New Program Title Medical Office Administration
State Program Code
Initiator Bettie Wright
Desired starting term Fall 2013
Degree/Certificate AAS
Program Description: (Attach program outcomes and initial draft curriculum)
This program is for those who wish to work in the healthcare field but are not interested in direct
patient care. An associate of applied science in Medical Office Administration can prepare you
for administrative jobs in physician offices, medical clinics, or medical centers and hospitals. In
these positions, you would be responsible for assisting doctors, physicians and surgeons with
clerical work. Common duties might include scheduling, answering phones, deciphering
insurance regulations, coding, billing, transcribing medical documents, handling payroll,
managing patient records, writing reports and preparing professional correspondence. Program
outcomes are attached.
Department/Division for new Program: Office Technology area of the Business Department
Anticipated Need for program (district/region): (Can attach Labor Management Information -
LMI- form in this section) (include labor market data, feedback from potential analysis, survey
data, industry communications, etc.)
2010 employment is estimated to be much larger than the statewide average. This occupation is
expected to grow at a much faster rate than the statewide average. Total job openings are
projected to be much higher than the statewide average. (Olmis website, 9/14/2012). More
information is attached. Jobs in this field in Douglas County are projected to grow by 29.6%
between 2010 and 2020.
Potential interest in program (include recruitment techniques, marketing to be done,
demographics to focus on, estimated enrollment for year 1 and 2. Interest in this stand-alone
AAS degree program in Medical Office Administration should be at least as good as the AMA
option off the Administrative Assistant program was. We predict that it will be better because
we are strengthening coursework and creating pathways between it and two one-year certificate
programs. Perhaps, 40 students enrolled in this program first and second year.
Estimated Financial Impact (include budget for years 1 and 2, potential revenue, potential
promotional funding, general fund requirements, equipment needs, facility/space requirements,
etc.) Because this new standalone program more or less replaces a similar existing "option,"
there should be no increases in fund requirements unless enrollment increases. Any increase in
funding need will be directly related to increased enrollment.

New Program Title Front Office Medical Assistant
State Program Code
Initiator Bettie Wright
Desired starting term Fall 2013
Degree/Certificate 1-year Certificate
Program Description: (Attach program outcomes and initial draft curriculum)
This program is designed primarily for the person with little or no previous experience. The
focus is on the developing the necessary skills to function as entry-level front office medical
assistants or medical office suppose personnel. Specific duties will often vary from office to
office due to office size, location, and specialty, but duties may include answering telephone
calls, scheduling appointments, greeting incoming patients, preparing new and established
patient records, and possibly posting charges, copays, and patient payments. Program outcomes
are attached.
(www.olmis.org, 9/14/2012)
More information is attached. There is no direct OLMIS category for this occupation. These
workers would perform lower-level secretarial tasks; therefore, I used the OLMIS "Medical
Secretary" information. I have also attached information from the OLMIS "Receptionists and
Information Clerks" category as well. The jobs highlighted in red are the ones that a Front
Office Medical Assistant would be qualified to apply for. Employment in Douglas County for
this field from 2010 to 2020 is expected to increase 29.6% .
Potential interest in program (include recruitment techniques, marketing to be done,
demographics to focus on, estimated enrollment for year 1 and 2. This is a one-year certificate
program. We expect about 20 to 25 students the first year. Recruitment techniques would be to
advertise in the schedule of classes, send information to Umpqua Training and Employment, and
perhaps advertise on radio or TV depending on budget. Demographic to focus on is varied--can
be young or old, male or female, but mostly, returning students with little or no previous college
education who have an interest in the medical field.
Page 20
UCC NEW CREDIT PROGRAM CONCEPT FORM – page 2 of 2
Estimated Financial Impact (include budget for years 1 and 2, potential revenue, potential
promotional funding, general fund requirements, equipment needs, facility/space requirements,
etc.) Costs for this program are offset by the recent removal of the Clinical Medical Assistant 1-
year certificate from the Business Department general fund. There should be no increase in
cost.
Faculty needs (FT/PT, number, qualifications, ability to recruit)
Full-time and adjunct faculty will need to have previous medical office experience. We have a
good, existing pool of medical adjunct faculty.
