Andrea Palladio was born in Padua in 1508 and his first designs date from the 1540s. For more than forty years, Palladio set down a standard for architecture that has survived the ages and inspired generations in every corner of the world. Although his work is limited to the Veneto, Palladio’s churches, palaces, and above all his signature villas represent the very ideal of classicism. In the US in particular, the importance ofPalladio’s civic architecture is exemplified by the veryseat of national power, the White House. The exhibit willalso focus on Palladio the scholar, author of fourvolumes on architecture published in Venice in 1570 anda standard reference for anyway interested inunderstanding his theories. He also published an editionof Vitruvius’s De architectura, complete with his ownextraordinary illustrations.To mark this auspicious occasion, the Institute willorganize a roundtable of architectural historians andmuseum curators from Chicago. The Institute will alsomake available to the public audiovisual materials thathelp deepen our understanding of Palladio’s work andinfluence.
