Culture is the way we live. it is the clothes we wear , the food we eat , the languages we speak , the stories we tell and the ways we celebrate.

It is the way we show our imaginations through art , music and writing.

Bersuroh and Berjarum-jarum

When the grooms’ family visits the brides’ home to ask her hand in marriage.

Occurs on Thursday night or depends on malay dates like “Hari Gajah or Hari Madu”

“Berjarum-jarum” is when the grooms’ family came for the second time to discussion over important dates for future event ceremonies.

Majlis Hantaran Berian &Akad Nikah Presenting of wedding gifts that were requested

during Berjarum-jarum. Held at the Bride’s home or mosque. Wedding gifts for the bride are :-

1)Sirih Junjung/Al-quran – to lead the rest of the wedding gifts

2)Pembuka Mulut – presented with a ring along money value $100

3)Mas Kawin - presented with a ring along with money value of $300

4)Belanja Dapur/Hangus – presented with a money value of $1000-1500

5)Langkah Sungkai – presented with a money value of $1006)Langkah Dulang – this depends on the brides’ sister.7)Tanda Kasih - any kinds of gift that the groom wishes to

give.

The Bride will reply in a form of foods , fruits and a few wedding gifts as well.

“Akad Nikah” is based on the Islamic way to tie a knot between a man and a woman

Usually conduct by the Imam. 2 witnesses from both families(father or

Guardian) “Khutbah kahwin” is read by the imam

before reciting the Nikah Once Nikah is read by the groom,

responsible of the bride is no longer in the hands of her father but her husband.

Majlis Berbedak Its is a seven colored paste ceremony for

both bride and groom at respective home. The event must start by the bride side first

rather than the groom side. Things that are need for Majlis Berbedak

Malam Berinai/Berpacar Occurs the night before “majlis

Bersanding” Only close families attend the ceremony Ceremony starts with the bride/groom

parents applying a pinch of pacar(henna) on the palm of their hand

Majlis Bersanding

Usually occurs on Sunday morning This is the actual wedding day where the bride

and the groom will sit together at the wedding podium (Pelamin) for the guests to see.

Before the groom is led to the wedding podium(pelamin) he will first have to turn around in circle three times in which is lead by the imam before approaching the bride, this is called Pusing Naga.

once reaches at the wedding podium, the imam then put the grooms’ right hand on the brides’ forehead and recite “Allahu Akbar”

Adat Berbasuh Kaki

‘Adat Berbasuh Kaki’ – practice Puak Asli Belait,Tutong and also Bisaya.

Majlis Berambil-ambilan

Occurs at night right after “Majlis bersanding” The grooms’ side of the family would bring a little bit of food

to be served. This event is for the newly wed to once again bersanding

(enthronement) infront of close families only The couple would be teased as both fed each other the foods

that been served.

held at the grooms’ place after three days later after “majlis bersanding”

Usually occurs during night.

Bersuroh (Proposal) At the Nurul Iman Palace. Father of the bridegroom-to-be and his

entourage arrived for an audience with His Majesty the Sultan And Yang DiPertuan of Brunei Darussalam.

To ask for the hand of HRH Princess in marriage.

Membuka Gendang Jaga-Jaga (Opening Ceremony)

At Lapau (House of Parliment). Represented by a close relative. Ancient music on traditional

instruments and the firing of a 21 gun salute.

Such as Nakara, Gendang Labek, the Seruling, the Canang and two large gongs.

“Balai Pemanjangan” Lasted for 14 days.

Menerima Tanda Pertunangan DiRaja (Engagement)

Presented by one boy and one girl (9-10)

Dressed in traditional wedding attire. Engagement ring and gifts placed in 21

gangsa carried by 21 young men. 16 young men carrying a large candle

each. A 17 gun salute.

Menerima Berian and Mas kAhwin DiRaja (Dowry Ceremony)

Wedding gifts, consisting Jong Sarat, clothing and a wedding ring.

Dowry of $1000.00. 40 Janar by 40 foot soldiers.

Berbedak Wet paste onto the hands of

the bride-to-be/bridegroom-to-be.

7 different colours, using fourth index finger.

Parents, relatives and friends. End of the ceremony, a

special religious hymn called ‘Zikir Syarafil Anam’.

Akad Nikah (Islamic Marriage)

Usually taken place at the Mosque. Declared as husband and wife by the chief, Kadi. Chief Kadi conveyed his Khutbah Nikah. The bridegroom, bride and 2 witnesses from each

family are required to sign the marriage certificate.

Berinai or Berpacar

The Sultan and Yang Di Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam, sprinkling home-made perfume onto the palms of the bride.

Henna on the palms or finger tips of the wedded couple.

Similar to berbedak.

Naik Kahwin or Bersanding

Usually held at bride’s house. Ceremony of Bersiram for the

bride and the groom. Royal Decorations are used. The groom performs “the Pusar

Naga” Ceremony. And undergoes “membasuh

kaki” before entering the entrance.

Both couple seat on special dais.
