What is Inquiry?

A teaching strategy that uses open-ended questions about a subject that fosters discussion

in which meaning is created.

Page 9: Cultivating Curiosity: Inquire! Create! Explore! Out-of-School Time (OST) 2013 Conference Look Closely: Investigating the Artwork of Artists of African.

Why Inquiry?

• Inquiry-based instruction requires participants to use creative and critical thinking to make meaning from works of art.

• Inquiry-based teaching strategies pose open-ended questions to challenge participants’ thinking about art and art-making, as opposed to teaching strategies based on lecturing or giving directions.

• Using inquiry allows for multiple perspectives on art and life.
