TIPS FOR A STRESS-FREE TAX SEASON

SPECIAL NEEDS PLANNING:

First StepsIf you’re like most parents who have a child with special needs, one of the most important questions you ask yourself is… ”What’s going to happen to my child when I’m no longer here?”To a large degree, the answer to that question will depend on the steps you begin taking today to arrange for your child’s future well-being.In planning for your child with special needs, there are certain initial steps you should take, such as:Access your child’s prognosis: Will your child ever be able to earn a living…manage assets…live independently? Your evaluation of issues such as these will then guide you in the type of planning you need to complete to provide for your child. If you’re unsure about your child’s future prognosis, be conservative in your assumptions. You can always change your plans in the future.Review your financial situation: What assets do you have available to provide for your child’s future financial needs? What can you do to accumulate additional assets for your child’s care?Living arrangements: Where do you want your child to live after your death, or if you become physically unable to care for your child? Will your child need a guardian (or conservator)?

Government benefits: Do you know what government benefits are available and what the requirements are to qualify for these benefits? Government benefits and their requirements can play a major role in your child’s future well-being. Be aware, however, that improper or careless planning could make your child ineligible for certain benefits. Government benefits fall into two groups:1. Entitlement Programs: Eligibility for entitlement programs is based on meeting certain requirements, such as age, disability or blindness. An individual who, for example, meets the required definition of disability is entitled to receive benefits, regardless of that individual’s financial situation.2. Needs-Based Programs: In order to receive benefits from a needs-based program, a disabled individual cannot have income or assets above stated amounts.

There are so many things to think about when planning for an individual with special needs. When you combine all of the day to day activities, planning can be overwhelming. NSWC Financial Services has an advisor who could help you navigate special needs planning. How NSWC FEDERAL CREDIT UNION protects you.PasswordsAccess to Internet Banking requires your member number and a unique password. This information along with any interactions and\or transactions performed is encrypted during transmission. You cannot use any part of your member number or Social Security Number as your password. NSWC FEDERAL CREDIT UNION strongly encourages you to define a unique password that only you can provide and is not tied to any personally identifiable information that a hacker could obtain from a phone book or the Internet. If you have recently updated your password, remember to update it with other institutions, such as Mint or Quicken. Members often use these institutions to keep track of their NSWC Federal Credit Union accounts. If they are not updated with the correct passwords, the login will fail and you will receive a security alert and be locked out of your online banking account.

Enhanced Login SecurityNSWC FEDERAL CREDIT UNION provides Enhanced Login Security which significantly increases your level of protection online. Not only will your password and user id be recognized, but your device will be recognized as well. If we don’t recognize your device – you’ve logged in from a public computer or one you haven’t used before - you will be prompted to provide a secure access code which will be sent to you. This step acts as an additional line of defense against unauthorized access to your accounts.

Timed log-offThe NSWC FEDERAL CREDIT UNION Internet Banking platform will log you off after 10 minutes of inactivity. This will reduce the risk of someone else accessing your financial information if you leave your PC unattended.

FirewallInternet Banking systems are protected 24 hours a day by a variety of security measures, to include firewalls that block unauthorized entry.

EncryptionThroughout your Internet Banking session, from login, to transaction activity, to log-off, all interactions are encrypted between your browser and the web server. NSWC FEDERAL CREDIT UNION employs some of the strongest levels of encryption available today. You can identify a secure (encrypted session) by looking for the “closed lock” icon in the lower right-hand corner (Microsoft Internet Explorer) or in the right end of the address bar (Firefox) or in the top right corner (Safari) of your browser. Additionally, the Web address or URL will begin with https://.... This indicates the page you are viewing uses encryption. The “s” stands for “secured.”

MORE SECURITY MEASURESWhile the measures noted above are instrumental to your safe interaction with Internet Banking, continuous monitoring is in place to alert NSWC FEDERAL CREDIT UNION of any unusual activity. If suspicious activity is identified, NSWC FEDERAL CREDIT UNION will take necessary steps to shut down access until the issue has been resolved. Security of your information is a top priority and we take it very seriously.

