KIM ELDERSHEAD COACHAs Head Coach Kim Elders enters his 21st season at the helm of the Cornerstone University Mens basketball program, he finds himself one victory short of 500. Elders’ record currently stands

at 499-202 heading into the 2013-14 campaign. Elders finds himself in illustrious company where he ranks seventh for most victories among active NAIA D-2 coaches. His .712 winning percentage is also the fourth highest among the same elite group of coaches. Since taking over the program in 1993, Elders’ teams have averaged 25 victories per season. Five of his teams have recorded 30+ victories, including his 1999 National Championship team (37-3) and his 2011 National Championship team (34-4). Elders has also guided his teams to three Final 4’s (’01, ’02 & ’03) and three Elite 8’s (’05, ’07 & ’10). His 26 national tournament victories ranks third all-time in the NAIA D2. Elders has been one of the most successful coaches in the history of the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference. Since the inception of the WHAC in 1992-93, Elders’ teams have captured six regular season titles (’96, ’99, ’05, ’07, ’10 , ’11). His ’99 squad is still the only team to finish the conference with an undefeated record. The Golden Eagles went a perfect 14-0 during that campaign. From 1999-2011, Elders led CU to an unprecedented 13 consecutive WHAC Conference Tournament title games. Elders has also been one of the most successful coaches in WHAC post-season play. He has guided his teams to seven conference tournament championships (’99, ’01, ’02, ’04, ’06, ’10, ’11). Cornerstone is the only team in the WHAC’s 21-year history to capture both the regular season and conference tournament in back-to-back seasons (’10, ’11). Elders has garnered several individual coaches awards during his spectacular career. He has been named WHAC Coach of the Year on five different occasions (’96, ’99,’05, ’10, ’11). Twice he has been named NAIA National Coach of the Year. The first one came in ’99 following CU’s first National Championship. His second award came after the ’11 National Championship. In ’99, Elders was also named the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) National Coach of the Year. He also earned Basketball Coaches Association of Michigan (BCAM) Coach of the Year honors that same season. In 1996, when Cornerstone was still a member of the National Christian College Athletic Association, Elders was selected as the NCCAA National Coach of the Year. In three different seasons (’99, ’02, ’05), Elders teams were ranked No. 1 in the National Polls for several weeks. Elders has also guided his teams to 30+ victories on five different occasions.During Elders’ 20 seasons of leading the program, he has coached 24 WHAC All-Academic players, 43 WHAC All-Conference players and 22 NAIA All-Americans. Twelve of Elders’ players have earned NAIA Scholar-Athlete honors. On six different occasions, Elders has taken his teams on overseas missions trips. The first one was to the Philippines in 1998. Two years later, Elders led his team to Singapore. In the summers of 2003 and 2005, his teams went back to the Philippines. On the last two trips (’10, ‘13), the Golden Eagles were involved in church construction in the Dominican Republic. “I’ve had many great memories during my career at CU,” says Elders. “But my fondest memories have been leading my players to different parts of the world on mission trips. God has allowed us to use our gifts and abilities to serve others and minister the gospel in these less fortunate countries. These trips are always life-changing for us.” Elders began his coaching career in 1981 at Grand Rapids Baptist Academy, leading the boys’ JV team to a 70-29 record in five years. From 1986-1989, Elders was at Freedom Baptist Academy in Hudsonville, MI. There he served as the school’s first athletic director and also coached the boys’ varsity basketball team. Arriving at Cornerstone in 1990, Elders responsibilities included assistant men’s basketball coach and head baseball coach. From 1993-95, Elders served as interim athletic director for Cornerstone. He was named NAIA District 23 Athletic Director of the Year in 1993-94. Elders is a 1977 graduate of Grand Valley State University where he earned a degree in physical education. He received his master’s degree in athletic administration in 1993 from Western Michigan University. In addition to his coaching position at CU, Elders also serves as associate athletic director and teaches classes in the kinesiology department. Elders resides with his wife, Holly, in East Grand Rapids. He has four children: Nic, 26, Zac , 24, Cam, 21 and Missy, 18.

PRE-SEASON OUTLOOK 2013–2014

Wes Hudson, Jake Plite and Anthony Allen were on top of the world three years ago when they were freshmen playing on Cornerstone’s 2011 National Championship team. Now seniors, the three teammates and close friends have endured two seasons of mediocrity, going 19-13 and 21-11, consecutively.

