FIRST READING—Isaiah 50:5-9aThe Lord GOD opens my ear that I may hear; and I have not rebelled, have not turned back. I gave my back to those who beat me, my cheeks to those who plucked my beard; my face I did not shield from buffets and spitting.

The Lord GOD is my help, therefore I am not disgraced;I have set my face like flint, knowing that I shall not be put to shame. He is near who upholds my right; if anyone wishes to oppose me, let us appear together. Who disputes my right?Let that man confront me. See, the Lord GOD is my help;who will prove me wrong?

SECOND READING—James 2:14-18What good is it, my brothers and sisters, if someone says he has faith but does not have works? Can that faith save him? If a brother or sister has nothing to wear and has no food for the day, and one of you says to them, “Go in peace, keep warm, and eat well, ” but you do not give them the necessities of the body, what good is it? So also faith of itself,if it does not have works, is dead.

Indeed someone might say, “You have faith and I have works.” Demonstrate your faith to me without works, and I will demonstrate my faith to you from my works.

GOSPEL— Mark 8:27-35

Jesus and his disciples set out for the villages of Caesarea Philippi. Along the way he

asked his disciples, “Who do people say that I am?” They said in reply, “John the Baptist,

others Elijah, still others one of the prophets.” And he asked them, “But who do you say

that I am?” Peter said to him in reply, “You are the Christ.” Then he warned them not to

tell anyone about him.

He began to teach them that the Son of Man must suffer greatly and be rejected by the

elders, the chief priests, and the scribes, and be killed, and rise after three days. He spoke

this openly. Then Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him. At this he turned around

and, looking at his disciples, rebuked Peter and said, “Get behind me, Satan. You are

thinking not as God does, but as human beings do.”

He summoned the crowd with his disciples and said to them,

“Whoever wishes to come after me must deny himself, take up his cross, and follow me.

For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake

and that of the gospel will save it.”

THE NICENE CREEDI believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible.

I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God, born of the Father before all ages. God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father; through him all things were made. For us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven, and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate, he suffered death and was buried, and rose again on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets.

I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church. I confess one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen.

A MESSAGE FROM FATHER JAY

eptember 1, 2021 is a day of victory for pre-born babes whose tender hearts can beat in peace under the Texas Heartbeat Act. The Heartbeat Act protects human life in one our most vulnerable stages of development by making it illegal to end the life of a little six-week-old or older. This is a historic defense of women from dealing with the awful effects of ending life in their wombs and upholds the right to life of our youngest sons and daughters.

The Texas defense of life and motherhood agrees with Jesus Christ’s teachings in his church: “Since the first century the Church has affirmed the moral evil of every procured abortion. This teaching has not changed and remains unchangeable. Direct abortion, that is to say, abortion willed either as an end or a means, is gravely contrary to the moral law: You shall not kill the embryo by abortion and shall not cause the newborn to perish. God, the Lord of life, has entrusted to men the noble mission of safeguarding life, and men must carry it out in a manner worthy of themselves. Life must be protected with the utmost care from the moment of conception: abortion and infanticide are abominable crimes” (Catechism of the Catholic Church # 2271).

Someone I am blessed to know, and have interviewed on my Exploring Catholicism program, is pro-life leader SBA List President Marjorie Dannenfelser. She wrote celebrating this Texas Heartbeat Law, “The American people are eager to humanize our extreme, outdated abortion laws. This law reflects the scientific reality that unborn children are human beings, with beating hearts at six weeks.”

Ms. Dannenfelser would go on to ask for prayers and support for the next step of Pro-Life march in Mississippi: a case called Dobbs v. Jackson’s Women Health Organization, that the U.S. Supreme Court will hear. Marjorie said “We are hopeful that [they] will take the opportunity to listen to ‘scientific’ reasoning to overturn elements of Roe v. Wade, as the high court has agreed to hear a challenge to a Mississippi law banning abortions after 15 weeks of gestation”.

Let us celebrate our victory by prayer, fasting and acting for the defense of women and the lives of pre-borns.

ou may be familiar with Amen to Action packing a million

meals on the day after Thanksgiving. It was an initiative started

by Bishop Zubik in the hope of creating an ecumenical event to serve

people in our diocese suffering from food insecurities.

COVID has made gathering the 4,000 people needed to put on the

event no longer possible. But there are more people who suffer from

food insecurities now than before the pandemic started in March 2020.

Last year, the Great Grouping put on a mini Amen to Action as a

pilot program for the main Amen to Action event. As a result of our

efforts, this year’s Amen to Action will happen on every Saturday in

November at ten different sites, strategically located throughout the

diocese at Catholic churches, North Catholic High School, and other

Christian denomination locations. The millionth meal will be packed on

the day after Thanksgiving at Sacred Heart Church in Shadyside.

With November right around the corner, your help is needed! Please

take part in one of the packing events around the city. To see where

the Amen to Action packing events are held and when, please visit

amentoaction.org and sign up to help pack one million meals in

November. Space is limited at each location to keep social distance

between packers, so sign up early to secure your spot. If you are

unable to attend an Amen to Action event, but would like to make a

donation, please visit amentoaction.org to make your tax deductible

Reports indicate that over 2,000 people have died and thousands of homes have been destroyed. This devastation further impacts the Haitian community as they are still rebuilding following the major earthquake of 2010. The weekend of September 19 we will hold a second collection to support the Bishops Emergency Disaster Fund. This fund serves to support the pastoral and reconstruction efforts of the Church through the local agencies of Catholic Relief Services and Catholic Charities USA in responding to immediate needs around the globe.
