ECONOMYIndian Economy Grows at 6.7 per cent in 2008 - 09

The IndIan economy managed to dock a 6.7 per cent growth in 2008-09 despite the dismal performance of themanufacturing sector, according to official figures reIeased on May 29, 2009. A 5.8 per cent growth in the last quarter of thefiscal 2008-09 has put India among the top-most growing nations in the world. The GDP growth in the third quarter of 2008-09 has been revised to 5.8 per cent from 5.3 per cent estimated provisionally. However, compared to the previous fiscal2007-08, economic growth did exhibit a slow-down, triggered by sluggish manufacturing due to slackening demand. In fact,a sharp decline in demand overseas has led to shrinking of exports since October 2008. For the entire fiscal, manufacturinggrew by just 2.4 per cent against 8.2 per cent in 2007-08. Agriculture posted 1.6 per cent growth in 2008-09 against 4.9 percent in 2007-08. Only mining and quarrying, and community, social and personal services showed improved perrformancein 2008-09 over the previous fiscal 2007-08.Per Capita Income rises to Rs. 3,000 per month

The per capita monthly income of an average Indian has, for the first time, crossed the Rs. 3,000 mark on current pricelevels, as reported on May 29, 2009. The per capita figures may look a bit less impressive when adjusted for inflation. TheCentral Statistical Organisation (CSO) estimates showed that when adjusted for inflation, the per capita income reached onlyRs. 25,494 against Rs. 25,661 per annum estimated in February 2009. However, the real cause for worry for the Governmentwould come from the manufacturing sector, which continued to be hammered, registering a contraction of 1.4 per cent afterhaving clocked 0.9 per cent growth in previous three quarters.
