What we learned from the projects on

technology transfer

Very few of the identified technologies are patented in

the target countries (Less than one per cent of all patent applications

relating to Clean Energy Technology (CET) have been filed in Africa)

This results in a situation where the technology may not

require a license from the provider in order for the seeker

to use the technology in their target countries. But, the

provider may possess know how that is critical to the

technology, and is likely to be unwilling to disclose the

know how to the seeker without a formal license. Thus,

licensing issues are still relevant

Page 22: CTC-N Regional Forum for Anglophone Africa WIPO GREEN · 2020-06-09 · CTC-N Regional Forum for Anglophone Africa WIPO GREEN Nairobi,28.9.2016 Yesim Baykal Senior Program Officer,

What we learned from the projects on

technology transfer

Increased training and capacity building is certainly

required – from the point of creating initial awareness, to

disseminating easily accessible resources to ensure all

parties to a technology transfer (licensing) negotiation

are well informed and capable of structuring a fair deal.

Role of patents for green technologies, especially for

renewable technologies differ from other sectors.

There are always alternatives and competition in green

technology sector. There is sufficient room in the market

for competing technologies. This reduces the influence

of specific patents on tech. progress and pricing

Raise profile of WIPO GREEN amongst Green-Tech

community
