CultureThe  word  culture,  from  the  Latin  colo,  -­‐ere,  with  its  root  meaning  "to  cultivate“.

A   set   of   values,  norms,   institutions   and   artifacts  that   characterize   human   population   living   in   a  particular   time   and   place.   It   is   transmitted   by  symbols,  stories  and  rituals  over  generations.

A  common  way  of  understanding  culture  is  to  see  it  as  consisting  of  four  elements  that  are  passed  on  from  generation  to  generation  by  learning  alone:  

1. Values    2. Norms    3. Institutions    4. Artifacts

Material Culture –  the  physical  objects  produced  by  a  

culture  in  order  to  meet  its  material  needs:  food,  clothing,  shelter,  arts,  and  recreation.  

Important Terminology

Custom –  frequent  repetition  of  an  act  until  it  becomes  characteristic  of  a  

group  of  people.  

Taboo –  a  restriction  on  behavior  imposed  by  social  custom.
