2. RESEARCH
2.1 Key research interests
My research interests are around socio-spatial inequalities and inequities in health, medicine usage
and the provision of health and social care. I also have a particular interest in research around lay and
professional perceptions, knowledge and understandings of health, healthcare, medicines and risk,
and how these perceptions vary spatially and by socio-cultural group. In addition, given my
experience in both qualitative and quantitative research, I have an interest in research which seeks to
utilise the benefits of a pluralistic and multi-disciplinary approach.
2.2 Research experience
I have considerable experience in conducting and managing all aspects of both qualitative and
quantitative research projects. This includes writing research proposals, obtaining external peer-
reviewed funding, managing a research team, facilitating access to data sets or study participants, data
collection, synthesis and analysis, and dissemination in the form of official reports, conferences and
peer reviewed publications. In qualitative research projects I have used semi-structured and depth
interviews, focus groups, nominal group technique, ethnographic methods and community
development approaches. In quantitative research projects, I have used postal and telephone
questionnaire surveys, the Delphi technique and secondary cross-sectional data analysis.

Chair, Faculty Health Sciences Nursing Research Grant Assessment Committee (2009 - )
