Wind: Hold recyclables until the next pick up day if severe wind warnings are issued.
President’s Day, Feb. 17: The landfill and landfill transfer station is open 7:15-11:30 a.m. All other stations are closed.
PLASTIC BAGS: Do not put plastic bags into recycling (either loose or a “bag full of bags”). NY state law requires stores to collect film plastics, including: plastic one-use grocery bags; newspaper bags, dry-cleaning, produce and bread bags, plastic overwrap from paper products (paper towels), and zipper type bags. Film plastic is stretchy, not crinkly. Collect plastic bags until you have a quantity, then return the “bag full of bags” to the store (look for a bin or box near the door).
The New York State Plastic Bag Ban Begins March 1 In an effort to cut down on the more than 23 billion plastic bags New Yorker’s use a
year, the Legislature passed the Plastic Bag Waste Reduction Law in 2019. Shop-pers should remember to bring durable, re-useable shopping bags with them to
the store. With a few exceptions, retailers will no longer be allowed to provide plastic one-use carryout bags to their customers. Bring Your Own Bag!
Fulton County residents with curbside re-cycling pick up should put loose singlestream recycling into a marked bin no larger than 35-gallons. (A standard
garbage can is 32-gallons). Bins must have a tight-fitting lid, to prevent litter.

Composting is Easy! Consider setting up a simple backyard compost pile for yard and food waste. Pick a spot, pile plant-based materials in a heap, and turn occasionally. Layer wet and dry organic ma-terials, such as grass clippings, fallen leaves, and kitchen scraps (avoid dairy and meat items), and let nature do the work. Add greens and browns in equal amounts to compost piles and turn occasionally. In dry weather, water the pile.
Labor Day, Sept. 7: The landfill and all transfer stations will be closed
Shredded Paper - The only exception to
the “No Plastic Bag” rule is shredded paper, from a paper shredder, which goes into a plas-tic bag. Small bags of shredded paper can go into the bin. Large bags should be placed on the ground next to the bin.
Computers and TVs – Fulton County residents can drop off old electronics (computer monitors, terminals, printers, etc) and televisions at the Department of Solid Waste, 847 Mud Rd., Johnstown, or the transfer station in their municipality. For more info, call the Recycling Info-Line at 518-736-5504.
Store leftovers in reusable containers instead of baggies, plastic wrap, or foil.