Eager to get back to Branson, MO, site of the 2014 NAIA D-2 National Championship, Hudson, Plite and Allen, along with fellow senior Alex Lyle are determined to leave CU on a good note.

“You win with seniors – plain and simple,” says Head Coach Kim Elders now in his 21st season at the Golden Eagle helm. “Seniors play with an entirely different mindset. They’re more focused and play with an urgency unlike their first three years. Seniors realize that this ‘is it’ and that their careers will be over in just a few short months.

“We have four outstanding seniors who have worked hard over the summer and have been looking forward to their final season with great anticipation,” Elders goes on. “All of our great teams in the past have been senior-laden. This group is no different.”

Hudson (Wayland, MI), a two-time NAIA All-American, is the key to the Golden Eagles success this season. The 6-0 combo guard led the team in scoring a year ago with nearly 18 PPG. Hudson also led CU in FT% (90%), assists (137) and 3-point field goals (68). His 90% accuracy from the line was #1 in NAIA D-2.

“Wes is a special player who already has left his mark on our program,” says Elders. “He does it all. As good as he is on offense, he’s equally as good on defense. We’re looking forward to Wes having another All-American year for us.”

Entering the season, Hudson, a two-time WHAC 1st Team performer, has 310 career assists and 150 career steals.

Plite (Sparta, MI), is as eager as anyone on the team to get the season under way. The 6-7 forward was having his best year ever until he went down on Jan. 23 with a season-ending knee injury. Plite, who missed the final 11 games, was the Golden Eagles top rebounder (6.4/game) during the 2012-13 campaign. He also had the highest field goal percentage (.547) on the team and was third in scoring with 11.8 points/game.

“Jake was having an outstanding season. Losing him to an ACL injury was devastating,” remarks Elders. “With the season that Jake was having, he was probably the one player we could least afford to lose. It took us three weeks to finally adjust and play without Jake. We actually missed him more on the defense end of the court than we did on offense.”

Plite was the anchor to CU’s interior defense. Despite missing a third of the season, he had the second most defensive rebounds (97) on the team.

Allen (Hudsonville, MI), has been a solid player off the bench for the Golden Eagles over the last two seasons. During that time, he has dished out 95 assists with just 31 turnovers (3/1 ratio). Allen’s A/TO ratio was the 11th highest in the NAIA for the 2012-13 season. The 5-7 point guard had a season-high 8 assists versus UM-Dearborn on Feb. 2.

“Anthony has always been a pass first - score second player. He knows his role on our team and performs it exceptionally well.

He facilitates our offense and is an outstanding defender,” says Elders. “Every team needs an Anthony Allen.”

Allen finished the ‘12-‘13 season with 23 steals.

Alex Lyle (Wayland, MI), who transferred in a year ago, also provided the Golden Eagles with solid minutes off the bench. The 6-2 swing player averaged 7 point/game in 15 minutes of action. His 29 3-pointers were fourth on the team. Lyle had a season-high 19 points versus UM-Dearborn on Feb. 2.

“Alex had a good year for us,” comments Elders. “Once he got himself acclimated with our system and felt more comfortable, he played some really good basketball for us. Alex is a scorer. He gave our team a needed spark off the bench in several games last season. Alex has gotten so much better at his decision-making as to when to take the ball to the hole and when to shoot the 3.”

Lyle averaged 11 points/game while shooting 50% from the field during the last seven games of the season.

Headlining this year’s junior class is Ty Mason (Comstock Park, MI).

Mason was just one of two players (Hudson) to start in all 32 contests in ‘12-‘13. The 6-2 wing was second on the team in scoring with 11.1 points/game. Mason’s 30 treys and 84% shooting from the line were both third on the team.

“Ty was a 100% better player last season than when he was a freshman. As a freshman he was always in a hurry and made a lot of bad decisions. Last season he slowed down and saw the game so much better. His defense was much improved as well,” Elders says. “This year we expect Ty to give us more consistency in his shooting numbers from the field. We’ve also challenged Ty to give us more rebounding and assists.”

Mason played most of the season with an injured foot. Off-season surgery should help him have the best season of his career.

The second and only other junior on this year’s roster is Justin Pepper (Wayland, MI).

