Creating oneness or unity within a multi-religious and multi-cultural nation is challenging.

Some countries with plural societies have adopted the concept of full assimilation to forge or even force a single national identity.

Malaysia has chosen a different route - that of unity in diversity and inclusiveness, while ensuring fairness to all.

WHATIS THE

CULTURAL DIVERSITY

???!!!

Page 7: Cultural Diversity (1 Malaysia)

The phrase 'Cultural Diversity' means a range of different societies or peoples with different origins, religions and traditions all living and interacting together.

The food we eat, the music we listen to,

and the clothes we wear have all been influenced by different cultures and ethnics.

Even English is based on the languages

spoken by Anglo-Saxons, Scandinavian Vikings and Norman French invaders, with words added from the languages of other immigrants over the years!

MULTIRACIAL

SOCIETY?

Page 9: Cultural Diversity (1 Malaysia)

A multi-racial society is a society where we have people of different races, ethnics living together.

About 99% of the countries of the world are multi-racial.

It is usually very pleasant to live in such type of societies if people know how to live together, on the contrary this can become hellish as well.

ADVANTAGES

A multi-racial society is very rich in culture heritage, where you get the opportunity to learn about other cultures.

A multi-racial society is also a multi-linguist society so people living in such societies benefit from the richness of languages.

A wide variety of traditions, customs and festivals that are being carried out in such countries.

The fusion of cultures food becomes national, people are able to eat a wider variety of food, learning to prepare them in different ways, even celebrations of festivals become national.

A multi-racial society teaches people how to respect and understand the religion and cultures of others that leads to tolerance.

Multi nationality makes the country more dynamic because there are people who come from different places and this can help to develop new ideas about how to make our lives better.

DISADVANTAGES

In multi-racial societies very often there are misunderstandings, which lead to conflict.

These misunderstandings are due to people using different languages but fortunately for countries, which have a natural language, speak more commonly that language.

Fanaticism is another factor, which create conflicts in a multi-racial society.

These conflicts and division between people is further increased by politicians who practice ethnic politics, only to obtain votes.

People who vote according to ethnics, shows no true democratic values which eventually leads to bad government.

Fanaticism encourages people in becoming racist which then leads to intolerance and misunderstandings. Sometimes some religions fell that there are not being respected. Communalism is a soft form of racism.

RESPECT

Page 15: Cultural Diversity (1 Malaysia)

WHAT IS RESPECT? Respect consists of the acknowledgment

that the person you are interacting with is a person with feelings, thoughts, and most likely a life changing issue is at hand- maybe a death, maybe a divorce, maybe a birth...etc.

Respect offers eye to eye contact. Maybe a smile. Respecting someone is a way to show that you acknowledge them as a real person. Acknowledge their presence. Respond kindly if they talk to you.

IMPORTANCE OF RESPECT Respect is a very important part of life. If a person is

respected, it makes him fell good and in return, he or she respects you.

Respect is important because if a person didn’t respect anyone, he himself would not be admired, and over time, he would grow up to be a very rude and inconsiderate person.

Rudeness and kindness are also two very big components of respect. If you are rude to people or a person, you are disrespectful. If you are purposely mean or nasty to people, you are disrespectful.

Respecting teachers is a very important part of education and life. Teachers feel good when they are respected and tend to be less grumpy and nicer during the day.

CONCLUSION A multi-racial society teaches people

how to respect and understand the religion and cultures of others. Therefore this leads to tolerance. It helps us to learn to become a good human being.

To be good or bad does not depend on religion. Each of the great religion of the world speaks about love, peace and tolerance.
