Encourage wide reading of poems by : John Agard,Benjamin Zephania, Imtiaz Dharker, Maya Angelou. Discuss the poems with your child and the effects of words and phrases. Encourage your child to think about more than one meaning. Help to secure understanding of the P.E.E chain as a method of discussing poetry. Aid your child in learning the spellings of poetic techniques. Continue to use the literacy websites to improve spelling and punctuation skills. Map Skills – An introduction to symbols, four and six figure grid references, height and how to use a range of maps. Festivals – A study of major UK festivals such as Glastonbury, by using map skills gained above

Use any map at home (such as a road atlas) to practice directions, symbols, grid references and identifying settlements. Pupils can research locations of other major music festivals.

Settlement (Where do we live)

A study of types of settlement and why those settlements grew over time. A study of the characteristics of zones within towns and cities

Pupils can use publications such as the Evening Telegraph Property Guide to collect information on characteristics of each housing zone, especially prices.

Exploring Britain

A study into the physical and human geography of Britain including major rivers, mountains, companies and people

Pupils can use an atlas at home or programmes such as Google Earth to learn main physical features of Britain such as rivers and mountains.

Weather & Climate

A study of key characteristics of the Weather, including the Water Cycle and why it rains. An investigation into how we record and measure the weather.

Pupils can practice recording aspects of the weather at home through observation and watch TV weather forecasts.

Living World – Ecosystems

A study of various world ecosystems including deserts, rainforests and the Mediterranean.

Pupils can watch TV programmes (documentary style) that concern life in deserts, the Poles, rainforests and other climate zones.

Africa

A study of the key physical and human characteristics of Africa, including looking at levels of economic development.

Pupils can use atlases, the internet etc. to learn the key African nations and their main human and physical characteristics. They can watch TV programmes that show life in Africa, especially those which highlight characteristics of developing nations.

This unit will assess and develop basic historical skills such as; identifying bias, categorising sources, dating, chronology and deductive reasoning.

Contenders to the Throne

The Battle of Hastings

This unit will focus on 1066 and will establish what Medieval England was like, why there was a succession crisis in 1066 and the events that led up to Hastings. There will be a substantial assessed piece of work that looks at the causes of William’s victory.

Create a presentation about Harold Godwinson, William of Normandy or Harald Hardraada and explain why they should be king in 1066. Research the Battle of Hastings and explain the reasons for William’s victory. William’s England

The third unit will look at what William did when he took control of England. It will explain how he used the Domesday book and feudal system to establish control. There will also be an independent investigation into the development of castles during this period.

Medieval England

Unit four will consider many of the key events and changes during the Medieval period. Topics include Thomas Becket, Magna Carta, and the Peasants Revolt.

The penultimate unit of Year 7 will investigate the Crusades. It will cover the entire crusading movement, from its origins to the impact it had on western culture.

The Black Death

Constructing History

The final unit will look at the Black Death and the impact it had on Medieval Europe. Students will create a guide that advises people about the plague and how to deal with it.
