Why are Costumes & props necessary?

Props and costumes are an important part of any shooting whether it’s a movie, a fashion shoot, a documentary, a TV commercial, or a still photography shoot like my magazine shots. Costumes need to be chosen very carefully by costume designers to depict the mood of the scene, lifestyle, time period of the movie/shoot, age of the actors/models and also their personality, this may show viewers a characters background such as wealth or working class.

Selecting the right costume for a movie or photo shoot is not an easy task, Thorough research has to be done keeping the script of the movie or genre on the shoot in mind.

Costumes and props for photography shoot

• For a magazine shoot it is important that the costume and props meet the genre/style of the magazine and the artist/model.

• This will create a sense of realism and professionalism of my product and will attract my target audience

Real life costume and props from current magazines

This real life XXL magazine shows more props then costumes, the artist is topless with an overflow of chains and watches on his body. His tattoos are also on show which may have some meaning to his fans. This represents wealth and individuality as he’s shoot is different from other artists.

This XXL magazine front cover shows an artist wearing a casual outfit (jeans, shirt and jacket) but still meeting the genre on the magazine by using props such as chains around his neck. His position and body language almost represents him showing his wealth by lifting his jacket.

This particular magazine shows the artist ‘Drake’ but has a casual image looking to his left . This may be because drakes personality is different from other artists as no props such as chains are used but a simple jacket and coat has been used for costumes.
