After thirty-four years in the classroom, the Coastal Savannah Writing Project has provided inspiration, guidance, collegiality, and a new found interest in research. This Summer Institute has been by far the most useful time I have devoted to writing [and the teaching of writing]. Deborah, CSWP Fellow This has been much more than a ‘professional development‘ opportunity – this experience has awakened a hibernating passion that will continue to be weeded and nourished. Angella, CSWP Fellow I found the strategies to help me find my voice in writing were phenomenal. I cannot teach what I have not experienced myself. The focus on the teacher as a writer will in turn energize the students and promote a life-long love for reading and writing. The 2012 CSWP Summer Writing Institute (RDEN 7185) is a 3-credit, 2-week course for K-12 teachers and administrators in all content areas. The Institute provides a place and time for teachers to demonstrate and learn diverse effective classroom practices, teach and learn writing processes, examine writing theory and research, become comfortable writing in divergent modes and genres, and share their writings with colleagues. The 2012 CSWP Summer Reading Institute (RDEN 8072) is a 3-credit, 2-week course for K-12 teachers and administrators in all content areas. RDEN 8072 is one of the 3 courses of the AASU Reading Endorsement program, but it can be taken independently. The institute will provide a place and time for teachers to both share and learn diverse effective classroom practices, teach and learn reading strategies, examine reading theory and research, and become comfortable in teaching reading strategies for divergent genres and content areas as well as language arts. The Summer Institutes will bring together local teachers in all grade levels and all disciplines for reading, writing, research, discussion, and also collaboration. Participants meet each day to discuss reading-writing strategies, read about effective ways to teach writing and reading, use writing as a learning tool, research current topics in writing and reading, and improve their teaching practices. As a result of these activities, teachers will be better prepared for their own classrooms and for working with all students and other teachers to become literacy leaders in their schools.