FOURSimple Steps TO Stay Secure

YOUAttackers have learned that the easiest way to bypass even the most advanced security technology is by attacking you. If they want your password, credit card, or personal data, the easiest thing for them to do is trick you into giving them this information. For example, they can call you pretending to be Microsoft tech support and claim that your computer is infected, when in reality they are just cyber criminals that want you to give them access to your computer. Or perhaps they will send you an email explaining that your package could not be delivered and ask you to click on a link to confirm your mailing address. In reality, they are tricking you into visiting a malicious website that will hack into your computer. This is how attacks such as Ransomware or CEO Fraud start. Ultimately, the greatest defense against attackers is you. Be suspicious.  By using common sense, you can spot and stop most attacks.

UPDATINGMake sure your computers, mobile devices, apps, and anything else connected to the Internet are running the latest software versions. Cyber criminals are constantly looking for new vulnerabilities in the software your devices use. When they discover vulnerabilities, they use special programs to exploit them and hack into your devices. Meanwhile, the companies that created the software are hard at work fixing them by releasing updates. By ensuring your computers and mobile devices install these updates, you make it much harder for someone to hack you. To stay current, simply enable automatic updating whenever possible. This rule applies to almost any technology connected to a network, including Internet-connected TV’s, baby monitors, home routers, gaming consoles, or perhaps even your car. If your operating systems or devices are old and no longer supported with security updates, we recommend you replace them with new ones that are.

BACKUPSSometimes, no matter how careful you are, you may be hacked. If that is the case, often your only option to ensure your computer or mobile device is free of malware is to fully wipe it and rebuild it from scratch. The attacker might even prevent you from accessing your personal files, photos, and other information stored on the hacked system. Often the only way to restore all of your personal information is from backup. Make sure you are doing regular backups of any important information and verify that you can restore from them. Most operating systems and mobile devices support automatic backups. In addition, you should store your backups in either the Cloud or offline to protect them against cyber attackers.

PASSWORDSThe next step to protecting yourself involves using a strong, unique password for each of your devices and online accounts. The key words here are strong and unique. A strong password means one that cannot be easily guessed by hackers or by their automated programs. Tired of complex passwords that are hard to remember and difficult to type? Try using a passphrase instead. Rather than a single word, use a series of words that are easy to remember, such as “Where is my coffee?” The longer your passphrase, the stronger it is. A unique password means using a different password for each device and online account. This way, if one password is compromised, all of your other accounts and devices are still safe. Can’t remember all those strong, unique passwords? Don’t worry, neither can we. This is why we recommend you use a password manager, which is a specialized application for your smartphone or computer that securely stores all of your passwords in an encrypted format.

Another important step you can take to protect your account is to use Touch ID, which uses your biometrics or a Passcode you have set up on your smartphone. Enable this option on every account you can, including your password manager, if possible.

The Equifax breach of 2017 exposed the personal information of about 143 million U.S. consumers. Information leaked included names, social security numbers, birth dates, and other personal data. A breach this large has the potential to include many NSWC members, and we want you to know that we’re here to help in any way we can. Below are some steps you can take to determine whether your information was impacted by the breach and how you can start protecting your credit and identity today.

1. Visit www.equifaxsecurity2017.com to keep up on the latest breach-related news and instructions from Equifax and to determine if your personal information may be at risk.

2. Consider contacting the three credit reporting companies – Equifax, Experian and TransUnion – to apply a credit freeze.

3. Be vigilant in reviewing your account statements and credit reports, and immediately report any unauthorized activity to your financial institution.

• National Cat Day was October 29th

NSWC FCU had a Facebook competition for the cutest cat picture. The cat with the most likes received a $100 gift card to PetSmart. We also donated $1.00 to the Fredericksburg SPCA and KG Animal Rescue League for every like we received up to $2,500. We had a total of 6,617 likes, which means both the Fredericksburg SPCA and KG Animal Rescue League received $2,500!

• Thanksgiving Food Drive

Thanks to our members’ and employees’ donations, almost 700 pounds of food and $300 in gift cards were donated to over 40 local military families in need. Thanksgiving meal baskets were arranged to provide these families with everything they needed for an abundant Thanksgiving meal – turkeys, roasting pans,

vegetables, fruit, potatoes, gravy, stuffing, desserts, breads, baking supplies, drinks, and more! Because donations were so generous, we were also able to donate four full boxes of non-perishable food to the base food bank. We are so proud of our Credit Union family!
