WHAT IS CULTURAL COMPETENCY? Providing services in

a way that makes sense to the person/s you are providing it to.

Culture: Any group that shares beliefs, values, norms

Competent: Ability to do…

Congruent set of practice skills, knowledge, behaviors, attitudes & policies that come together in a system, agency or among providers and pros that enables that system to work effectively cross culturally- Cross et al, 1989

CULTURAL COMPETENCY It is the right

thing to do

Services aren't quality if they aren't culturally appropriate

It is also the law

CULTURAL COMPETENCY REGULATIONS Title VI of the Civil

Rights Act of 1964 “no person in the

United States shall on the ground of race, color or national origin be excluded from participation in, denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any program or activity receiving federal financial assistance” (42 U.S.C. 200d)

Also prohibits recipients of federal funds from providing services to LEP persons that limited in scope or lower in quality than those provided to others.
