Customs Receipts Showing Increase U.S. Customs collections in the Southwest during the fiscal third quarter (April-June) registered a 23 per cent increase over 1976, according to the Houston Regional Customs Office. Total for the 1977 quarter was $102,245,077 compared tO $83,275,18 last year. Houston, of course, recorded the largest amountcollected with a total of $47,037,768, which was a substantial 15 per cent over the same period the previous year. Nationally, total customs collections were up 15 per cent for the quarter, amounting to $1,541,368,210. Hellenic Orders ShipsHellenic Lines Limited has placed an order with Sasebo
Heavy Industries Co. Ltd. of Japan for three Roll-on/Roll-off and Container Carriers with an option for a furthersister vessel.
The vessels, to be constructed in Sasebo, will have thefollowing main characteristics: 190.5 meters long by 28.5meters broad by 20.8 meters deep, with a total of 3100running meters yielding a capacity of 250 x 40 ft. (12 meter)trailers or 1100 containers of 20 x 8 x 8 feet and in additionhoistable car-decks allow the carriage of 450 American cars.
The vessels will perform their cargo carriage at 20.3knots. Furthermore, the vessels are equipped with 4 twinsets of flush hatchcovers that will when conditions allow,enable the use of shore-based gantry cranes for fastercontainer operations.
In any case, the vessels will be able to discharge and load afull and complete cargo of trailers/containers/carslheavy~lifts within 24 hours. This performance is made possible bythe vessels’ 7 meter wide stern slewing ramp of 160 tonscapacity and its internal equipment of 1 ramp and 3elevators.

New dock facilities (at left) are being constructed at Warren Petroleum Company’s marineterminal on the Houston Ship Channel as part of a multi-million dollar expansion of the company’snatural gas liquids complex. About 1.6 million cubic yards of material is being dredged from thechannel and placed behind levees to accommodate the dock which will be capable of berthing80,000 cubic meter refrigerated ships. Nick Kouloumoundras, 36, with 16 years at sea aboard Greek and American ships is shown herewith one of his most prized possessions, a 14 Ibs. 39" high by 52" long replica of an old sailingvessel which he made from over 3,000 popsicle sticks and over 1,500 feet of fishing string. The shipwas six months in the making with Nick working three to four hours a day on the model. Nick isfrom the city of Kardamela, on the Greek Island of Chios, one of the richest islands and home ofseveral ship owners. He is presently working as a machinist at Harrisburg Machine Company.
