school reform.
2017-18 high school students can pick up applications in the high school office or by
seeing each groups respective advisor. Interested 2017-18 middle school students should
see Mrs. Studier for details.
