This is a curriculum brochure that I created for a graduate school class. The concept was to design something that a school could provide to parents that showcased the learning philosophy and curriculum.

Curriculum,  Instruction,  and  Assessment

Children  enter  ISM  as  capable  and  competent  beings  and  are  provided  with  opportunities  to  build  upon  their  prior  knowledge  and  make  meaningful  connections  with  new  knowledge.    The  emergent-‐negotiated  curriculum  allows  students  to  have  a  say  in  their  learning.  Teachers  act  as  a  guide,  observer,  investigator  and  co-‐collaborator.  Teachers  set  up  provocations  that  allow  students  to  explore  their  environment  and  further  their  concepts  in  math,  literacy,  science,  social  skills,  communication,  research  and  questioning,  physical  development,  music,  and  self-‐management.

Philosophy    ISM  Preschool  believes  in  a  play-‐based  curriculum.  It  is  through  play  that  children  learn  about  our  world.  Research  shows  play  helps  children  learn  creativity.  They  learn  about  risk  taking  and  increase  their  confidence.  Our  program  aims  to  develop  the  skills  necessary  to  be  a  lifelong  learner.  We  weave  our  six-‐transdisciplinary  skills  through  all  of  our  learning.  ISM  Preschool  runs  an  emergent  curriculum;  this  means  the  teachers  listen  to  the  ideas  and  interests  of  the  children,  and  then  guide  them  to  inquire  into  these  interests  while  focusing  on  the  development  of  the  transdisciplinary  skills.

Teachers  use  many  forms  of  instruction:  whole  group,  small  group,  individual,  direct,  indirect,  interactive,  and  experimental.  Teachers  work  with  each  student  at  his  or  her  level.    Teachers  extend  the  learning  by  making  observations,  asking  questions,  and  providing  guidance  for  all  students.

Teachers  observe  students,  write  down  anecdotal  notes,  take  pictures  of  students  during  learning  experiences,  record  conversations  between  students  and/or  teachers,  and  create  learning  journals  for  each  child.  The  learning  journals  include  emergent  curriculum  documentation,  TD  Skill  pages,  student  work  samples,  and  other  pieces  of  documentation.