Pepper became one of CU’s biggest contributors during the last half of the season a year ago. The 6-7 post player started the last 11 games. His 38 blocks led the team and ranked third in the WHAC. Pepper also led the team with 116 defensive rebounds. Over the final five games of the season, Pepper averaged 7 points/game and 7 rebounds/game while shooting 50% from the field.

“Justin really came into his own and established himself as one of the best post players in the WHAC, especially on the defensive end of the floor,” Elders comments. “He’s a tremendous one on one defender in the post and really makes his presence known with his shot blocking ability. He finished the season so well. We are expecting Justin to have an outstanding junior season.”

Off-season shoulder surgery has sidelined Pepper for a few months, but the Golden Eagles are hopeful that he will be able to pick up where he left off in February.

This year’s sophomore class will be led by Ben Lanning (Grandville, MI), a transfer from Grand Valley State University. Lanning, a local player who also starred at Grandville High

Page 10: CU 2013-2014 Men's Basketball Media Guide

CORNERSTONE UNIVERSITY | 8 | MEN’S BASKETBALL 2013-2104

School, is long, versatile and athletic. At 6-8, Lanning will give the Golden Eagles both inside and outside scoring, along with needed rebounding and shot blocking.

“Ben will be a very nice addition to our program,” said Elders. “Because he transferred in last January, he was able to practice with the team and get familiar with our players and system during the entire second semester. With his ability to step out and shoot the 3-pointer, Ben will allow us to spread the floor and stretch the defense.”

Lanning was named to the OK Red All-Conference 1st Team as a senior at Grandville High School. He averaged 3 PPG and 2RPG as a freshman at GVSU while shooting 41% from behind the arc.

Returning for their sophomore campaigns are Luke Morrison (Elk Rapids, MI) and Travis Wells (Eaton Rapids, MI). Morrison, a 6-3 forward appeared in nine varsity games a year ago. Primarily a JV player, Morrison averaged 17 PPG on the Golden Eagles’ JV team last season.

Wells, a 6-2 shooting guard, played in seven varsity games during the 2011-12 season. He was red-shirted for the 12-13 campaign. A 1st Team Capitol Activities All-Conference performer at ERHS, Wells has three years of eligibility remaining.

“We’re excited about our sophomore class. Ben will make an immediate impact for our team and both Luke and Travis provide tremendous depth at the 2-3 spots,” said Elders.

This year’s incoming freshmen class is loaded with talent. The Golden Eagles landed three of the top four players from the Grand Rapids area along with one of the best players from the greater Flint area.

Headlining this year’s newcomers is Joey Blauwkamp (Grandville, MI). Blauwkamp’s prep resume’ is impressive to say the least. The 6-0 wing led his team to the 2011 Class D State Championship as a sophomore. As a senior, he brought his team back to the Breslin where they finished as state runner-ups. Blauwkamp was named the Associated Press Class D Player of the Year. He was also named to the Grand Rapids Press Dream Team for the second consecutive year, earning Player of the Year this past season. Blauwkamp scored 1,006 career points at Tri-unity. A three-time All-Conference performer, Blauwkamp also grabbed 597 rebounds and dished out 235 assists for his career. He holds school records for steals in a season (96) and steals for a career (267).

“Joey is a complete player,” said Elders. “He does everything. The best to describe him is ‘a playmaker.’ He’s always making plays on the court. He’s a very good offensive player, but his strength is definitely on the defensive end of the court.”

Blauwkamp averaged 14 PPG and 10 RPG while shooting 57% from the floor as a senior.

Michael McLaughlin (Grand Rapids, MI), was arguably the best point guard in the Grand Rapids area last year. The 5-9 playmaker averaged 14 PPG and 7 RPG during his senior season. McLaughlin also dished out a team-high 6 APG and was second in the area behind Blauwkamp with 72 steals.

“Michael is a lot like Joey in terms of making positive things

happen on the court. He’s a true point guard who does a tremendous job of facilitating the offense. Michael has a pass first, score second mentality. He is very good at breaking down the defense and creating scoring opportunities for his teammates. Defensively, Michael is an outstanding on-the-ball defender and plays the passing lanes exceptionally well,” said Elders.

McLaughlin, a three-time All-Conference performer, was named to the Grand Rapids Press All-Area 2nd Team in 2013.

