It is particularly used to describe the assimilation of immigrants to the United States; the melting-together metaphor was in use by the 1780s.

Slavery had a big impact on America. The economy of the South before the Civil war was built on slave labor. Many of the effects are still felt today. Some African Americans feel they should receive monetary compensation for their relatives being slaves. The fact that African Americans had to fight for their civil rights was a direct effect of slavery. Whites had come to believe that blacks were less intelligent and not capable of managing their own lives or make political decisions. The issue of race divides our nation today.
