The 2013-2014 school

year is about to come to an

official close, and I continue to

marvel at all the changes in

Texas concerning our chil-

dren’s education. There is a

huge push to graduate students

who are not only ready for

higher education, but also ca-

reer –ready with 21st century

skills that will allow them to

adapt to jobs that will exist in a

few years, but do not exist at

the moment.

These changes have

brought CTE to the forefront

providing relevance to their

education. Understanding that

their reading, writing and math

skills are directly related to the

skills they will need for higher

education and the workforce is

what Career & Technical Edu-

cation is all about. CTE stu-

dents and staff continue rais-

ing the bar. A couple of years

ago, having every student

graduate with a nationally

recognized certification was a

dream. Now, it is a reality

with many CTE students earn-

ing two or more certifications.

LISD CTE students

are earning recognitions in all

different areas, and teachers

are constantly looking for

ways to give their students real

-life work experiences by

working with our many part-

ners in the community. CTE

teachers support the academic

areas by requiring reading,

daily writing,

emphasizing

academic vocab-

ulary, giving

students real life

experience to

practice their

literacy skills all

in a hands-on and

highly interactive

environment.

What you will see in the

next few pages reflects a sample of

only a portion of the wonderful

things that are happening in CTE at

LISD. We can’t wait to share with

you what’s coming next year!

Career and technical programs are dedicated to preparing young people to manage the dual roles of family member and wage earner. Starting in middle school, our program ex-

poses students to different career options and prepares them with life skills as well as soft

skills needed to obtain and maintain gainful employment in their future.

Community leaders and influential members routinely meet with our students to motivate

and inspire them.

Career and technical programs enable students to gain entry-level employment in a high-skill, high-wage job and/or to continue their education.

WE BELIEVE…

That every single LISD student should have the opportunity

to get a jump start towards their careers.

Our CTE students at LISD, have the opportunity to start getting college credit while still in high school.

We offer both articulated courses and dual enrollment courses.

Local articulated courses are courses where the student will receive credit at LCC for taking a high school course depend-ing on their major. Students use course articulations to assure that the courses they complete in high school will not have to be repeated at LCC. There are also state articulated courses which are the same as local articulations for state universities. The courses are articulated only if the teacher has received ATC accreditation for the course.

Dual Enrollment courses are courses where the student will attend LCC or TAMIU while still in high school. The course tak-en at LCC will also count towards the high school graduation credit requirements.

The Students-as-Techs was created by the Director of Information Technology, Miguel Munoa. In

this program, students are enrolled in the CTE course Independent Study in Evolving and Emerging

Technologies. These students shadow and assist the campus technicians with any technical issue

arising at their campus. Concurrently, these students are undergoing training through a collabora-

tion between their teacher and the campus technician to prepare them for the Internet Core Compu-

ting Certification (IC3). The IC3 certification is comprised of three different exams that must be

passed in order to be IC3 certified. They are Computing Fundamentals, Key Applications and Living

Online. Upon certification the students are highly qualified and ready to be employed by places

such as Best Buy or any Tech Support Entity.

There are 95 students currently enrolled in the program : 35 Nixon High School 41 Martin High School

Exploring Careers includes a module

that allows students to explore the vari-

ous components of our earth that make

it unique. Students learn about: convec-

vergent, convergent, and transform

boundaries, reverse faults, seismogram,

topographic maps, and the five basic

layers of the earth. Students also learn

about Earth as it relates to the universe.

Using dimensional analysis, students

draw a scale model of the earth. In the
