actions to prevent sexual violence in Minnesota.

A few first steps against sexual violence

The prevention of sexual violence in Minnesota is one of my top priorities. As a Ramsey County commissioner I have many responsibilities, so perhaps you wonder whether I've had a personal experience that put sexual violence prevention at the top of my agenda. I'd have to answer yes -- but the details of that experience might surprise you. Essentially, I woke up.

Two years ago I attended a National Association of County Organizations conference in Washington D.C., where I heard a powerful presentation by Cordelia Anderson, a sexual violence prevention consultant from Minnesota. Her presentation brought to my attention the normalization of sexual violence and the losses Minnesotans suffer as a result. More importantly, I realized that sexual violence is preventable.

As a man, an elected official, a community member, a husband and a father, I woke up to a simple question: Why are so many of our citizens willing to perpetrate sexual violence on one another?

I learned that environment matters. We raise our children in a culture that commodifies and normalizes sexual exploitation and victimization.

My wife and I have been in the hotel and resort business in Minnesota for more than 60 years. I took over the operation of Cragun’s Resort in Brainerd from my dad, who started it in 1940 with just eight cabins on Gull Lake. We’ve built a world-class, year-round resort by treating our guests like friends and family. We’re proud to have received recognition for our operation from the Audubon Society (for our Sanctuary Golf Course) and (add other recognitions?) But I never expected to be named a Champion by the Minnesota Coalition Against Sexual Assault and those working to prevent sexual violence in Minnesota.

This past spring, we heard from a potential conference sponsor, the Minnesota Men’s Action Network, an organization that focuses on the role of men in the prevention of sexual and domestic violence. Chuck Derry called to say that while they had planned to hold their October conference at Cragun’s, now they could not. The MN Men’s Action Network, he explained, had joined a growing number of individuals and organizations that subscribe to a “Clean Hotels” policy. They would no longer house their people or events in hotels that offer in-room, pay-per-view pornography as part of the hotel amenities.

I saw his point and said, “Give us a week.”

Post Summit Roundtables These five roundtables held in response to theSummit also demonstrated a significant newcollaboration between MNCASA and the Centerfor Integrative Leadership at the University ofMinnesota (CIL). The roundtables fit with MNCASA’s commitment toadvancing prevention and with CIL’s commitment toaddressing thorny societal issues – ones so central tothe common good that it drives us to reach acrosscommon boundaries to find answers.
