Research Strategy The underlying theme governing the research activities of the Polymer Research Group incorporates the synthesis, modification (physical and/or chemical), formulation, characterisation and application of homopolymers, copolymers, composites and blends. Thus, each polymer, composite or blend is designed to meet specific objectives and applications. The research is targeted, encompassing fundamental and developmental aspects and attributes. Clearly, such studies have an impact on the science and technology of plastics, cosmetics, surface coatings, inks, substrates modification, printing and packaging, sensor assembly, membranes, transport phenomena, environment monitoring-coloured effluent treatments, automotive structures bi-liquid foams, anticorrosion coatings, encapsulation technologies and associated disciplines. Expertise possessed by members working in the group supervised by Professor J.T.Guthrie means that work is currently being undertaken on several high potential, industrially funded research programmes. The themes include natural-polymer recycling, filtration assemblies based on membranes derived through latent solvency, as applied to polymeric components, reactive coating formulations for textiles, strategies for biosensor development and the characterisation of copolymers, composites and blends through their solid state and their melt properties. Liquid packaging research, studies of cold-seal release coatings, surface interactions and relevance to formulation, studies of dispersion stabilisation formulation development and formulation optimisation, protective coatings, stabilised coatings and so on.
