All sets of slides refer to the key messages from ‘Words Up’ training - please ensure you familiarise yourself with these messages. https://highlandliteracy.com/words-up-key-messages/ Each set of slides has been written as a 'discussion guide’ to encourage managers, teachers & practitioners to reflect, discuss and share their thoughts/knowledge around maths in their setting/classroom. Through discussion, teams will be encouraged to identify small changes that they can make to improve their practice/environment/engage learners and their families. As you work through the slides, please ensure you allow time for reflections, discussion and next steps. Prior to training session: ● Print out this handout to have as a guide ● PRINT or have available ‘ Words Up’ Key Messages for your age/stage. It is helpful for participants to have access to a paper copy for reference and to prompt discussions. Available from: https://highlandliteracy.com/words-up-key-messages/ ● Paper & pens for staff to share ideas and record their reflections. Following training: ● Take some time to explore websites/ additional reading.

Click on the explorify link. https://explorify.wellcome.ac.uk/ You do not need to log on, just scroll down to the bottom. There is an example of a zoom in / zoom out activity, an odd one out activity and a video clip activity. Spend a few minutes looking at each and discussing how you can transfer the ideas here to your own setting. What opportunities are there for mathematical learning?
Note regarding the images used - Playing with shapes and making patterns all help lay foundations for children to find future patterns in data and number and become more spatially aware.
Nurseries are a unique position where they are promoting these skills through open ended play. How can we celebrate these skills outdoors, indoors and within P1? Curiosity is inquiring, observing research. Open-mindedness - listen, think differently, explore. Imagination - have ideas, select from the best and invent. Problem Solving - Identify, respond and present solutions.
