STEWARDSHIP REFLECTIONS

“If it does not please you to serve the Lord, decide today whom you will serve. As for me and my household, we will serve the Lord.” JOSHUA 24:15 When we commit to serve the Lord, we must be willing to be-come a partner in the work of the Lord. A partner is a person who invests their time, talent and treasure. If we say we serve God, we must actually do something and not merely talk about it!

Most Holy Trinity School was again overwhelmed by your gen-erosity in providing supplies for the students. Two vans packed with much needed supplies were delivered to the school and the teachers were thrilled. The amount of items donated actually exceeded the donations from last year!

DYNAMIC CATHOLIC BULLETIN REFLECTIONS

Lectio Divina. The Compendium identifies Sacred Scripture as the “fount of the spiritual life” (24). How often do you prayer-fully reflect on the Scriptures? Lectio Divina is one way to deepen your spirituality. Lectio Divina is a prayerful reflection on Scripture through reading, meditation, prayer, and contem-plation. It is a way of discerning God’s will for your life and deepening your relationship with him. Was there a word or phrase in today’s reading that stood out for you? What does this word or phrase mean for your life? Archstl.org/dynamic

If you are in need of healing prayer for an emotional, physical or spiritual need, prayer will be offered by appointment on Wednesday, September 2nd, from 7:00 - 9:00 p.m. at the Car-dinal Rigali Center in the Sr. Antona Ebo Room. The keynote speaker will be Dr. Charmaine Yoest, President and CEO of Americans United for Life, the legal architects of the pro-life movement. Dr. Yoest will offer insight into the success of the tidal wave of pro-life laws enacted since 2011-laws which have the big abor-tion industry closing their doors at unprecedented rates. The booths open at 9:00 a.m., followed by Mass, luncheon and keynote address and workshops. Please call 792-7555 or visit the website at archstl.org/respectlife/page/annual-respect-life-convention for details and to register.

However, at the rec-ommendation of Archbishop Carlson, the MCC has secured Kenrick-Glennon Seminary theologian Dr. Lawrence Feingold as the new keynote speaker. His presentation will include a reflection on our Church today, fifty years after the closing of the Second Vatican Council. For more information and to reg-ister visit www.mocatholic.org

ADULT FAITH FORMATION AROUND THE COMMUNITY

REFLECTING ON GOD’S WORD “If it does not please you to serve the Lord,” Joshua enjoins the tribes of Israel at Shechem, “decide today whom you will serve.” And the people answered: “Far be it from us to for-sake the Lord to serve other gods,” going on to name the deeds the Lord had done for them (Joshua 24:15,16). Centuries later, after hearing Jesus call Himself bread to be eaten, descendants of those at Schechem said: “This saying is hard; who can accept it?” And they “no longer accompanied Him.” Jesus then asked the Twelve if they would leave too. Simon answered for all: “We have come to believe and are convinced you are the Holy One of God” (John 6:60,66,69). Our response is a simple but weighty Amen (meaning “So be it”). When the consecrated host is held up, accompanied by “The Body of Christ,” and the cup offered with “The Blood of Christ,” we are asked to put our faith on the line and say, “Amen.” Has familiarity bred contentment? Are we so used to this mystery that we rarely have a sense of awe or wonder? The first act of faith is believing that God is present in things as ordinary as this bread and wine. We believe that the bread and wine are changed into the Body and Blood of Christ. What is the change in us that should accompany receiving them? But of such stuff dreams are made—God’s dream of family, loving daughters and sons, gathered around a table to say “Amen,” then to live Communion in a world of broken bodies, shed blood, wounded hearts, and crushed spirits. When we say “Amen” to this mystery, who knows what might happen? ~James A. Wallace, C.Ss.R.