The lone freshman that’s not from Grand Rapids is Cory Cox (Flushing, MI). A 6-5 small forward, Cox had an outstanding senior campaign for Fenton High School. He led his team to a 21-2 record while averaging 19 PPG. An outstanding shooter behind the arc, Cox was second in Class A with 39 treys in’13.

“Cory is a versatile player,” says Elders. “With his size, he can score inside but also float out to the perimeter and knock down 3-pointers. He has a very high basketball IQ. We will look to use Cory at the 4 some this year because of ability to bring his defender away from the basket and stretch the defense out.”

Cox was a 1st Team Flint All-Metro and Flint All-Area performer the last two years.

Rounding out the ’13-’14 roster for the Golden Eagles is post player Ty Smith (Zeeland, MI).

Smith, at 6-4, might be slightly undersized to play post at the college level. But the CU coaching staff believes that he possesses all the entangibles to make up for his lack of height. Smith helped his team to an 18-4 record and an OK Black Conference title (9-1) this past season. He averaged 10 RPG and 8 RPG while shooting an outstanding 64% from the floor.

“Ty is relentless. He never stops. He’s a tremendous competitor who just outworks everyone on the court,” said Elders. “Ty is the kind of player coaches love because he hates to lose, never quits and plays with so much passion, physicality and toughness.

Smith, one of the top rebounders in the area in ’12-’13, finished his career with 490 rebounds.

The Golden Eagles enter the ’13-’14 season with great senior leadership, a load of talent, depth and focus – all traits that were lacking a year ago.

“Not making it to Branson last year might be a blessing in disguise,” said Elders. “It has caused our players to be hungry. Last year we didn’t value every game, every defensive and offensive possession. We had no one to blame but ourselves for coming up short. I think that we learned some valuable lessons that we can bring into this season to help us achieve our goals and be the best team possible.”

AN INVESTMENT IN BUILDING CHARACTER

It is an exciting time to be a part of Cornerstone University. Our student-athletes are now recognized on the national level not only for their excellence and success in competition, but also for their commitment to being Champions of Character. CU has been designated a Champions of Character institution by the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) and is taking a leadership role in modeling the program to other Institutions.

AN OPPORTUNITY TO SUPPORT LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT

We are also committed to the development of a student’s Christian worldview and leadership skills, which affirm the NAIA’s desire to promote integrity, fair play, good sportsmanship and excellence through athletics.

A COMMITMENT TO EXCELLENCE

At CU, our athletic programs exist as an integral part of both academic and spiritual life and are specifically designed to serve the mission of the university. Our coaches and student-athletes are committed to excellence, and it is their goal to honor God by using their abilities in sport competition.

Our desire is to offer quality, competitive, athletic experiences to our players, opposing team members and fans that provide both enjoyment and an opportunity for student-athletes to mature not just as athletes but also as outstanding human beings.

AN OPPORTUNITY TO GET INVOLVED

The Golden Eagle Club plays a vital role in providing the means to continue our push toward excellence. Not only does our Golden Eagle Club membership contribute financially to our sports programs, but more importantly, our membership provides the opportunity to become mentors to our student-athletes and provide much needed support to them along their journey as college students.

FUN!

If you are looking for fun activities that can be enjoyed by the whole family, then the Golden Eagle Club is for you. Come sit in the Golden Eagle Club VIP section, cheer on our Golden Eagles and enjoy our complimentary buffet table during each halftime of the basketball games. You will also receive invitations to exclusive events and special activities as well as receive a discount on all merchandise.

If you are looking for a way to impact young people and have a lot of fun in the process, then the Golden Eagle Club is for you.

INTELLECTUAL COMMUNITY. CHRISTIAN WORLDVIEW.

At our core, we are compelled and inspired by Jesus Christ. Of all the relationships you’ll walk away with from Cornerstone, your relationship with Him rises above the rest.

Academic excellence, accessible resources and a culturally rich community are building blocks to help you attain a rewarding education, fulfilling career and a meaningful life. Our students rise to the high standards put before them with the help of a supportive community surrounding them.

We invite you to visit our campus and experience a day at Cornerstone. We offer individual and group visits throughout the year where you can hear great chapel speakers, visit classes, meet professors, tour the residence halls, attend an athletic event, explore opportunities for overseas trips and ask as many questions as you want.
